I have decided to build a kit this time taking a break from scratch builds. The Macchi M.5 has been a favorite aircraft of mine ever since I first saw it, a truely beautiful looking aeroplane.
I have decided to build the engine first. The crank case is very well cast with pretty good details, apart from the casting block no other clean up was needed. The cylinders are also well done, some fine sanding was required but nothing major, the valve springs are well cast and don't need replacing.
A full build log can be found here; http://www.ww1aircraftmodels.com/page52.html
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-OjSHL5gg7Cs/VZioQR6i-nI/AAAAAAAAR44/lHA_pXzh4mo/s800/macchi%252520x%25252010.jpg)
My first obstacle came when trying to fit the rocker assembly to the top of the cylinders, the main boxes did not align with the valve springs. To rectify this I cut off each of the boxes then drilled a 2.0mm hole through the centre of each one, I then inserted a length of 2.0mm brass rod. After sitting the assembly on top of the cylinders and aligning the boxes I fixed them with CA.
The PE set contains the three rocker arms, when bent to shape and fitted to the rocker assemble it did not look at all like the real engine, I will be modifying this totally to make it look more the part.
I glued the cylinder bases and the cylinders onto the crank case, crank case has been painted with Humbrol No, 56 aluminium. I used 5 minute epoxy to fix these parts, it gave me those few minutes to make sure everything was sitting in their correct positions, slight adjustments were needed. The cylinder bases and the top of the cylinders have been painted with Mr Metal color Dark Iron while the water cooling jackets have been painted with a mix of Mr Metal color Brass and Stainless.

These photos show the modified rocker arm assembly, I utilised some parts of the PE set but made the remainder from lengths of brass tube and 0.5mm resin bolts, these simulate the adjusting bolts. I painted the rockers with Stainless paint and when dry buffed them lightly. The exhaust pipes are the kit supplied resin parts held with CA.

This will not be a fast build, I am still battling a severe chest infection so progress will only be when I am able to sit at my bench, but I have to admit, modeling is good medicine :) :)

I need to thank all these people for leaving such wonderful comments - Martin, George, Lance, Ermeio, Bud, Terri, Scott, Antonio, Ernie, Verbeek, Michael, Bo and Mark, your very kind comments are much appreciated.
I made and fitted the water pipes on one side of the engine, this will be connected to the radiator. I also fitted the inlet manifold, it does not line up very well with the inlet ports in the cylinders, I had to extend one of the pipe by 2mm. I also made and fitted the spark plugs and the ignition leads which run into the home made ignition lead tube. I have ordered Bo's magnetos as none are supplied with the kit, I still need to add more plumbing and throttle levers to the carbs. Even though the kit engine is quite nice it is missing a lot of essential elements.

Outstanding engine, Des.
Martin
-
Great work, Des!
I'm sorry to hear about the short comings of the engine. As exposed as it is, that parts are not properly supplied with the kit seems pretty unforgivable.
Bo...you picking up on this?
I and my m8 drawing up an engine from factory scale drawings.
Ron
-
Your engine is looking outstanding... as always Des! Your additions are making a good engine into a piece of art!
RAGIII
-
Spectacular work on the engine, Des! I will be watching this thread with great interest.
-
Many thanks Michael, Martin, Ron, Rick and Przemol for all the very kind comments.
You are quite right Michael saying that the missing components for the engine is unforgiveable, the engine is fully exposed so must be appropriately detailed. Some of these aircraft flew without the radiator/engine fairing which exposed the engine even further. As you already know I enjoy detailing my engines so I will be doing my best to detail this particular engine to be as close to the original as possible.
Ron, looking forward to seeing your engine once you have it completed, should be a spectacular kit.
Des.
-
Hi Des,
Have you tried placing the engine into the nacelle bottom? My engine is too deep and too wide. The result is that it does not mount as shown in the instructions and may need modification/reshaping. Just a heads up as you super detail yours.
Dave
-
Thanks Dave for the forewarning. I assembled the engine struts and the PE mounting plates, the struts are reinforced with stainless steel wire which is very hard to cut. As with your engine Dave, I also needed to file quite a bit off the bottom of the crank case to allow the engine to sit low enough to sit on the bearers, the width was spot on though. These photos show the engine and engine struts just sitting in position for photo purposes, even at this early stage the extremely attractive lines of this aeroplane are quite visible. I still need to add more details to the engine.

Beautiful work Des, and you are right about the lovely lines
of these aeroplanes. This will be gorgeous when you are done!
I hope your health is continuing to improve, my friend. :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Thanks very much Ernie for your very kind words.
My health is improving every day, it has been a long slow process though, thank you for asking.
Des.

