Title: OK, my toes are wet...now into the deep end!
Post by: eclarson on April 19, 2012, 03:41:32 AM
Many of you have seen this before, so I hope you don't mind a re-run.   :)

A year or so after I built the DML 1/48 Dr.1, Wingnut Wings burst on the scene and though I don't normally build 1/32 scale kits, I was caught up in all the excitement and after trying to talk myself out of it, decided I must get at least one of these marvelous new kits.  The LVG,  being a big cool looking two-seater with it's varnished wood fuselage and lozenge camo on the flying surfaces, really caught my attention, and one was soon on its way from New Zealand to Akron, OH!

Unlike most new kits I buy, which usually just go into the stash after an initial exam,  the LVG went immediately to my work bench.  This build involved many "firsts" for me, including wood grain simulation on something larger than a 1/48 cockpit floor, working with lozenge decals, and real rigging, complete with turnbuckles.  Progress was slow as I researched and studied other LVG builds on various forums and then experimented with the techniques learned from those, but 9 months after the first parts were cut from their sprue, this thing sat on my bench, ready for the display shelf!   ;D

Since starting to build these kites, my eye is always drawn to woodwork effects, and you've nailed it.

Cheers,

Chris

... Wingnut Wings burst on the scene and though I don't normally build 1/32 scale kits, I was caught up in all the excitement and after trying to talk myself out of it, decided I must get at least one of these marvelous new kits...

Now, it seems to me that you´re not alone on this one. I had never built a 1/32 model, let alone a WW1 model. I bought one... and then the second... and then... the count goes in 12, and a couple more are on the way.

Excellent work on the LVG... I have two... :D waiting for some more spare time on my hands  :-\...
