Hello,
I have decided to go with the flow and take last Karaya kit from my stash. For the long time I wanted to do some plane with hexagonal KuK’s camouflage and bought Karaya Aviatik Berg D.II with such a intention but the technique of laying them on the scale replica always gave me the headache. More I tried to read and get the knowledge of the pattern and colors more reluctant I became. Then I said stop, Let us do it! So here comes new story
First the engine. Karaya’s Austro-Daimler is quite good but some improvements were necessary. Those resin springs imitations were not the good idea, so decided to do them on my own.

Great job Krzysiek! Your production rate lately is trully stunning ;)
Everything apart the prop looks great! The latter isn`t your best one I think.
Keep up the good work!

Thanks for being here!
Now the most interesting part: hexagons and the methodology of applying.
To sum up that topic is rather unsolved and unveiled, so I will focus on simplifying the apply as long as possible in terms of pattern and color used.
First approach: decals. Only one, which I know are produced by PrintScale and looks rather pale, but who knows how did they look like After first trial it seems they are useless and react just like Roden’s ones. See the picture. So: mission was not accomplished
(http://rebe83.waw.pl/pub/krzysiek/warsztat/AviatikBergDII/ABDII_25.JPG)
Second approach: masks. Not available on the market so I had to order. Waiting for delivery I have prepared 2 base colors, on which the hexagons will be applied

i have enjoyed your build so far. below i have a link to louis's berg build. i followed this build as it happened. he did extensive study on the colors and mixed paint and used frisket film masks. it is an aviatik d.1 though. i dont remember seeing any aviatik d.11 with hex camo, which plane will you model?

Hello,
Thanks for the links I have been looking into that build already.
I am going to do 39.08 and you can see fuselage hex on wings palette: http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww1/f/176/175/4#34
I assume the draft was based on Japo.
BTW. I have altered 'light grey" base as added to much blue color. Now it is the mixture of white, little black and just small drop of azul blue. Pics soon

Excellent progress. I am looking forward to seeing you use the masks!

Hello,
Finally masks were received so started to implement first hexagons. Used Vallejo French Blue with just little bit of red

Hello,
..still doing that tedious work.
In comparison with Japo I can see now that my lighter hex should rather go just behind the pilot’s seat. I am half hex ahead of that line..well seems to be some kind of mistake with criteria taken, but I am not going to finish PhD in hex camo:), so keep on doing my work.

You are doing a brilliant job with the hexagon painting and like what Gregory said, she is going to one very colourful bird.

That's because the Karaya kit has the cockpit 3-4 mm too far back, compared to all available drawings.

Yes, that must be the reason.
There are slight spaces between hex colours due to improper mask implementation, but those are easy to fix

Still do not have slightest idea how to finish the top of the fuselage...but for sure I must keep symmetry at least

Hi,
I just started harder part of painting- upper wings as here comes 4 colours for lighter scheme of camouflage. I have used K.u.K Luftfahrtruppe Tarnstoff 1917-1918 by Dr. Glen K. Merrill as the main source for the pattern. Unfortunately I have not prepared first base colour in right tone so had significant problems with achieving the acceptable level of work done.

Hi,
Thanks but the picture above depicts fixing of unwanted colour spaces between hexs. For the first approach I use pattern consisting of 6x6 hexs, later once needed I use 1 hex pattern for corrections.
Uhhh…work is almost done

Very nicely done. Which masks did you use for the lozenge/hexagons?
-
Splendid job Krzysiek! IT looks extremely good and I think it wasn't the easiest one to paint. Seems like one of the most aesthetically pleasing camouflages ever. those K.u.k. guys had a sense for such things; take Brumowski's camo as an example - looks like pyjamas; ))) that's one of the reasons why the k.u.k.aircrafts are so interesting for the modelling purposes.
-
incredible work! Awesome!
I never cared about k. u. k. airplanes. But seeing your progress I definitely have to rethink that...
Best wishes
