Another piece recently completed.
Strike Them From Above
17" x 22"
oil on linen
Fokker DVII's of Jasta 23. In the foreground we see Lt. Hans Müller with his personal emblem of a white swan on a lake. Above and behind him is Lt. Hubert Eder with his bulldog emblem. Below and diving towards the enemy is Lt. Heinrich Seywald in his white DVII. The scene is backlit which allows us to see the translucency of the 4-color lozenge fabric and some of the underlying structure of the DVIIs. Those areas which are painted, such as the personal emblems, squadron markings and national insignias are opaque and don't allow sunlight through.

Russell,
As always, your work is fantastic. Just wish I had the wall space to buy one of each!

Lovely work, Russell. I really like way you have captured the effect of backlighting on Müller's aircraft.
Best wishes
