Great beginning on that big scale. All can see the Details.

Nice work so far! Makes me want to start on mine... I like your brass replacement elevator frame -- the kit white metal parts are pretty atrocious imo....

Bo, since now we know you have a 1/16 D.Va in your stash... would you consider scaling up your Mercedes D.IIIa pieces to 1/16? You know every owner of this kit really NEEDS new engine parts. And new MGs, BTW

Oh Oh! now you've done it! :o ;)
The question is cutaway or not cutaway & with or without bearing shells? Tapped sparkplug holes? You know Bo won't take no half measures.

This last photo is off topic...it is 1/72 or 1/48 Austro/hungarian swirl camouflage.
I have no use for it any more..scale too small for me...maybe any takers free of charge..just needs a good home on a model fitted for the scale...
cheers..

I will post it to anywhere, just a PM.

Hello gentlemen,
Most impressive work.
Best regards.
Alain.
-
Looks like a fantastic build. I'm currently working on some bits and pieces for a 1/16th Camel waiting for the kit to arrive. I have the D.Va next on my list, so very interested in any PE/Shapeways bits that might come out of this build!

ladies and gents, thanks for the heads up. My work has been taking the better part of me, but now some time again to continue the build, alas will be slow...

Outstanding work on the rudder! Your tail surfaces are looking terrific!

You have made exceptional progress with this build UFAG, the tail assembly is brilliant as is the rudder and fin.

Now this is modelling...Nothing less than rebuilding the real thing just a little smaller. Will the control surfaces be movable? Is it intended to be a flyable model?

Ladies/gents...to avoid confusion...the 3 pics of the wing is from a former build ( hansa brandenburg DI ), the build of the albatros wing can also be seen on the site posted above. I just used the HB DI wing pics for test on posting several pics at once in one posting..again..sorry for confusion...

For those in the known ( eg ALBATROS1234 and Coyotemagic, way back from theaerodrome)..my builds take a very long time...talking a couple of years...so be aware of a slow progress..;-)
And again..a lot of very good builders on this site...a joy to look at.

Brilliant work!!! How many gallons can you put into that fueltank? :) And long time building only means more fun in doing so!!! ;)
Cheerio
Lukas

Your work on the tank is phenomenal as always for your builds!

Oh, man! That is a statement heard many times in my studio! LOL! I'll finish a piece and show it to my wife and she'll say, "How did you do THAT!!" and I'll respond, "I have no idea". Perhaps it's time I started taking notes.
This is really delightful to follow....keep up the good work!

Fantastic parts for your build.
Martin
-
First I have to say that you are doing an amazing job with this kit! I love what you've done with all the scratch built parts, and you've painted and weathered them beautifully. I would love to try something in 1/16 scale but I know I would go too nuts with the possibilities of detail and I would never finish! ;D
But I have some questions about this kit. It seems that at this large scale of 1/16 that Model Airways would be able to make the parts more accurate than the smaller scales, not less accurate. You are having to scratch build and redo most of the kit parts, at least most of the white metal parts. The laser cut wood seems good, for the most part. Maybe it's due to the age if the kit, I don't know when this kit was produced, but it seems that manufacturing processes have greatly improved, especially with white metal and resin. Am I completely off base, or do you feel like you are redoing a lot of the kit parts?
George
-
Virtually all the kit parts George...!! That is mostly the with metal casting,
They are way off and not worth being called a kit part. The wood in general is okay, with some exceptions..for me,it makes the kit a challenge...semi scratchbuilding and detailing a basic kit. This is not quite an OBB...cheers
-
yes i agree, i have looked at the model airways kits. it seems most of the wood for wings etc is nice, laser cut and well researched. it must be someone else who did the engine and white metal parts.they are kind of crude for as large as they are. i wonder why noone has made resin upgrades for these kits?they have been on the market since mid 90s right?
-
Yes indeed, the metal parts in this kit are absolutely atrocious...
Great work UFAG

Bo, you have already made some of these DVa parts for your Shapways store. It seems like it would be an easy thing to upscale them to 1/16. But does the larger size make the cost a bit too high?

George
Consider the parts to be about 3 to 4x as expensive compared to 1:32 -- I have actually made some scaled up parts, but merely scaling up the 1/32 parts leaves a lot of potential detail on the table, and so the models need to be revised.

Ah a work of art in progress ! Outstanding skill and craftsmanship.

