Hello Al,
Is anyone else off to Telford on the 8th and 9th November?
I'm already compiling a shopping list. This will include the new Eduard SS D.III, various books I'm after, including some Datafiles, together with things from friends at AVIATTIC, Pheon and Gaspatch with a reserve fund for any surprise releases.
Best wishes
Nigel
-
Nigel, You lucky Devil you! Don't forget to keep enough aside to get back home afterwards, could be a long walk if you completely lose control of your financial resources! ;)
Cheers,
Lance
-
Sorry to say I've been grounded for that weekend, I even had to cancel my trade stand The Base 2B on account that my 65 Birthday falls on that weekend and I'm not aloud to leave home >:( All I can say it had better be the best surprise party ever or my family will never hear the end of it . It should be one of the best model shows this year, so to all who able to go have a great time .
Gordon
-
I'll be there!
-
I'm wondering whether or not I should go. I've already got a pile of 14 kits to build - do I need to go to a show where I'll be tempted to buy more? ???
-
This is one show I would dearly love to attend, but it is a bit more than a hop - skip and jump from my place :(
Des.
-
Same for me, but as compensation I have the first TVAL flying weekend for the season coming up on 29th and 30th November. I hope someone will take some photos and give us a show report?
-
I agree with Jamo, I hope someone takes a camera to let us poor souls who can't attend an insight into what's new.
Des.
-
I'll take a camera and try and get a few photos. As I'm not returning to France until the following Monday evening it could be a day or two before I can post anything.
Best wishes
Nigel
-
Good on you Nigel :)
-
Thank you Nigel, I looking forward to seeing the results of the show.

COUNTING THE DAYS DOWN ;D
Lots to do, over the two days, in fact too much.
will be helping out with the great war sig over the weekend plus my own club the Staffordshire Moorlands.

Nigel, we who are unable to get to the show are
very grateful for your kind offer of the pictures.
Looking forward to seeing them. :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)

I'll be at Telford Saturday and Sunday morning helping out on a trader stand. I'll will hopefully be able to get round the show with the camera at some point and will post up any relevant photos when I get back home.
On the Monday we are going to the Tower of London to see the poppies so it will be later in the week before the photos get sorted, posted etc. We are taking the roundabout route home.....
Peter

One question... Do you need to be a member of the society to attend, or is it open to anyone?
-
Hi Squiffy
Anyone can attend. IPMS members get free entryand can go in an hour earlier than non-members. It really is a most impressive show. Check out the Scalemodelworld site for lots of information about it.
Best wishes

Just printing the final bits and pieces then loading the car ready to catch the ferry from Le Havre 5pm this evening. Last minute rush but not as bad as in previous years - we must be getting better or have I forgotten something????
As always, excitedly looking forward to the highlight of our WWI modelling year and like Richard I wish it went on all week!
We are next door to Richard, Amanda and Harry from Aviattic in Hall 1, next to the Airfix Take and Make stand, on the way to the exit for the competition entries. Looking forward to seeing our old friends and meeting some new ones!
If I get a chance I'll take some snaps.

I'll be there with elan13 miniatures, in hall 2 with Model Display Products. It would be lovely to say hello to members.

Thanks, Nigel. I think I'll go then. I'm after some more figures from WD models for my diorama, some Aviattic lozenge for a Hannover I have to build and... well, it can't hurt to buy more kits, can it? ;)
-
I'm sure you'll enjoy it, Squiffy. Maybe see you there.

I went, I saw, I bought some stuff. I also got rather tipsy, which was a novelty for a model show.
I was looking at one of the trade stands, which I think was being run by some Czech chap, and pondering whether or not to buy a Roden Zeppelin Staaken R.VI... Then along comes someone whom I assume was a friend of the proprietor, carrying the biggest hip-flask I've ever seen and he offers me a shot of what he said was home-made 60% proof plum brandy.
It would have been rude to refuse so I knocked it back and then along comes a Polish fellow with a bottle of Polish home-made plum brandy and offers me one...
I accepted, and knocked it back, only in the name of good international relations, you understand? ;D ;)
I bought the Zep and fortunately I didn't have to drive myself home!
-
Heck of a deal Squiffy. Got to go to the BIG Show, look and shop around, meet some good Folks and free drinks in the bargain. That's my kind of event! ;) I'm jealous! :o
Cheers,

I have to agree, sounds like my kind of place and event 8) I think I will add Telford to my Bucket List!

