Title: Finished: 1/48 Voisin 10 Ca2 (modified Hi-Tech kit)
Post by: huberlu on June 06, 2015, 04:39:27 PM
Hello,

I want to  make this Voisin since long time ... in fact since I saw the magnificent Voisin from "Cage à poules" here:

http://fighters.forumactif.com/t34885-voisin-10-lar-hi-tech-au-48eme?highlight=voisin (http://fighters.forumactif.com/t34885-voisin-10-lar-hi-tech-au-48eme?highlight=voisin)

http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19848 (http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19848)

I searched a long time on the internet, but they are not a lot of information regarding the "Voisin X lar"

So I decided to make a Voisin 10 Ca2 armed with a gun. Now I no longer need to look for photos, they are there:

http://memorial.flight.free.fr/Voisin10uk.html (http://memorial.flight.free.fr/Voisin10uk.html)

As  the manual said, the Hi-Tech kit is not ACCUTAMYGAWA ...

The cockpit must be done:

I deleted the floor to have a flat on and  to have well flat walls.

Hi-Tech has had the good idea to provide "opening" of the cockpit for a version other than that of the box (the bottom part of the picture).

Amounts are cut into sections "evergreen" 0.25 X 0.75 and glued to the stems T

The edge of the cabin and floor profiles are 0.5 X 0.5. and 1x1.

Everything is painted in aluminum and will be skated. I started but I did not used to work the aluminum. I grope ...

The seat is  photoetched part but does not suit me.  It is redesigned to resemble that seen in "memorial flight", not forgetting the big cushion. it will add the belts.

The dashboard will host the big compass. It will be placed in the hole in "half circle" on the shelf  made for the occasion.

The steering wheel is redone from the kit by rounding the corners with a round file (in red). It's a bit long to do ...

The two blocks down the handle are those of the kit, the top of the handle toothed wheel is made from a "trap" photoeched of the board of DV eduard (I have no punch to make records so small ..).

(http://width=512 height=600]http://i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo21/louisetcie/voisin%20X/IMG_07151_zpssfr4d70w.jpg)

It lacks the chain and cables.

... that's all.

Regards

Thank you.

Does anyone know what the purpose of the wooden thing full of holes?

Do the holes allow storing ammunition for the gun ? Much like storage for wine bottles?

Cool project. I saw this on display in Paris last autumn.

I think the holes are simply to lighten the structure  - it would be quite awkward using them for ammunition storage i would think... But I'm not sure! Is the same structure present in the non-cannon armed X?

...or maybe that this is a magazine after all. Staring at the photos leaves me wondering other purpose it could possibly have.

Here is a link to the photos I took of it at Le Bourget in October. Maybe something useful, I don't know.

Wouldn't that be a reinforced former when the cannon was fired from the sides of the fuselage ? It does side on the track ...

Thank you,

Hello,

Maybe it is a reinforcement to stiffen the structure.

Or protection for hiding cables through the cabin (read on a forum)

The rudder and the handle close to the seat:

3 switches on the dashboard, turned on a lathe with one plastic rod (diameter 1mm)  and a selector (?) on the left side.

The dual throttle. The circular arc is a piece of lead wire crushed with a ruler on a glass plate.

The handles are made of plastic.

Both sides of the cab are glued and must be abraded copiously...

Thank you very much!!!!

Well...

The windshield is not beautiful, it is full of bubbles and not transparent at all. Its central part is too short and I think I'll have to cut it to enlarge a little.
In addition I split ... misery.

In front of the windscreen there are two components that can (for real) open and which are partly transparent. So I just removed to replace with a piece of transparent plastic. It's a little too flat now ... I'll stick can be above the two components to put a little thick.

I made a fire extinguisher to put next to the cannon (shot plastic).

The engine does not please me. It's a shame it's all there but everything is crooked.

I bought a machine gun Hotchkiss M 1914 models directly from GasPatch, delivered in 4 days. I let you judge the pictures the quality of their work:

Nice to see more progress on this kit but it is a real disappointment to run into so many issues with the kit, the engine looks as though it will need an enormous amount of work or a complete rebuild. I will be following along to see how you overcome these problems. On a brighter note, the machine gun looks brilliant as does the fire extinguisher.

nice progress louis, i didnt realize they used the heavy hotchkiss on the voisin aircraft. i wondered which ones use this gun, i mostly used to see the 1909 on french fighter planes. voisin has a big wingspan.

as far as the engine maybe you have to make a cylinder like you did for the freidrichshafen ff33e by techmod.