I've made quite a few parts for the D.V/a in 1:32 available here : https://www.shapeways.com/shops/flugzeugwerke
Some parts that might be useful scaling up to 1:16 include Engine block (upper and lower halves), cylinders, magnetos (with separate magnets, timing cover, and advance plate), oil pump; T&B radiator (with individual fins), spinner, fuel control valve (the thingy behind the dashboard) --and there are a host of other parts that I would probably do for my build when I get to it someday...: spandau receivers, starting magnetos, engine timing gear, exhaust, etc...

Yes of course, -- just mentioning parts that I have already mastered in 1:32 that could be relatively quickly ported to 1:16. Also we need air pump, intake and exhaust manifolds, carbs, spark plugs... Basically the whole engine :) and the list goes on.

I don't know how I managed to miss so much of this amazing thread, Martin. I'm such a huge fan of your work that I must go back a read every post. Truly remarkable work, as always.
Cheers,

-
Thank you very much Bud..!! Nice to see all from previous forums back here..!!( theaerodrome..ect)
Do you or any other know what happend to the "greatwaraviation"site..??
@ Bo...checked shapeways...very remarkable, the possibilities with 3D printing..amazing...!!
I was already aware of the 3D printing, but have no idea (yet) how it works to set up a project and convert it to the 3D printer.
Our Dva fuel tank 1/32 vs 1/16 is almost a carbon copy, yours is very subtle with the 3D..
Aft gun mount..a start..will make 2, with different diameters tubing, to see which fits the scale best..

Nice work Martin, but note the actual MG mount was made from oval section tube... Jamo TVAL photo here... I think you can see...
-
Gents, after Bo rightly pointed me to the fact that the aft gun mount is oval tubing, I stressed out ;-) , scraped the gunmount project, took a beer and attended to other matters of life...
Okay, no kidding, some sort of wakeup call, I was becoming complacent, lacking in thourough research of the subject...
I started right away with creating oval tubing and soldering the lot, not to my satisfaction yet, needs some fine tuning and cleaning up.
So, no posting until I got it right..!!
But ( call it a diversion from the subject), I took some shots of my first semi scratch build from 20 years ago.
An Albatros C-III in 1/48 from Eduard.
I covered the fuselage with fine wood veneer, riveting with a pin.
First try at painting the wings for a linnen covering look alike.
The rigging is copper wire.
Prop hand carved.
Tail skid real wood.

The model has a little deformation, The left upper wing is bend, my bench lamp descended slowly to the wing while I was away, the heat did the rest.
So, no high G turn to blame, I think the wings would rather snap right of..!!

Really great little Albatros!
regarding the mg mount -- wasn't trying to make you feel bad, just thought you'd want to be aware that the kit part in this case is not a good guide...
press on!
-
Martin,
Wow what an awesome Albatros C.I my old friend. Isn't she one of your projects from the old Aerodrome days? It's hard to believe she based on the old Eduards kit and what a vast improvement too.
As for the gun mounts on the D.Va not to worry or stress my old friend. The problem has been identified and you are working on the correction, all is right with the world now. Like many of us we tend to be our own worst enemies at times. Until the next awesome update Keep Calm and Carry On .
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette
-
Thanks Bo & Gregory, no worries, I was really over amplifying my statement, no harm done what so ever...I am enjoying the build as much as I do enjoy y'all builds. And Bo...I wasn't feeling bad, its actually a compliment somebody following the details of the build.
Next post soon!
Thanks

Martin, that is remarkable, I have to watch this one! Pietro
-
most german hardware from 1916 on was painted greenish gray color like seen in the photo above posted by bo. the color to my eye is a mixture of rlm 02 and ww2 british interior grey/green. most metal fittings on german aircraft inside and outside was painted this color.
-
Thank you.
I saw them indeed in grayish and greenish..😊
I will try the color mix you suggest.
-
Excellent work Martin.
Des.
-
Martin -- Scott knows as much about this as I do. We have two survivor Albatros to look at (prior to restoration) plus a smattering of fragments to refer to, all of which suggest that TVAL nailed it or at least got pretty close with the greyish green. As Scott suggests by his color mix, it seems a bit greener than RLM 02. WNW calls for Tamiya XF76 (https://www.tamiyausa.com/articles/ln/72/XF-chart-10ml.pdf)
-
slow progress, but getting there.
And Tamiya XF76 it is for the interior metal fittings...
The MG I produced many years ago in 1/16, falls short in this model, mainly the front mounting..
I will have to scratchbuild 2 new sets of these, and the metal offerings from model airwaqys are no option at all, not even a part of..