The tail has now been fitted, I used 0.5mm copper wire for the pins to hold the elevators and rudder, this allows for adjustment to the position of the elevators and rudder if needed. I also used pins to fix the tail plane to the bottom of the fin. I will now remove the rudder and paint it before final fitment.

It is turning into a masterpiece like the preceding models
Did you add details inside the cockpit?
A very nice model from the start.
-
Thank you Ermeio for your very kind comments, I have not started the cockpit yet but when I do I will be adding as much detail as possible.
Des.
-
Exellent work like your other builds, Des.
Martin
-
It is a delight to behold, Des.
-
Thanks Martin and Przemol for your very kind comments.
Des.

Hi Des.
I've been looking forward to viewing close up pix of your enhanced engine.
I expected your results to be excellent, of course, :) but all those little extra details have elevated
the original to stardom. Very nice indeed!
-
Wow, that engine is beautiful!
-
Exellent engine, Des.
Martin
-
Amazing job of the engine, Des!
You really are a magician, my friend.
Cheers,
Ernie :)

This is looking great The engine looks very nice Have you decided on markings? I can't wait to see this finished
-
Excellent work on the engine!
You wip will be very useful for my build :D
Andrew
-
I'm not a Macchi fan but this is a treat to follow, Des. Great work on that engine.
-
the engine looks really great des. but then i expected as such.
-
Great work Des,have you noticed the wing floats.Should they be solid wood as in the kit or hung from struts? I cant find any ref in the windsock datafile ?
-
Thanks very much guys for all the nice comments, they are much appreciated.
Tram1 - I have seen many photos of the Macchi M.5 plus other versions of the same plane and the wing floats vary depending on the model. This classic photo shows a Macchi M.5 with the floats suspended on struts, but the majority of photos I have seen show the floats as being fixed directly to the wing, I will take another look at mine when I get to that stage and see what is involved in making modifications, I prefer the look of the suspended floats.

-
Hi All,
If I remember correctly, the Windsock datafile on the M-5 does identify to serial number those airframes equipped with fixed floats. I believe it was limited to the first 50. Moreover, discussion of this kit over at Large Scale Planes suggests that both of the schemes provided in the HPH kit are for aircraft with suspended floats. I will have a look when I get home from work and see if I can sort this out. Me, I am going to finish mine as one of the first 50, so I can concentrate on a natural wood finish without a lot of markings.
Des, you engine is fantastic!
Best,
Dave
-
Des, you are an amazing artist, there's just no other way to say it.
Your builds are just so precise. I've never seen close ups that still look real, I am amazed.
Mack
-
Mammut is rigth, Des. "Suspended" floats are one of features of later version of M.5. The other change introduced after initial 50 boats was rearrangement of rib layout on lower wings. The early ones had the same "dense" pattern, as the upper wing. The later ones had the lower wing ribs with larger spacing. Indeed, the majority of fancy coloured M.5s were from the later batch.
And again, great work on your model, Des.
-
Fabulous miniature engineering!!!!
Steve
-
Thanks very much Dave, Mack, Przemol and Steve for you very kind comments.
I finished all the components for the cockpit interior, again it is very basic but little is seen once closed up. Now comes the issues, the cockpit is extremely confined, the seat sits hard up against the control column, the control column (machine gun triggers) sits hard up against the instrument panel, the machine guns sit too far forward, the butt and handles should be sitting inside the cockpit. I don't know what the problems are, is the cockpit too small or are all the components too large, even the thickness of the fuselage walls at the cockpit are different and the fuselage frames do not correspond with each side. I fitted the machine gun trigger cable and the rudder cables, can't be seen now. I am very disappointed with the kit so far, every thing I have touched needs extra work, I know that this is a limited run resin kit but it is looking more like a second rate attempt to make a kit of the beautiful Macchi M.5, the price of the kit is way too high for a poor quality product.

I have temporarily fitted the bottom wings onto 1.0mm pins that are fitted to the fuselage, I still need to adjust the dihedral which will be set at 3º. The wings will be removed so the fuselage can be painted.

-
Sorry to hear that Des. But you make a very great build.
Martin
-
Also sorry to hear of the kits shortcomings.... but what you have done so far with it looks fantastic
-
Des,
Sorry to hear this Kit is so disappointing despite all your efforts and the expense. I'm not sure I'd have your patience with this one. It's short comings are no doubt worse then you represent them given your skills; as Petrov says it looks fantastic at first glance however the dimension problems are not easily, if at all, remedied. I definitely will be waiting for another brand of this subject; this one, even leaving the price out of the equation, looks like trouble! Struggling at every step definitely takes the fun out of the exercise!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Des, (and anyone else who needs them)
here are 1/32nd scale drawings of the Macchi M5 floats used by the majority of production machines, the dimensions are taken from factory drawings. The struts should be constructed over-length and trimmed to an exact fit on the model. These were originally prepared for our 1/48th decals and the Blue Max kit.