Hello,

I read somewhere that the Hotchkiss 1909 was lighter and generally more used than the Hotchkiss 1914, which was too heavy.

So I took the opportunity to buy both machine gun!!! The 1909 is equally beautiful!

I will choose which used later.

I will make a mold for a pair of cylinder.

nice update louis,i lways enjoy your builds. i saw somewhere that the 1914 hotchkiss was used alot by ground troops on a tripod. it must have been used on some aircraft or else why did gaspatch make one. i did not research this before but i wonder which aircraft used it. have  lot of books and datafiles i must have a look.

Hello!

The engine is started:

I made it in two parts to be able to easily put the binding that connects the two parts.
The lengths are calculated from the plan with more or less accuracy ... Ditto for the general shape of the engine block.

You can find the plan here:

http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/443899Renault12FeFi0003.jpg

The top of the cylinder head is flat:

Hi !

I remade the cylinders entirely with evergreen plastic, I could not stick the small parts cleanly with superglue on the  resin parts, and their foot was too short. It was long and painful ...

The springs are made of copper wire (gold), found in "fly fishing" shop. It is thinner than the wire.

I wanted to make them conical. Well... believe me it is difficult to find the point suitable for winding the wire over.

Finally I 'm using an old needle (fine) my airbrush (Pasch).

Everything is covered with "surfacer".

Welds are plastic yarn stuck to the liquid adhesive and crushed with the back of the tweezers

The shape could have been crowned at the top ... but I do not want to start over.

Tomorrow I make the mold.

Regards

Hello!

After two molds ... and half the prints unusable, I managed to make 6 pairs of cylinders I needed. They are far from perfect.
The base of the cylinder is not flat and I can not sanded properly for they become. So I had to drill holes in the top of the engine block so I can place them correctly. .

It's long to do ...

This one is the most successful of the entire series.

The mold is made of a single piece of silicon, cut with a scalpel only at the base of the cylinders to limit the track joint.
Of course there are lots of bubbles in the resin.

Rest sanding.

Someone can tell us if the "yellowish varnishes" which seems to cover these engines were applied consistently? I do not remember seeing it on other engines ...

I think "yellow varnish" you refer to is probably cooked-on oil staining + effects of lighting/reflection and white balance setting on camera. HTH

Your engine is looking great!

Hello!

The engine mounting ends slowly ...

The cylinders are bonded in the holes. Missing bolts at the base of the cylinders.

Pipes are plastic, the collars are made of "cotton bud" stretched.

The copper tubing is stretched plastic.

24 candles are stretched plastic. I lost a few along the way. I also lost valve springs ...

The vertical rod at the back should be against the last cylinder. Too bad for her.
The aluminum structure is a cylinder on evergreen 1 mm rod with rings of metal tape.

The engine block is in "white aluminum" Alclad but it shines too. The matt varnish is nothing changed. Cylinders and are skated with him "engine grime" from AK.

Regards.

Hello,

The cabin is closed.
The rivets of the kits are too big (white) ...

I have plugged and sanded. I redid them with "surfacing" and with a stencil. If it does not work I will use rivets decals but it's not cheap ...

The stencil used on the flank are thinner and are pierced with a needle in an aluminum foil (food tray). Once pierced I sand a little stencil to remove the bulges around the holes. as the holes have a rounded shape.

Not sure we see them after painting ...

Stencils on the picture (plastic 0.2 mm) are those used in front of the plane, the holes are drilled with a drill 0.3mm. Several passages (7 or 8?) Airbrush are needed to obtain enough rivets marked. As it dries very quickly this is done quickly.
The smoother side of the stencil is brought in contact with the flank of the aircraft.

- The stencil aluminum is easy to clean and reuse the rivet but remains flat.

- The plastic it deforms quickly because the diluent.

- With a transparent stencil it would be easier to position.

- It works much better with a new stencil, clean.

Hello!

The landing gear are re-cut to size (I hope):

I used the plane of the kit I expanded to the length of the fuselage match that of the kit.

The hole for attaching the front landing gear ...

The tanks are detailed. Above the cap. Below, the mouthpiece through which released a pipe, on the side that I think is the gauge. I made a little too large.
Too bad, we will see better.

