She's a real beauty. I've been waiting for the WnW version but as I see there are only a few of Roden's decals to worry about, I may well build one of these kits myself.

Cheers,

Chris

This is my all time favorite Triplane model, Des.  I love the prototype and plan on building one in 1/48 soon.  This particular plane had quite a history and a successful relationship with R. S. Dallas.

Such a beautiful Tripe, Dave.  As I said before, it's hard to believe this is 1/72 scale, let alone the Revell kit.  Brilliant work.

Great looking Tripe hounds guys:

@ Des:  Your Roden kit is really a beaut!  I like the linen look you did, really a striking scheme.

@ Dave:  Your old Revell Kit really turned out nice.  Outstanding work.

@ Gregory:  I wouldn't feel to sheepish about posting your Koster Kit.  You did an amazing job on it and it still looks great.

Thanks all for sharing.

Okay, here is my Aurora/K&B Sopwith Triplane.  I built this about 6 years ago when I got back into WWI aircraft.  It is a very basic kit so I put a pilot figure in it.

(http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/ptbarnum101/Marks%20WWI%20Subjects/SopwithTRIPE-2.jpg) (http://s942.photobucket.com/user/ptbarnum101/media/Marks%20WWI%20Subjects/SopwithTRIPE-2.jpg.html)

(http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/ptbarnum101/Marks%20WWI%20Subjects/SopwithTRIPE-1.jpg) (http://s942.photobucket.com/user/ptbarnum101/media/Marks%20WWI%20Subjects/SopwithTRIPE-1.jpg.html)

(http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/ptbarnum101/Marks%20WWI%20Subjects/SOPWITHTRIPE-3.jpg) (http://s942.photobucket.com/user/ptbarnum101/media/Marks%20WWI%20Subjects/SOPWITHTRIPE-3.jpg.html)

The markings are the kit supplied so are lacking the "C" and some of the other distinctive markings.  I enjoyed the build.  The fit was amazing!

Enjoy

Mark

Well here's mine.

Not quite finished yet, and just a slightly larger scale at 1/3 ;D

I hope it will be flying this year as part of the UK Dawn Patrol group, looking forward to flying at Stow Maries, Old Warden and elsewhere as part of this year's commemorations to mark the start of WW1.

As you can see, it (and I!) had the pleasure of the company of its full size cousin in September last year during the Shuttleworth Uncovered display.

Although it started off life as a semi-kit it is now essentially completely scratch built (the exceptions being the ribs, the inter-plane struts and and the fire wall).   It will have a 62cc s stroke engine driving a ~28" propeller via a reduction gear.   Its construction and rigging follows the full-size practice and it will be finished as Bob Little's Blymp so it has at least something in common with Dave's smaller version!

For those that are interested, the full build can be seen on this UK R/C forum http://www.rcmf.co.uk/4um/index.php/topic,48364.440.html (apologies Des if links to other forums are frowned on!)

Ultimately it will have my "PupCam" HD video system installed for a "Little's eye" view of the world.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25SgsoLeZPw&list=UUPOAdalPo30V14FGPN4oAaA

Not a typical model for this site I know, but I think it's sometimes interesting to see what other modelling disciplines get up to.  It's many years since I've actually built a plastic model but it doesn't stop me being astounded by the beautiful builds on here!

Thanks for sharing this beautiful Build with us. I'd really welcome more photos once the fabric is on and She's finished. I am really impressed with the Dawn Patrol Group's large scale aircraft, would love to see them fly one day. Good luck with her and remember to "put the power up in the turns"! ;)

Des, Dave, Gregory, Mark and Alan,

Many congratulations with the build of your splendid tripes in all kind of scales. They show your skills so very well.
I hesitated a long time before posting my attempt of building the tripe because I think it would be a sort of anticlimax after all these lovely builds. I didn't even show it in completed models for that reason. But here it is:

Patrick,
I'll try this again, couldn't get through the Site problems this morning. What's not to like with your Tripe!? I think it's a great model, and more so as an early Build in your experience. These "stringbags" aren't easy to model and you've done a fine job. As I look back at my efforts, particularly since returning to the Hobby, I tend to focus on my first few in 1:32 and note that with each build they improve, that's the joy of it. So what's next on your bench? I can't forecast that but I'll bet it turns out better then you think, and so on as you keep building these little devils.
Remember above all else to enjoy what you are doing, and don't be too harsh a critic of your work. ;)
Cheers,
Lance

Hello

Rick: this is indeed a fantastic build and your build log served me so much in doing my tripe. Thank you again!