Des, it is a bummer that the kit is so lacking in basic quality! On the other hand your skills are certainly making the Model look great!

Des, it is a bummer that the kit is so lacking in basic quality! On the other hand your skills are certainly making the Model look great!
RAGIII
I agree with my amigo, Des! You're bringing your usual high level of craftsmanship to this disappointing kit, just as you did with that Omega kit. High price does not always translate to high quality.
Cheers,
Bud
-
It would be nice if Ray reprinted the Datafile for this plane.
Martin
-
Des, I totally agree with Bud and Rick. Despite the many problems
with the kit, your talents are shining through. To me it looks wonderful!
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
I have been swithering over buying this kit since it's release but have been put off by the high price. This sort of money for a single seater really begs a quality of the order of WNW or similar, as far as I am concerned.
Can I express a personal thanks to you Des for your frank appraisal of the kit's shortcomings. Also my continuing unbounded admiration for your skill in turning this particular sow's ear into a silk purse!
Sandy
-
You've still made a silk purse though. Attention Mr Aviattic..........
Steve
-
Trust me guys the one we are making is up to standard, Des is doing a great job though.
Keep in mind that the datafile drawings are also not correct!
Ron
-
Many thanks to the following people who have taken the time to look at my model and to leave very kind messages, Martin, Petrov, Lance, Rowan, Rick, Bud, Ernie, Sandy, Steve and Ron.
Rowan - thank you for posting the picture of the suspended floats, this will be excellent if I decide to change mine.
Ron, I look forward so much to the release of your kit, it will be a beauty. Thank you for your comments on my current build, I have never let a kit beat me and I am not going to let this one be the first.
Des.
-
I think your build looks great so far The harder the build the more proud you'll be of the finished kit I've always found and so far you have a lot to be proud of
-
a real pity that the kit is giving you so much trouble, I know the feeling. On the other hand, a modeller like you is 100% able to turn it into showstopper. Still, sometimes we just want a relaxing build, without oo much hassle and when the build appeared soemthing completely different, the frustration is really there.
What can i Say of the build itself - it is forming really beautifully and th eengine itself is just WOW!
best regards,
Sasho
-
Hi Des,
You build is looking great! I hope to make some progress on mine this week. One observation on your engine supports. There should be cross braces between all three uprights as shown in this photo.
(http://i1355.photobucket.com/albums/q707/mammut08/macchi_zpsc6qo9djn.jpg) (http://s1355.photobucket.com/user/mammut08/media/macchi_zpsc6qo9djn.jpg.html)
Best,
Dave
-
Thanks Dave for the info on the braces between the struts, I already have the front one fitted but have not as yet got around to fitting the centre and rear braces, I also have to fit all the eyelets for the engine support rigging, I will not rig it until it is fitted to the aeroplane. I painted the base coat then oil paint to simulate the timber fuselage, it is now in my heat box and will take a day or two to dry thoroughly.
Des.
-
How disappointing to hear of all those deficiencies the kit as shown so far - nevertheless i still can not decide what impresses me more: The level of detail you are able to achieve, despite all those problems, or the skill you show with your photos.
Keep pressing one, please!
Stefan
-
I have added the 'wood' to the fuselage, for this I first base coated with Gunze H85 Sail Colour then Burnt Sienna oil paints, once it was all dry I sprayed a few light coats of clear yellow. I have also fitted the two magnetos, these are the ones designed by Bo and made by Shapeways, a brilliant product and very easy to assemble and paint, I had to modify the rear of the engine to accommodate the magnetos but I'm pleased that I did as they are a very essential part of the engine, I can't believe that HpH did not included them with the kit.

Brilliant work all around, Des! That engine looks terrific!
George

Thanks very much George for your very kind comments. The engine built OOB is quite basic but with a little extra work it turns out to be an acceptable engine, the magnetos really finish it off beautifully.
Des.
-
Beautiful update Des.
Martin
-
Thank you Martin and Bo for your very nice comments, they are much appreciated.
Bo, the magnetos are excellent and are so easy to assemble and paint, I will be buying more to keep as spares for my scratch builds.
I painted the top forward fuselage, I used Gunze H1 full gloss white which sprayed beautifully, the lower hull will be done the same colour.

