Title: WNW Airco DH2 6011, 24 Sqn. C Flight 2 Lt. C. Kerr
Post by: lcarroll on February 17, 2015, 12:57:26 PM
I've updated the title of this Build which started as Major Lanoe Hawker's #5964. I switched schemes early on to allow for the
PC 10 and grey fuselage I wanted to model. She's finally, after a week of rigging and some final touch-ups and additions, in the display case.
The verdict, lovely Model, very well engineered , a bit of a challenge on the rigging side of the equation, and definitely a beautiful model to add to your collection. I used Aviattic's new fabric decals for both the PC10 and CDL portions. Great product however I believe I need more experience to handle the top/bottom joins with better results, but I would and will use it again. I also encountered some difficulties with the A/M Taurus Engine I hoped to install in this Build; in the end a hybrid of the Kit Engine and the Taurus product got installed as some of the latter's tiny parts proved beyond my old and ever stiffening fat fingers ability!
She has a few "warts", I'd like to build a second one someday avoiding all the traps I fell into as the subject is a big favorite of mine. Here's the final version photos.........

Now it's time for a change of pace; I'm going to work on a Gift for my Brother in Law, a 1:350 Scale Canadian Corvette that his Father spent 4 years of WWII serving in during the Battle of the Atlantic. Now there's something completely different, then it's into the Group Build with both feet! More to follow on the "Time to Relax" board.
Cheers,
Lance

My goodness, is she ever a beauty, Lance!  The Aviattic fabric looks fantastic, your hybrid engine is a little gem, the rigging is magnificent and your cockpit, brilliant.  Superb work all 'round, buddy!

Wonderful.

A model to be proud of. Frankly, I don't see any warts, but we are our own worst critics sometimes. You have inspired me to get a DH-2 from Wingnut Wings and follow along.  Well done!

Each model you produce surpasses the last. Not bad for a bloke with fat fingers!

Well done!

Superb Lance, a real stunner. The finish on this model is excellent with just the right amount of weathering, the rigging turned out brilliant and the work you did on the cockpit is beautiful, well done and thank you for your very helpful build log.

Hi Lance,

Wonderful and amazing build my friend. It is an excellent kit, but it takes a tremendous modeler to turn it into such a beauty. The finish is of high standard and the rigging is showing your craftmanship even more. Many congratulations!

Kind regards
Patrick

Hi Lance,

I've been following your build closely and result speaks for itself!!! She is gorgeous!!! Luckily DH2 is waiting for me in my Australian stash so I can slowly start dreaming/planning my future build of this wonderful and interesting aircraft :) I will surely recall this thread when I build my one :)

Degree of Difficulty: 10.
Degree of Frustration: 10
Degree of Excellence: 10

Absolutely superb Lance! While you may think that there are a few warts, what I see is an aircraft model that boasts subtle weathering effects indicative of a hard service life on the Western Front. You couldn't have done it any better my friend. You hit this one out of the park!

Cheers,

Chris

And it won't just encourage us re the WNW kit, I have a Roden DH2 in the stash, and reading this back again will definitely help

Thank you so much, Gents. Your comments are greatly enjoyed and appreciated, to say nothing of the confidence boost they provide. I forgot to mention in my Build Log that the Rigging Tutorial on Bob's Website is an outstanding aid in finishing this little beast, not 100% complete, but darned close!
Cheers,

As has been said to me, we are our own worse critics as we know where the flaws are..........

I can't see the flaws either.

Thank you all, my camera seems to have hidden some of the faults that I know are there rather well. I've learned a lot from being a member here and sharing, learning, and enjoying other's results brings a lot of pleasure to the Hobby for me. It doesn't get much better then positive and complimentary feedback from others whose work you are in awe of! :)

Lance

Warts and all, I love it (although i fail to see the impact from Aviattic's linen decals).

Please don't wait too long for your second DH2 - otherwise you might have forgotten all the traps you mentioned  8)

Dan, Gary, Naimbs and Stefan, thank you for the comments. Naimbs, if you take a look on the Bob`s Buckles Site under Tricks the rigging tutorial by Tim West is there and really makes a lot of sense by breaking the task into many stages. You still need to look at  reference photos but it isn`t as hard as it appears.

That is superb.
I got some photos of Hawkers medals at Hendon last week. I'm still up in York, but today we went to the royal armouries in Leeds, where they had in a case a Lewis just like this. I have the Gaspatch ones at home, with the casings bag. The corrugations in the bag are made by a wire frame, but it's on the outside, so each corrugation has a black metal wire along it. I'll post the pics next week.

Dave, Thanks, and I really would like to see the photos. that's a Gas Patch on this Build, and they really provide an outstanding product! I thought wire frame, but assumed the inside of the bag.
Cheers,
Lance

She's a real beauty Lance.

If mine (if I ever get back to it) turned out as nice I'd be well proud. Like we all know, you the artist knows the flaws others don't see. Overall she is an impressive piece of work and the only thing I might suggest is to dirty down the rocker assemblies on the engine. IMHO that is and only a thought. But you know me and grimy engines.  :D

A weath of info for anyone else attempting this kitset too.

Thanks Keith, I like your suggestion regarding the rocker assemblies, I missed that and I too prefer a bit of grime. I see some Winsor-Newton "Lampblack" in my future, probably in the next 48 hours!

Stunning model Lance, have gone over the pics many times most of them I have enlarged/zoomed in on.
This will be the WNW kit that i'm having for my birthday it will also be my first delve into the WNW kit market.
Can you give me a rough estimate as to how long it took you to do the rigging

Roy,
I'm an extremely slow Builder so don't take this as a hard fact concerning how long it will take you. I did a few hours a day for 6-7 days as near as I can recall. Add a few days to install the eyelets, (I think there were over 100) It's very difficult to put a number on as I did eyelets, attached the bulk of the "wires" to the lower wing and fuselage, then mounted the upper wing and went back to rigging. Have you checked out the rigging article on Bob's Buckles Website?
Cheers,
Lance

cheers for that Lance, I have spent ages trying to choose a kit but decided that as far as rigging goes the larger the amount the better.

Roy,
I originally decided on the DH.2 as a "work up" to the FE.2b, in retrospect I'm not so sure I didn't get it backwards! If it's lots of rigging in a 1;32 Kit you are looking for I'd say both fit the bill, and you absolutely can't go wrong with Wingnut Wings. I haven't done the "Fee", but it looks to be just as great a Kit as the DH.2.
Cheers,
Lance

The Fee's wingspan is a little too large for me to handle as far as stowage/display goes at the moment.
Both kits have their merits and maybe one day I will be able to do the Fee
The step by step guide on Bob's buckles was very informative

Sorry to weigh in so late, Lance....

I have to say this is really a lovely build. So crisp! This has always been one of my favorite planes...all the way back to the Revell 1/72 kit. I look forward to getting to my WnW kit and hope I do half as well as you've done.

Bravo!

Thank You Michael, a compliment from a true artist of the genre is always most welcome. I happened on your Facebook Page through a casual Model friends page, Tom Morgan this morning and was admiring your Art Work displays; little wonder you don't feel ready to put your feet up yet, lovely work! (The Pup looked pretty impressive there too!)
Looks like you folks get the prize for snow accumulation this year!