So there will be in the central disk with a black dial needle and graduations. I just hope to have interpreted the pictures correctly.
If anyone knows more about this ...

The new strut of the tail (1 mm diameter):

Vertical upright must all be sanded (a lot) and sometimes recut.

The new windshield is glued.

The transparent plate used to assemble the windshield with the rest of the pod to form a pretty solid set.

On the transparent plate I plan to add the trap made of plastic sheet. That of the photo is a test.

Thank you.

The upper wing, so long that it bends.

It was passed to the steel wool and surfacing.

The top of the wings will be painted as specified in the manual.

" The wings:

under surfaces: 1 coat of clear dope (No. 1), 2 coats of optical black dope and 1 finishing coat of clear dope (No. 3); The roundels are painted with paint Ripolin under the lower wing.
Upper surfaces: 1 coat of clear dope (No. 1), 1 coat of optical black dope, 1 coat of red optical dope (a semi translucent color) and 1 finishing coat of clear dope.
No roundels on upper wing, flat tail and rudder, at least on the manual.
Since we do not-have wings for the Voisin 10, I can not tell you what color the upper shoulds looks like, goal It Would be interesting to try it a panel, I'll think about it!"

So:

- A clear coat on the canvas.
- An "optical black" layer (translucent black) so black ...
- An "optical red" layer (translucent red), varnish mixed with red.

This gives a chocolate hue ... which obviously changes depending on the proportion of red (on the test picture below: red 1/3 or 1 red varnish / varnish 1). The lighter shade is due to the varnish which "laundered". Darkest are black.

Hello,

The top of the wing:

1 X red+ 3 X clear + 12 x thinner

At least 5 or 6 layers on the black

The surface is not terrible. the varnish does not help.  I will put satin varnish, may be.

Before:

The cocardes are made with stencilled. Blue is too clear. The red a bit dark too.

Hello!
Make rivets ( "as" those sold by Archer):

To move and to avoid any destroy for errors I made them on a piece of very thin decal (FFSMC here).
The stencil is attached to a length (top of photo). On the other (bottom) I put a ruler to the stencil is resting on the piece of decal.
Several passages with surfacer mr Hobby ... (9 round trip ...) are required to obtain enough rivets marked.

Stencils on the photo (plastic 0.2 mm) are drilled at 0.3mm drill. The gap between each rivet is 1.5 mm.

We go the full length aero well perpendicular to the stencil. The layer should be smooth so that all rivets have the same height. The smoothest side of the stencil is placed in contact with the piece of decal.

I remove the stencil when finished so they do not stick the stencil:

It works much better with a new and clean stencil. As the plastic melts with the solvent not about cleaning. I pumice to remove the surfacer and give a helping drill into each hole. It is more quickly (believe me) than rewriting a stencil. 5min to clean one in the photo.

The windshield is finished:

Alas, all glass parts are prominent.

So I cut (in sheets for "overhead projector") and twisted the two glass parts They are then glued to the windshield with glue that hardens under the action of UV.

The edge of the "bathtub" is stuck:

Hello!

Paints:

I used the colors offered by Wingnutwings in their kit: Tamiya XF58 and 68 without adding color.

The interior is almost finished. Dials come from Eduard and some pieces are homemade (switches, door card):

The support is tinkered with brass tubes. The gun comes from "Gaspatch"

The slide of the gun is stuck.

The amounts of the windshield are painted. The two glass traps are placed in clear plastic window on the first (the one below). They are almost finished.

The tanks are also almost finished. The dials have received their little glass ... although the dust is seen in black paint. The wing is worse.

The engine is stuck.

The highest hole in the fuselage wall was to receive an axis through the two black brackets that support the motor. I have forgot to put it. He was ready yet. Pity. Now it will be more complicated and less solid.

The reservoir (oil I think) received his leads (blue pipe that comes out behind the pilot's head) and leads his cap.

Absolutely beautiful work my old friend. Even more impressive by the fact that this is the only kit I ever was completely beaten by. I fought my example for nearly a year before tossing in the trash. Short shots, warping and just awful from the word go. I even went as far as turning down a replacement from my local hobby shop. Seeing what you've done with this project only makes me appreciate your Master Class skill and craftsmanship and talent all the more. Well Done Louis, keep up the inspiring work.