Des,
You've out done yourself again my old friend. You truly do rate Master Level. I read through your scratch built section on the home page last evening. I've never seen such a grand collection , each a Magnum Opus.

-
It comes up fantastic.
Martin
-
My many thanks to Ernie, Michael, Rick, Gregory and Martin for all your very kind comments, they are very much appreciated.
Des.
-
superlative, Des !
The engine is a model in itself
Pay attention to the cross braces between the uprights - they have a tensioning buckle in their middle
You can represent it with putty or a blob of color - it is a shapeless protuberance
-
Hello gentlemen and ladies,
Yeah, paint is coming, in a beautiful way. It looks like a racer.
Best regards.
Alain.
-
Thank you Ermeio and Alain for your much appreciated comments.
I painted the lower part of the hull using the same Gunze Full Gloss White as I did on the top. I have also noticed that the engine is sitting too far aft, the propeller does not pass through the hollowed out section in the fuselage, in real life this would cause huge issues, bits of wood would be flying everywhere ??? ??? but on the model the propeller can be position in such a way as not to be noticed. I have also clear coated the wood and painted surfaces with a clear gloss ready for decals.
Des.

Your painting looks very great, Des.
Martin
-
It is terrific Des!
Please remember that these circular holes ahead of the cockpit are portholes to let some light shine through upon the guns.
Someone (wrongly) interpreted them as fuel caps - they are covered with cellon.
There is a fuel cap behind the cockpit, do not forget it, else it becomes difficult to position after the top wing is in place.
I appreciate this model
-
Lovely paintwork on the hull, Des. The propeller being a bit too far
back really doesn't distract from the model at all. Excellent progress,
my friend.
Cheers,
Ernie :)

I hope that this image will help.
There is also a small hole to let the wires pass through on each side of the fuselage.
A great rendition of the wood!

With help from Ermeio the issue with the engine sitting too far rearward has been solved. I have checked a lot of reference material and found that on this model the engine support frame is in the incorrect position, it should be 5mm further forward, this would allow the propeller to sit in the correct position over the fuselage. It is too late for me to make corrections to my model but if anyone else is building this kit it would be highly advisable to make the alterations early in the build.

It took quite a bit of detective work but I found the location of the fuel filler cap, photos of this area are extremely hard to come by but with help from Ermeio and some searching by me we came across two photos which show the location, not clear photos but good enough. I have now added the fuel filler cap, the fuel tank sits directly behind the pilot.

Thanks to Rick, Lance and Martin for your very kind comments.
Rick, I have added the markings to the front of the aircraft but the roundels are translucent showing the wood colour through and then a distinct line with the white. I cut and added another circle of white decal paper and placed it over the roundel but there is still a slight difference between the wood and the white showing through. If I had known that this decal was so translucent I would have applied a solid white circle first then the decal, we live and learn.

Hi Des,
You are making some great progress. I wish I had your detailing skips. That engine is outstanding and I love the fuel filler cap. Good to know about the decals. I have been debating decals vs masks, but it looks like it's time to fire up my silhouette portrait and cut some roundels.
Best,
Dave

Fantastic progress on this lovely flying boat, Des. It will surely turn into another of your masterpieces.

your talents, Des it will be a jewel! Nice start on the markings., my friend.

Thanks very much for your very kind compliments Dave, Przemol and Ernie.
The engine support frame and engine are now fixed in place, the support frame rigging is also completed. I also made and added the small vent pipe for the fuel filler cap. The decals have now been applied, the repairs to the roundel are not too bad.

Even with all of its misgivings this kit is starting to shape up as a very nice looking model, the Macchi has always been one of my favorite WW1 aircraft and the more I work on this model the more I can see why, it is a gorgeous shape, so perfectly proportioned, just a beautiful looking aeroplane.

Thanks Bob for looking in and leaving very kind comments.
I have decided to add the suspended wing floats and thanks to Rowan I was able to use his 1:32 scale drawings of the floats as a template, they printed out in exact 1:32 scale. I made the floats from styrene sheet then made the brackets from 0.5mm copper wire, the floats will be painted the same wood colour as the hull and the brackets will be black. The tail and wings have been painted with Hobby Color H313 Yellow then coated with a low sheen clear. I also added the two stays under the tail plane, these are made from 1.0mm brass tube. The rudder colours have been painted using a combination of Gunze and Humbrol paints.

