All,
All of this awesome activity on the vac site has prompted me to start another one too. The Staaken is almost done so I need another vac fix.
It also helps that there appears to be some WNW AEG Fever as of late. I can use those lovely builds for some help on this little brother.
Anyway just starting and I'll be cutting out main parts tonight. Stay tuned!
Dan
-
Great project you have taken on Dan, looking forward to seeing you start this build.
Des.
-
Enjoy the Build, Dan. I will enjoy following your progress. :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
That looks like quite a beast! When you said you were considering an AEG I thought you were talking about the smaller C.IV. I'll be looking forward to watching you put this one together.
-Dan
-
I'll be watching this for tips - I have my Merlin one on the shortlist as soon as Aviattic's hex camo is available.
Ian
-
Will be following this one !
Terri
-
You are a brave, brave man! I'll definitely stay tuned for this.
Warren
-
All,
I just got all the parts out, sandwiched the wings together, cut out cockpits etc. and here you see it sitting on the bench just for show. The stab in the kit has a top and bottom but I'm just using one side and sanding. I think that will ultimately look a bit better.
You can see one cowl is together too. My plan is to have one engine open and one cowled. We'll see how far that plan goes. I'm loving looking at the WNW AEG builds since those will help with my interior etc. a lot. Keep building!!! ;D
Thanks for looking,
Dan
-
Very good Dan.
Martin
-
Geez, you're almost done already! Nice to see you back at it, makes me want to start another one.
-Dan the Other
-
Keep on keeping on brother!
Warren
-
You have taken a few giant leaps with this build Dan, it is looking really good so far.
Des.
-
looking really good there all set up on the work surface - you are moving right along!
-
All,
This little guy is moving along and going quite smoothly. :D
I modified the cockpit openings to look more like the correct shapes...though the nose section should be more of a round opening (I think) but I'll leave that one "as is". The tails and struts went on easily, the fuselage closed and I cut the lower wing apart at the dihedral joint so I can put it together in sections like the real one. I also put a nice brass tube through the lower wing and fuselage making this all very strong. Various struts have also started to be added.
I'll start working on getting the cabanes in position or at least mocked up a bit and then do the interior. The cockpit openings are so large, the interior will be quite easy to finish even with the fuselage sides together. This will also make it easier to add pieces since the finished dimensions will be easier to match.
Really a fun build and starting to take shape!
Cheers,
Dan
-
Great work Dan.
Martin
-
Thanks, Martin. I wish I could show it to the folks of Classic Plane if that group still exists (and if my model turns out ;))
Cheers,
Dan
-
That looks great Dan, hard to believe it is a vac kit, you have done a superb job.
Des.
-
Nice work, Dan - already looking like an AEG!
Ian
-
All,
I have almost all of the interior done but still need some little extras. I need to add in some side wall materials and extra ammo as well as seatbelts. I also got the top center section sitting in the correct place along with the associated cabane struts. They are cemented into the fuselage but only sitting in holes on the underside of the top wing. Really starting to look like a plane now...