The engine is finished ... it just remains to be 8 tailpipes going up to 6 of them through the wing and find how to place them correctly and then paste while the wing sup. is in place.
I do not deny that I'm a little tired

The pipes of the radiators are glued:

.. the photos of this time are few and often very dark at this place. The pipes and their positions depend on the type of engine installed...of course.

Thank you.

Hello,

The wheels are painted. They are not very beautiful, the rays in photodecoups are a little thick and especially irregular (as on all my photo etched board, no straight lines only "steps of stairs" ...).

The springs of the undercarriages are supplied and usable. To center them I wind a piece of copper wire around the rods of the train (redone because thick).

The front axle arms are metal tube (1mm) flattened at the ends to the clamp. The pierced photo etched piece (bottom) is slid in and glued.

Sticking the undercarriages is a real probleme. No plan, only picures by ensuring that the fuselage remains horizontal.

I stuck a part to the epoxie and the superglue ... I'm not sure that it holds. When I put it on the wheels the wire of the front train relax ...

The projector ramp is made. Two evenings just to cut and glue the three panes ...

The bulbs are made of transparent plastic stretched then heated by the flame (it makes a small ball when it does not catch fire...). Painted yellow mixed with varnish.

Hello,

I have finished all the rigging (almost). There remain the flight control cables, brakes and other stuff to stick.

The flat rigging are in "evergreen" as thin as possible and stretched with an embers (match). The hardest part is to stick them securely.
The rigging between the wings are made of fishing line as well as those on the tail

The tail is fixed with a small piece of steel wire that fits into the brass rod and into the pierced wing. To my surprise it's pretty solid. I have not broken it yet despite the many manipulations.
Only worries is the size of the wings, they distort when I turn the plane and the rigging take off. The wings tend to make the swing around the attachment of the undercarriage under the fuselage.

The big cockroach on the back:
It is for gluing flat shrouds ...

The empennage will be glued at the end, fixed on two half-washers from the kit:

The rudder I had painted, with love and the greatest care, is ... black on all the pictures I've seen. So I covered with black and I took the opportunity to let appear the colors of the undercoat. The serial is fictitious and the font too "modern". The decals come from Corsair Heller.

The pipes supplying the engine with fuel made of lead wire glued.

The wooden reinforcement pierced on all sides:

After a lot of testing (really full ...), I decided to make a drawing on the computer, print it and then paste it. No way to do a good thing without it.
The piece is in three parts.

The exhaust pipes (probably a bit too long here) are made of brass diameter 1mm. It is a little thin but 1.5 mm is too big ..

Thank you !

The rudder is controlled by two cables (one on each side of the plane) that line the lower beams ...

... each cable passes through a pulley attached to the foot of the mat ...

Pulley on the inside of the mat:

Or pulley to the "outside" of the mat, you have the choice:

... then enters the cockpit somewhere there. I did not find precisely where.

As for how they are attached to the rudder I have no info.

The ailerons are connected to each other by a rigid bar and controlled by cables which come out of the wings by a pulley. One at the top, one at the bottom.

The exact position of the cables ... between the mats, on the same side, on both sides etc etc I did at best.

The Pitot tube (well, I think that's it).

The plane is fixed to its base, there are so many cables that moving the plane is difficult. The wings are so long that they deform when I lift it. This eventually breaks the cables.

So I put two fishing lines through the base and I put them through each wheel, passing between two rays, knots and some glue.

Hello.

Figurine:

I used "FIMO" paste found in all graphic art shops or in some supermarkets. It's sold in small quantities and it's cheap.

The goal was to get something resembling the man sitting on the wheel.

The suit, very wide, with the helmet so seating.

The first version of the head, too big with a nose too low:

The helmet is a German helmet (2ww) reworked and modified with 2 components Tamiya mastics which is very easy to model.

The new, more classic head:

With the woolen hood that stings:

All dark parts are in 2 component Tamiya Mastics.

I admit that for once I am pretty happy with the result.

Regards

Hello!

I wanted to make a scene with a lot of gas in front of the plane. Alas it is too long to manufacture and very very boring.   that serve as a buffer. The white line is a piece of decal.
The posters on the boxes are paper copies.

The circular hollows on both sides of the can is made with an old steel rod and a hammer blow.

Mr. Eduard (or M. Copper State, or M. Renaissance), if you read our montages sometimes, you could make pretty cans and wooden boxes. It would not cost you anything to design them and there are blue, yellow, red, long, short, cubic, ... enough to make many different versions in one box. And if you can make them in resin it would be better.