It is now a waiting game, I oil painted the floats, the wing struts and the propeller, all parts are in my heat box drying, it is cold weather here today so I will leave the heat box running for two days. I also painted the top wing and applied the decals and I am in the process of putting together the beaching trolley and the two stands.
Des.
-
I am looking forward to the photos!
RAGIII
-
Here you go Rick, some photos of the beaching trolley and stands. They went together very easy with the use of PVA wood glue. I decided to paint them with Gunze H66 Sandy Brown instead of using oils, I still need to spray them with a matt clear. The trolley fits the hull beautifully and the stands can be positioned to suit your own preferences. The top wing is nearly done, just need to add the red and green to the under side then a coat of satin clear.

Thanks very much Scott for following along and leaving very kind comments.
I made and added the wing floats, the float brackets are made from 0.5mm copper wire while the floats are made from styrene sheet. In my opinion the suspended floats look better than the floats fitted directly to the wing which are supplied with the kit. Note that the propeller has also been painted and is now fitted to the engine.

This is really coming together nicely - really great work!
I was skeptical on the very-flat looking die cut trolley wheel parts but what you have done with them it seems they can be made to look very good indeed. I also agree with the suspended floats looking better (and being correct for the provided decal schemes) - I am fairly frustrated they did not include these with the kit itself....
-
I wish to convey my many thanks to Przemol, Ian, Bob, Pietro, Martin, Ondra and Petrov for your extremely kind comments.
Like you Petrov I am also frustrated with the lack of certain parts of the kit. The floats not being available to suit both types is quite unforgiveable, also the lack of engine detail parts especially for an engine that is highly exposed. I will give a full account of the kit once I have mine completed, so far it has scored about 6/10.
Des.
-
Absolutely sublime, Des. The kit may be a 6/10, but with your
knowledge and talents has become a 10/10! Bravo, my friend!
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Thanks Ernie for your very kind comments.
The top wing and outer struts are now fitted, still need to add the cabane struts. I added the landing rigging to support the bottom wing and to maintain the dihedral, the top wing is quite heavy and adds a lot of weight to the bottom wing, the cabane struts will take some of the pressure off the bottom wing. I used monofilament for the landing rigging because I had to apply a lot of tension. Once I add the flying wires the wing will be centred.

I love it when the model is to such a fine scale that the rigging is not only a cosmetic addition for looks, but is actually functional to the integrity of the structure. Very nice!

Wow, I am overwhelmed with the response to this build, many thanks must go to the following people who have left really kind and generous remarks since my last update - First Tee, Sobrien, Mark, Michael, Rick, Gregory, George, Pietro, Justin and Martin.
I forgot to mention in my previous update that the top wing went on extremely easy, just a matter of having the top wing sitting on my bench, upside down, then sitting the inverted model onto the wing, a few drops of CA here and there holds it all together. I have since fitted the cabane struts and as predicted they have taken a lot of the pressure off the bottom wings, they actually lifted the bottom wings a tad. The cabanes were easy to fit again done with the model in an inverted position, there is a huge gap between the top and bottom wings so this allows plenty of room to work. My rating for this kit has just risen to 7/10.

Des. man oh man, I love it!
Pietro
-
this is turning out to be an amazing looking model. congrats
-
Thank you Pietro and Scott for your very nice comments.
The Macchi M.5 is now completed. Apart from a few shortcomings the kit scrubbed up to be a nice looking model, lack of detail on the engine was my main issue but a bit of scratch building and the addition of two magnetos from Bo helped struce up the engine. The cockpit is a bit cramped but it still looks acceptable. The remainder of the assembly was quite straight forward with reasonably easy rigging. Not shown in the instructions but I added the aileron control cables which come from the rear of the cockpit to the under side of the top wing. Not having the option of the two types of wing floats is I believe a major blunder. My rating for this kit now that it is completed is 7.5/10, not bad for a limited run resin kit.
Two photos here, there are more in the completed models board.

Des, you say you are disappointed with the kit. However the finished article is incredible - the M.5 is a beautiful machine typical of Italian engineering of the time and you really have brought it to life.
Incredible build.
-
Thank you James for your very kind remarks. The reason I purchased and built this kit is because the Macchi M.5 has always been one of my favorite aeroplanes, such beautiful lines. It was just a shame that HpH didn't take it that little bit further and add the details that are needed. I'm hoping that the Macchi M.7 that Ron is working on will be a real gem when released.
Des.
-
I must admit I was very tempted to break a promise to myself (only 1 genre and from only one brand.) and purchase the HpH Macchi M.5 as it truly is a work of mechanical art - however after reading your build log I now realise it was the right decision not to, if an artist as yourself that built and incredible rendition found it challenging and frustrating I think it would have been way beyond my own skill level.
You should be very proud of this build!

Wow what a beutiful build ! I hope mine turns out half as nice Lets hope that HPH sells enough to justify another WW1 kit And that they improve on every one they do