UFAG, I encountered this problem years ago with 1/24 Black Knight Albatros DV5a vacu-form. The guns and the engine, for that matter, were not usable. So, I took a Tom's Model Work PE set had it enlarged to 1/24, had a PMT made and that's when I taught myself (with some help) to make my own photo-etch stuff. I think your guns are going to be beautiful. I'm watching You.

George
-
It is no photo-etch, it is no CAD/CAM, it is no 3D printing ( because I do not have them at my disposal), just plain handy work with the tools available to me.
So, the spandau is not perfect and it took me a loooooong time to build, but I think it is okay as it is.
Needs a second one to be build (&^^%$^**( ).
But not for now, will focus on an other part of the build.

Thanks all for the encouragement...!!
Now appreciate an opinion from you all about the following;
Attached photo of the right lower wing which I made 10 years ago.
It is now covered with lozenge "heat shrinking" linnen, custom made for me by Arizona Model Aircrafters .http://www.arizonamodels.com/
The decal sheet is kindly produced by Richard from Aviaticc, factory fresh lozenge.( on request made to 1/16th scale)
Personnaly I like the bright "new" colors of the decal sheet.
Opinions please..??!!
( the light and photo does not do justice to the colors shown, I should make a daylight photo...it is night here..!!)

I Love the Aviattic Lozenge! Use your usual skills and pre / post shade and it will be perfect. JMHO. The covering looks a little too subdued to me. Again JMHO,
RAGIII
thanks for input..!
I know how to pre/post shade on a painted surface, how to go around it with a decal..??
-
Aviattic is much better looking colorwise. I would change to that

Wonderful stuff Martin, I love the 1:1? fuel panel -- did you make this?
The front MGs mounts aren't quite right though -- check this picture:

AHA!! :D
-
thanks for reply Bo!
I am very aware of the engine mount not being quite true to Original, it is a compromise considering the materials I am working with ( and the materials not quite willing to work with me..)....and honestly...I got a little @#$%^&^ when trying to replicate the mount as it should be....so I left it a little bit in the middle...shame on me..:-)
-
Absolutely incredible work! No complaints from me re the engine mount as I don't normally model for God ;D
RAGIII
-
Thanx RAGIII...!
The fuel panel was produced for an 1/4 scale albatros from proctor, which I never completed and sold to an other enthousiast ( wing span over 2 meters, house too small..)
I produced the panel and kept it..

Of course I hadn't seen your next post with the mounts much closer to how they actually are. A fine compromise.
Anyway, it's wonderful stuff, I know what a pig this kit is (at least the metal bits)
fuel valve is great.
-
ps...the thingy aft of the fuel panel is still in "experimental"....hard to replicate from simple scratch..

Spendig weeks on replicating the spandau....now found this...!
I ordered them...see how my scratch stands out...

Make sure you get the kind WITHOUT the extended handles! Extended handle type not fitted to actual albatrossen.
p.s. I know what you mean -- I spent weeks modifying the WNW 1:32 Spandaus, then Costas put out his little gems which just blew what I did away.

I have missed most of this build until now... what a treat! Really beautiful work.

just for change of pace....something different.
The logenze on the wing is the "old" deal which I applied over 10 years ago.
The sheets with the upper and lower Logenze in 1/16th scale are kindly produced by Richard of AVIATTIC on special request.
The colours are factory fresh and more fibrant.
-
The decals are with white back, not translucent. A must, since I will apply the new decals OVER the old.
-
(http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn27/marlewlf/PICT2680_zps5ot6mmju.jpg)
-
Okay...will leave this to dry overnight.
Not easy to handle a big decal...!!
-
(http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn27/marlewlf/PICT2681_zpsqerq8t20.jpg)
-
for the lozenge pattern's on the wings, I use this book from Robert C. Mikesh on restoring the albatros.
The lozenge decals from aviattic are spot on...!!
-
I will use Future floor polish to settle and seal the decal.
-
Continuing to be an absolutely brilliant build and then some! Are you going to skin the whole fuselage?
RAGIII
yes, I do have the intention to cover the whole fuselage. I am fully aware that it is going to be a handfull to work it out and make it look descent...specifically around the lower wing root and tail...🤔

Wow... Just wow. :o

Thank you for revisiting your remarkable HB D.I, Martin. This remains one of my all time favorite models.
Cheers,
Bud

I am speechless…….. Words cannot properly describe the quality of that model - museum standard is as close as I can get.
Stephen.