I tried shooting in natural light so my pictures don't look too great. I should have waiting until dark as usual and use my lights...
Next will be starting to fabricate the two engines and even start some painting too. Lots needs to be painted before assembly so I'll need to plan things a bit from here on out...
This thing will look so cool next to my Roden Gotha and Staaken. All I need now is a Friedrichshafen and I'll be set. Does anyone know if a vac of that one was ever produced???
Cheers,
Dan
-
Looking very good Dan!
Re the Friedrichshafen G.III, both Sierra Scale and Formaplane made a vac of it. I happen to have both - the Sierra Scale is better, but doesn't have white metal wheels. I would be willing to part with the Formaplane one. It includes white metal wheels and props and I'll add white metal engines too. No decals or instructions, but I could always copy the Sierra scale instructions and include those as a guide.....
Let me know if you're interested.
Ian
-
Dan,
That's going to look cool no matter what its next to! It makes me want to start the Rareplanes Gotha I have in the stash but after I get it out and look at it (again!) I realize I might need a bit more experience before tackling something like that. Someday though!
Dan
-
Realy very good Dan.
Martin
-
You make everything look so easy, Dan! You
are doing an amazing job on the AEG, my friend.
Looking forward to the next installment. :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
She is really taking shape now Dan :)
Terri
-
wow! Excellent job. I would like to have courage to do some vac plane in a future.
-
She's really looking good, Dan. This will be a very impressive addition to your collection.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Beautiful work! This is coming along quite nicely!
RAGIII
-
Finally...a bit more!
I got the landing gear on and also am test fitting the top wing. I also thinned the trailing edges so now I'll start playing with the engines and mounts.
More sooner than later...Dan ;)
-
Brilliant work, Dan! That wing looks great.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Looks great, Dan! I can't wait to get started on mine.
George
-
Looking very good indeed! Now the fun can start - the fuselage lozenge....
Ian
-
Like the others have said, Looking great!
RAGIII
-
You are doing an excellent job on the wings Dan, looking forward to seeing more.
Des.
-
Very great work. Looks better and better Dan.
Martin
-
Engines are on and the geometry is good enough for me ::) It actually looks really cool up close.
It's amazing when you look at pictures and try to figure out how the struts attach, it's all very confusing. But when you actually start building them, cutting them to length and fitting, everything fits, makes complete sense and is incredibly strong.
This is why I like scratch building and doing vacs...you have to figure it out and learn so much along the way. ;)
Man, I'm enjoying this build. I'll only need to tweak the distance between the planes by cutting a tad off the cabanes...but this is coming along extremely well.
Thanks for looking,
Dan
-
Exellent work and update, Dan.
Martin
-
Wow, Dan! truly gorgeous work! Unbelievable that this is 1/72 scale and a vac, to boot! Brilliant!
Cheers,
Bud
-
Thanks, Martin and Bud! Tonight I'll test fit the top wing and start painting the interior. I think, for the exterior, it's going to be based on the test build you see on the WNW page...green with purple and dark green. That will look cool next to my light blue Gotha and the lozenged Staaken ;D
More soon and thanks for looking and commenting.
Dan
-
It really does look cool 8)If I was doing this I would try and find the one MVR flew on in his early days.Wonderful stuff Dan.
-
Wow, Dan! truly gorgeous work! Unbelievable that this is 1/72 scale and a vac, to boot! Brilliant!
Cheers,
Bud
Agreement from another Amigo!
RAGIII
-
Hi Dan!How do you manage to keep it so crisp and clean? My vacs are always smeared with glue along the seams and elsewhere...
lookin' forward to the paint job!
-
That really is some handsome craftsmanship, Dan.
-
I got a bit of painting done. I put a light blue bottom on, very light green overall and now I'm covering with my take on darker green and soon to be purple. I like the colors on the WNW site so I'm doing my interpretation of that scheme.
I also put the base color of a light green/gray in the interior prior to some brush work. More soon!
Dan
-
Awesome paintwork! Better with each update!
RAGIII
-
That looks great Dan!
-
Looking great, that scheme is certainly an eye-catching one.
Ian
-
That is spectacular! I think I've turned about that same shade of green with envy. Can't wait to see it with the purple on.
-Dan
-
Brilliant painting, Dan.
Martin
-
Thanks, everyone! It means a lot coming from you guys who make incredible machines.
I do think the purple will look nice. With some fading, bombs, little details and brush painting, it will come alive.
After the purple, I'll paint on my markings and then start the weathering.
Cheers to all,
West Front Dan :D
-
super nice paint work on a nice airframe, one of the only 2 engine great war craft that i like and want to build. although mine will be 1/48.
-
I do not know where I have been but I have only just caught up with this one. Are you SURE that is a vacuform? Those engines look incredible - and the wings are just amazing too. The paint scheme will really set this one off. No doubt about it Dan, you are the king of the vacuforms.
-
Here is the state of affairs. I found a nice color called "Napoleon Violet" from the Model Master Enamel range. Seems to be nice for this project. Based on the WNW pictures, it seems really close. My camo isn't as nice, but it looks pretty cool in 1/72nd. Some weathering will bring it all together!
Next will be the markings. I think I'll paint them on unless I can find some decals in the spares box!
Thanks for taking a peak... ;)
Dan
-
She looks fantastic, Dan! I think you nailed this scheme.
Cheers,
Bud
-
That looks brilliant Dan, the colours look excellent to me.
Des.
-
What a very great painting. ;D
Martin
-
Looking absolutely brilliant. Very fine camo.
-
That is one pretty bomber! Superb! Bravo!
-
Beautiful work on the camo scheme! Looks awesome!
RAGIII
-
Wait, I thought that war was fought in black and white? ;) Gorgeous paint, that's going to look fantastic when the engines and everything else are painted.
-East Front Dan
-
This one is definitely going to stand out on the shelf - very nice!
Ian
-
Thanks, Everyone... :D
I sourced out some decals and found a numeral "11" which is just to liven up the markings a bit. Since this isn't any particular plane, I think I'm safe with this scheme... ;)
I'll work on the interior, engines and start painting struts soon!
Cheers,
Dan
-
It is really coming together now! The markings look terrific!
RAGIII
-
looks quite nice. how would you rate the classic plane brand? i was thinking of buying a few
-
What a great build! I've just gone through the thread and I'm very impressed. I love the scheme you've chosen.
-
She's looking spectacular Dan, the decals are perfect.
Des.
-
Fantastic work Dan.
Martin
-
I somehow missed this until now, Dan; what an absolute beauty! The colours are spectacular, as is the construction detail, great work!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Thanks, Everyone! Please excuse my tardy answer...I just got back from a medical and dental Global Brigade in Panama with several of my students. So I've been out of the loop in very rural Panama!
Albi: I like the Classic Planes kits. They are generally good in fit (two sides are the same size etc.) and surface detail is good. They are not as nice as Sierra kits but dang close. The only Classic that was a bit dodgy was the Staaken transport as the surface detail was pretty rough. I suspect this was either due to old molds or it was an early endeavor? I have a DFW from them that is delicate and looks great. This current AEG has some surface mold issues...almost like bubbles but I've sanded them out and it's going to be ok.
Tomorrow, I'll work more on the old girl. I must say...I missed my hobby bench! ::)
Cheers,
Dan
-
Wow! Dan you are really out-doing yourself with the AEG! Your
paint work is first-rate. Excellent choice of colours. Fantastic work,
my friend. :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
All,
I got some detail painting done as well as rib tapes and some weathering. I'll do a bit of rigging and add cockpit edging, exhausts and then...put on the top wing!