Des, Ernie, Rick, Nigel, Bud and Lance : Thank you for your much to kind words. My problem is that I manage to assemble and paint the plane rather well, but then I start to ruine it by inserting the eyelets, the glue is all over the place, and my eyes can't nearly see the holes I drilled in the wings. That's my frustration although not really an excuse. Besides I'm not very good in obtaining the right colors, I know hardly anything about engines and planes. I'm really at the bottom of the ladder in that way. I'm really obsessed by WW1, reading everything I can, official histories and others, writing small articles about "famous" battle fields. I'm living very near these places and I am constantly reminded of what was going on 100 years ago, being so near these fields. So I came to the fighting aircraft and this has become a very dominant object in my life.
Thank you all for your kindness!

I know I'm far away from this thread and all my excuses for that. This said all my congratulations for you all who managed to build such wonderfull tripes. And Bud my friend I know yours will be a real beauty.

Kind regards
Patrick

Patrick, do you use an optivisor or some other magnifier?  I couldn't begin to do any
teeny work without mine. Just the rig for finding little holes, etc.  Now the colour
choices...I don't think you have much of a problem there.  The PC12 you chose for the
Tripe seems right to me.  Compare it to Rick's beautiful "Dusty".  Not a heck of a lot
of difference in shade.  Stop worrying, my friend, you are growing as a modeller by leaps
and bounds!  I'll get off my soap-box now. ;) ;D

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Rick, your Tripe is absolutely beautiful.  Very pleasing look to a PC12 aeroplane,
maybe it's the white/red diamond tail.  Gives it a dash of colour. Also, the
cockpit area and Vickers gun look first-rate.  Well done, my friend!

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Patrick,
Ernie has a point reference the Optivisor. I too can't work without it any more, it would be impossible and I find I use it more as time goes on. Do you use one or a similar product? If not I believe one would make your modelling experience and results many times better.

Lance

Hello Ernie and Lance.

Thank you once more for your very kind words. I have all sorts of magnifiers. This includes a optiviser ( brand Eschenbach), a light including a magnifier and different sorts of other magnifiers. The problem is that they all deform quite a bit. And my depth of view is awful too, maybe made worse by the magnifiers I don't know.
Anyway your kindness makes me feel a lot better my friends!

Kind regards
Patrick
Title: Re: Show us your - Sopwith Triplane
Post by: Pup Cam on January 11, 2014, 01:50:52 AM
If it's any consolation Patrick I have to resort to using magnifiers for some jobs on my 1/3 scale tiddler.

Your build looks great, I can't pass judgement on the colour of yours(or anyone elses for that matter) as I like many others are "visually challenged" in the colour department.   Many years ago I made a model of a railway level crossing and I thought it came out alright until a friend asked why I'd painted the sleepers green, so PC10 & PC12 are a complete mystery!   My plan therefore is to go and speak to my friends at the Shuttleworth collection, find out what paint they use and then get some.  Although that's probably not a viable option for the smaller scales!

Anyway, keep up the good work and the research, WW1 aviation is fascinating subject and building models is a great way to get a better understanding and can take you down some really unexpected paths.

For example, even though I say it myself, I think I've become a bit of an expert on that small but important device on most British WW1 aeroplanes; the Rotherham pump.   This is, as the name suggests, an air pump (used to pressurize the fuel system) and not an electric generator as many believe.    I only started delving into it because I had to make one.   Similarly, a friend building a 1/3 scale Bristol Scout has just got into basket weaving.  He had to make the seat!

Alan

Hello Alan,

These are very wise and comforting words, thank you so much. Indeed sometimes one starts looking for a certain info, and in the end is studying a complete different subject. At least you are an expert in something and looking at your beauty, in more then air pumps alone! Keep up the magnificent job Alan, you are doing great!