Like Bud said, Thanks for re visiting your HBD1. A truly Magnificent build!

something like that me think...some fine tuning to go.
-
Me thinks this plane will be able to fly once you are done. Outstanding workmanship!!! :D
-
I sure remember when you were building that Hansa d.1 back then. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for updates and it's still one of my favorite types
-
Outstanding worksmanship! Brilliant tuning. Lovely to see, how it gets better and better.
Bye,

Mastermodelling at its best. Very impressing, how you build your 1/16 models. They look like 1/1 reconstructions.

Hello all. I have been off the radar for a while.
I am most certain my next question will have been posted somewhere in this forum, but can anyone give me an alternative to Photobucket...?
UFAG

Great news, Martin! Looking forward to your next update.
Cheers,

Okay, photo was supposed to be showing...I will continue the " how to "
-
Can`t wait to see the next update cause this is an extremely interesting subject and its execution.
-
^^ What he said. Watching the control column assembly alone is inspiring stuff!
-
Okay....HELP...!! How to post pics from flicker to forum...??
-
Glad to see you back on this project; it is one of my favourites here on the Forum, so inspirational and so much information. I can't help you with Flickr but can recommend Imgur and send you a link if you are interested, it's free and very easy to use.
Cheers,
Lance
-
Lance, please do send the link, highly appreciated, either by posting here or a PM.
Thanks again...!!

This worked for me, and I'm "IT challenged" to say the very least. Actually composed by my Nephew and provided by fellow Forum Member Chris Johnson.

Wow, glad to see you back on the air with this build. Simply amazing work. Pictures look fine that size if Des has no objection. ;D
-
Amazing work as usual ufag
-
That6 is an amazing piece of mini-engineering. The giant hand really helps the observer to appreciate the size of what you are doing.
Stephen.

Continuing to be an INCREDIBLE build! I hope to use some of your ideas, although not to the extent you go, for my future Albatros Builds.

I am continually amazed at the high level of engineering skills you are displaying with this build, the control column and accessories is an absolute work of art and is a model in its own right, looking forward to seing more updates soon.
Des.
Changes to the settings on the forum now see all photos posted at 800 x 800 unless the original photo is a smaller size.

I can only agree with all the words above. This is excellent modelling on a very high level. I expect that many museums will beg for being allowed to show that Albatros.

Dear forum members,
Some time things in life do happen, some times recoverable, some times it is not.
In this specific case, it is unrecoverable.
During a move from one room to another ( stairs ), despite carefull handling, the assembly had a mind of its own and went down the stairs ending up in a crashed wreck...!! In a long past, I had havoc before with a model ( WWII Shiden George)...but that model was recoverable.
The Albatros Dva unfortunately is not. I have worked on the model for the last 15 years with pauses in between, after all that work, it is a little bit hard to comprehend. I am not in shambles though...will clean up the working place and give my thoughts on the next project..enough to go for. In the mean time, I will follow your fantastic builds.
I'll be back.
Martin
-
!
-
Hi Martin,
if you are giving up on this, will you be selling on the crashed kit?
Richard
-
Sorry Richard, if there was any hope to fix the lot, I would have done so.
All is already in the thrash bin. All I saved is the engine and the hand carved prop...just to rember.
-
Then there is still hope.
Time to park this and let it bounce around your mind for a while
After all, there may be another use for that engine...

Really terrible news, what a tragic end to such a beautiful model, luckily the engine and prop survived the crash.
Des.
-
Really pitty, I hope some scratched small parts like switches and fuel taps have survived too?
The engine and the air srew are looking beautiful, would be a nice addition to my 1/16 Austro Daimler (http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=8568.0).
Looking forward to your next project!
Cheers,

Looks like a bounce back has already started
Can't keep a good modeller down
Richard

Well Martin, as far as Modelling News that's about as bad as it gets; I've been entranced with this Build since the beginning here and I'm very sorry for your misfortune. I commend you for your positive attitude in the midst of this set back, and I look forward to the next project!
Cheers,
Lance

Since joining this forum I have looked at your work in awe and silence at your Dva (who the hell am I to comment on such brilliant work?). This is very sad news but with your skills and commitment I'm sure there is something even better to come.
Best wishes,
Alistair

I am very sorry to hear all this. 15 years of modelling... I even cannot find the words for consolation. But I do hope you are still going to amaze us all with your next project.