As amazing as it seems, I agree 100% with Bud ! Beautiful work all around!
RAGIII
-
All,
Thanks for the encouraging words. This guy is really coming along now.
I did a bit of work including making exhausts, cockpit edging, a bit of rigging and finally put on the top wing with the accompanying circus of struts. It's all fine and strong as the proverbial ox. What a machine this must have been.

RAGIII

Vacform at its best!!! Stunning Dan!Good luck with all that rigging

Hard to believe that's a vac Kit, Dan, you are doing a superb job on it. It's going to be absolutely striking when complete.
Cheers,

Very wonderful update Dan.
Martin

She's looking fantastic, Dan. A real inspiration!
Ian

Thanks, Folks, for your helpful hints and encouragement. This guy is in the home stretch now!
Got this done today. All that's left is a few relaxing nights of rigging ;-)

Of course...lots of little things too but with the wings on, life is good! ;D ;D
Thanks for looking!
Dan

A spectacular looking model Dan, having the wings now show it's true size, I'm looking forward to seeing the rigging.
Des.

Fantastic work Dan.
Martin

You must be very proud of your build Dan,she looks spectacular! Bravo!

It looks wonderful.
Good luck with the rigging.

Really beautiful Dan.

Dan,
As always OUTSTANDING project my old friend.Your skill and craftsmanship clearly shines through.
Highest Regards,

-
Thanks, All...I got most of it rigged tonight and will finish the control wires etc. for a post tomorrow.
And...IS THAT YOU? GREGORY???!!!!??? :o :o :o
Great to see you back. I trust things are going well even if you aren't stuck into a kit yet. GREAT NEWS!
You made my day.
Cheers and thanks again,
Dan
-
Dan, the AEG is looking amazing! What will you be using for the rigging
material? She's certainly a stunner!
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
HI Ernie and thanks for the message!
I just finished rigging this morning and simply used EZ line. The wings are super strong as is with aluminum spars so the rigging really isn't functional. I'll post something later tonight as I still want to get the control surfaces rigged as well.
Cheers,
Dan
-
I'm really looking forward to seeing it with the rigging!
-Dan
-
Great paint job.
-
Well...here it is with all the wing and aileron rigging in place. All EZ elastic and super glue with accelerator. Did it all in one sitting as it goes pretty fast while my wife knits. Well...two nights ;)
I still need to rig the control lines for the tail and the landing gear, but the major rigging is over. It went very, very well.
I do like how these WWI types look once rigged! Not really done until then...
Thanks for looking...more detail to come.
Dan
-
Looking splendid Dan! Sounds like you and wifey live in a creative domestic bliss.
-
You're right, Dan. The rigging seems to add that little extra touch
that planes without lack. Congratulations on a superb build, my friend.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Superb rigging work Dan! Just makes an outstanding model look even better!
RAGIII
-
Very impressive! It's going to end up being a real stunner.
-Dan
-
Hi Dan,hope you dont think that i'm being to picky, but I would love to see this fantastic model photographed against a darker background to show the contrast of the colours of the plane.Hope you dont mind me saying this :)
-
A very impressive looking model Dan with excellent rigging.
Des.
-
Fantastic update, Dan! It is shaping into a spectacular model.
-
Thanks to you all for commenting. It means a lot and coming from this group of modellers...well...it means even more as I admire your work while roaming these pages.
Thumb! How dare you suggest I change my background...I'm outraged. (ha, ha). ;) ;)
I think that's a good idea. Since this model is coming along so well, I will need to photograph it using several backgrounds etc. to get the best effect.
In fact, since I'm no photographer, any tips are heartily encouraged!
More soon...and how about that great Taube winning a top WWI award at the USA Nats! It really looks cool from the photos.
Cheers,
Dan
-
Very great work to rigging, Dan.
Martin
-
Beautiful work Dan. Almost there now.....
Ian
-
It looks great.
Try photographing it against a complementary colored (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complementary_colors) background, Perhaps dark warm brown. That should make it pop!
-
Thanks Martin, Ian and Bo...
And thanks additionally, Bo, for suggesting a good color. I'll give it a shot!
Cheers,
Dan
-
Dan,
Excellent rigging my old friend.I love the camouflage scheme depicted .
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette

Hi Dan, I'm chomping at the bit to see this little beauty finished, any news?
-
Hey There, Thumbs...
It's so close. Really just details needed to be added and landing gear. Life has been busy as of late and other projects have necessarily come to the top! Soon!!!!
Thanks for the comment,
Dan
-
Love the Bison, you should post it!
-
Finally! I got to spend some time on this guy. I started adding the wheel axles and I slipped the wheels on so you can see the "sit" of the machine. I also built the two machine guns and mounts with scratch ammo mags and mounting hardware. The guns are spares from, I think, several Roden models.

Lots of little things to go, but she is on the fast track to being finished...
Cheers,
Dan

Horray!!!Three cheers for Dan!!!!Love the update, cant wait to see her finished.I love to see what you guys do with vacforms.Dan you should show your recent Bison,i'm sure it would be greatly admired.

She's gorgeous, Dan, and looks fantastic next to your Junkers!
Cheers,

Beautiful work Dan!
Warren

She looks a real pearl Dan, I really like the colours you have used for the camo, and it's a great photo showing it sitting next to the Junkers.
Des.

All,
I made prop guards for the front gunner out of a brass outline and the thin rungs are EZ-Line. They are not perfect (especially with cat fur caught in them! :-[ ), but look pretty nice. I also glued the wheels on, painted them a bit, painted the guns and now I need to look at the radiators and carve a couple of props.

Thanks for looking...Dan
P.S. Some folks wanted to see a vac I just finished. It's not WWI but it's a vac and it has lots of drag, wires, two wings and a Lewis for the gunner! Here are a couple of shots for those interested.

Great models, both of them. Your AEG shows clearly, there is definitely life beyond WNW kits range! And how spectacular this life can be!
And the other one - a lovely model of an ugly bird. Forgive me my question - what is it?

I agree with Przemol! Also about what is the second aircraft :o
RAGIII
-
Thanks, Guys...yup. It's dang ugly. It was called the Avro Bison and I think it was designed by the same fellow who made the Manchester/Lanc!
It was a ship-board observation plane that was first built in 1925 (my Dad's birth year!). The design specs must have been very specific and selected for something like this (Large fuselage to work in, high cockpit for carrier landings etc.) because it is really similar to another "looker" called the Blackburn Blackburn. Google it! ;)
Thanks again,
Dan

Thank you, Dan for the info. And the Blackburn-times-two is better known to me. It can only be compared with some French inter-war bombers... You can just check Amiot family...
-
I still think the Bison looks more like a Walrus with those exhausts sticking out underneath the nose - only the designer could have loved that one!

Very fine work to your builds, Dan.

The Bison looks great in all her ugly beauty,Bravo Dan.I believe that theres another Bison wandering about on the forum. ;)

Man, oh, man...just catching up here. What great work, Dan. Really delightful stuff all around. Personally I think the Bison is as ugly as the AEG is attractive (in its own way) but your work on both is inspiring.
Cheers from NYC,
Michael
They are not perfect (especially with cat fur caught in them! :-[ ),
Well...that's one way to strain a cat before cooking....I wish our local Korean restaurant was as considerate. Man...you think picking out fish bones is tough....