Kind regards my friend

Truly stunning, Lance!  You've got plenty of decals left to do a one gun ship.  Maybe one with an early tail for a little diversity?

Ernie,
The chipping was done using the "Hairspray" method. Cowlings were sprayed with Alclad Dull Aluminum, 2 shots of hairspray, and Tamiya SG Black with a touch of brown and grey added as the colour coat. As for that second Tripe, I'm trying to control the urge, my Stash is growing much faster then I can build my way out of this corner! ::) ( Bet I fail!! :-\)

Nice Tripes all!  Here's my Tripe, based on the Revel 1/72 kit with a bit of work done to it (scratched cockpit, re-skinned fuselage, new cowls, engine, modified tail plane, scratch built undercarriage etc...).

Hello Brad,

What a nice tripe this is! A bit of work? I think you only used the wings and a bit the fuselage of the box. This is really magnificent. The interior is stunning. Were these kinds of seats used in the tripe? Many congratulations with a wonderful build.

So many lovely Tripes here. But the one built by Brad is truly outstanding, mostly because of the real modelling work he had to put into it. And this scale... I have that Revell kit in my stash, and it is equally tempting and scaring...

For the moment, let me also join the party with a few shots of my WNW Tripe completed last autumn.

Hi all,
Sopwith Triplane, Serial No:N6301 ‘Dusty II’of No.8 (N) Squadron during May 1917, as flown by R. McDonald (8 victories).,

Mike
This model represents the Sopwith Triplane, Serial No: N6301 “DUSTY II” of No.8 N (Naval) Squadron during May of 1917.

The pilot :
Flt Lt (RNAS) Roderick McDonald (8 victories). He was born in St. Joseph’s, Nova Scotia, Canada on the 31st October 1893, the son of Angus R. McDonald and Catherine McDonald (of James River
Station, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada).
Roderick McDonald joined the RNAS in August 1916 and was posted to No.8 (N) Squadron in early 1917.  He scored 2 shared victories whilst flying Sopwith Triplane Serial No: N5472 and a single victory flying N6301 “DUSTY II”.  Later he scored a further 5 victories when flying the Sopwith
Camel.  At the age of 24 and as a Flt. Lt  in the newly formed No.208 Squadron, RAF, he was shot down and killed by Vfw Julius Trotsky of Jasta 43 on the 8th May 1918 (Trotsky himself was shot down and killed nine days later).

The aircraft:
This aircraft was one of 20 manufactured  from an order placed in January 1917 (Serial No’s: N6290 to N6309).  It arrived in France on the 24th May 1917 and was with No.8 (N) Squadron by the 28th of May.  On the 7th of June it was operating with No.10 (N) Squadron.  It moved back to No.8 (N) Squadron on the 12th of June, but by the 13th of July had been moved to No.1 (N)
Squadron.  It was while it was with No.1 (N) Squadron that this aircraft scored 2 more victories. when piloted by Act Flt Cdr FHM Maynard and Acting Flt. Lt. HV Rowley.  This aircraft was
eventually destroyed by fire in October 1917.

Here's my build of the old Revell 1:72 Tripe. It needs a LOT of correcting, including modifying the fuselage profile at the tail, scratchbuilt tail surfaces, interior, and undercarriage, modified wing mountings and cowling, correcting the shape of the cockpit opening, and reskinning with .005" sheet to reinstate the longerons, but the end result is well worth it.

In reviewing this thread, I realized that I hadn't posted any photos of my Tripes.  I feel I'm not being a team player, so here they are.

I built both the Eduard 1/48 Triplane and the WNW 1/32 Tripe side by side in order to use the WNW kit as a reference in detailing the smaller one.  Pheon decals were used on both.

Sopwith Triplane - 10 (Naval) Squadron RNAS , July 1917
N533 - Collishaw's two-gun "Black Maria". Eduard "Black Flight" kit
Another of my old 1/48 models. Can't wait to get started on the WNW 1/32 rendering.

Without this important piece of aviation history this book could probably never have been written, because it was the Sopwith Triplane that first triggered the "Triplemania"!
