Title: My latest completion
Post by: sobrien on April 19, 2012, 01:47:25 AM
This is my latest build. Hobbycraft SPAD XIII built as a SPA 94 airplane. SPA 94 markings are mine. Started last August and just now got the time to finish it. Some struggles, mostly with the Hobbycraft decals. I'm still a brush painter too. I have to learn how to use the airbrush that is collecting dust in my closet.

Control panel was a resin casting made by Scott, Albatros1234. He did a great job on it and I would recommend it to anyone building this kit.

Awesome SPAD XIII my friend. An outstanding example of a Kellner build SPAD camouflage. Bravo and Well Done.

A beautiful looking Spad Sean, your brush painting skills are superb where you have created an excellent overall finish, very well done.

Sean,

forgive my inexperience, but how do/did you get a nice smooth paint join between the various colours on this nicely done SPAD? I'll be a brush painter for a while yet and it looks a trifle difficult....

Heck, leave the airbrush in the closet as your brush work looks superb. And here I thought that I'd have to build German machines if I wanted to do colourful marking schemes. Evidently, I was wrong.

Chris

Andrew, I don't know how I do it other than I've done brush painting for over 45 years. I try not to put too much paint on the brush and I buy good brushes. I mask off things too, this wasn't done free hand. Well not all of it anyways.
The paints were all Model Master paints on this one. I prefer Humbrol but the Hobby Shops in my area no longer stock it. I have ordered some on line before though.
I'm at work now, so I'll post the actual colors I used later if you want.

Glad people have enjoyed the SPAD, I tend to over criticize myself.

Beautiful SPAD Sean..... Love the 5 color French Camo ...... Brush painted hmmmm I think its time you dust off that airbrush ...... If you can do this with a brush, I can't wait to see what you can do once you fire up that airbrush!

Thanks again for all the comments.
Rob Hart- the paints I used are Model Master paints. I used Panzer Interior Buff for the under-surfaces and then French Chestnut, Dark Green(B-52), Green, Black, and Afrika Braun for the 5 color camo. I used the Ultimate Paint Conversion Chart that can be found here http://www.paint4models.com/index.html to tried to match the paints to what other modelers had used. For the struts and propeller I used Humbrol Clear Orange over Model Master Wood. I really like the way this turned out. Now  I need to get the Roden SPAD VII to set along side it.