Did anyone else who went take any photos?
I got but two on my very poor Blackberry phone. They show only a part of a fantastic mainly 72nd scale collection of WW1 aeroplanes. The chap who owned them is an even faster builder than I am. He said that he'd built the Zeppelin Staaken in a week!
I'd already bought my kit before I saw this one and until I saw this I didn't appreciate how huge it is. It dwarfs the Gotha just below and to the left of it...

I've only just got back home from Telford and have yet to even review the photos I took, but I hope to be posting numbers of them tomorrow.

Yes, pleeeeaaase.

Well, I got back late yesterday with a small flight cabin case heavy with goodies. Telford is a huge exhibition, spread over three large halls. Apart from scores of trade stands and displays, there are 95 separate competition classes alone. I took lots of photos. Do please forgive the very variable quality, it wasn’t easy with my little snapper camera and you couldn't get behind most of the WWI aircraft entries, but I’ll upload as many as are reasonable and will do so in five tranches: Competition entries 1 and 2; Displays; Trade friends; and Other things I spotted.
COMPETITION ENTRIES 1 (these are presented in Competition Class order. Do bear in mind that I saw the exhibits after the judging and some may have been removed. Others were on other display stands around the exxibition.),
Class 11: 1/71 up to 1/48 Standard kit (prop) saw this Gold Medal winning Roden Brisfit.

Class 28: Aircraft up to 1918 – 1/72 scale and smaller, standard kit, any source detailed, any source converted, vacformed, scratch built, super detailed brought various entries. Outside the competition area there were well over a hundred Great War aircraft on display around the show and as you’ll see from one of the labels some of these featured in the competition too.

Hello Again.
After a bite to eat it’s on to COMPETITION ENTRIES 2 and how one of these did not achieve best in show defeats me, but it must have been close. Again apologies for the quality of some of the photos.
Class 30: Aircraft up to 1918 – 1/47 scale and larger, standard kit, any source detailed, any source converted, vacformed, scratch built, saw some familiar friends and a truly outstanding scratchbuild.
Commended was this Fokker D.VII (OAK)

The card detailing the entry finished with a plea to look under the wings since the builder felt this to be the best aspect of the model. It was difficult to photograph but the opacity of the clear doped linen has been captured beautifully.

In case you’re wondering what became Senior National Champion, in effect, best of show overall, it was this superb piece of work, which unfortunately had to be photographed inside its display case

So that’s it for the competition entries that I saw. I’m sure you’ll recognise some of the entries and I hope that forum members whose models I’ve shown will forgive the poor quality of the photos and my failure to accredit work to named individuals.
In the next posting, I’ll focus on individual displays in the main halls.
Best wishes

Thanks Bob.

Thanks very much Nigel for all the effort you have gone to in taking and posting the photos, it is great to see so many WW1 aircraft represented and all are tremendous models, well done to all the owners of those magnificent models.

Nigel,
Just discovered your photos. Thanks for the time and effort. Some Lovely builds there!

Thank you for sharing your photos. Stunning entries into the competition (but I find it a bit strange that some models win heaps of prizes, while others, equally fine builds, win nothing at all).

Great and much appreciated effort on your part Nigel! What a tremendous display of beautiful Models, many Thanks for bringing this to us unfortunates who cannot be there. My "Bucket List" grows longer! ;)

Hello Nigel,
first, nice to meet you at the show.
Second, The Lohner did NOT win best aircraft and was not in the final judging for Best in show.
Why, well I have inside info that is of a very high standard who stated that the aircraft judges had found a mistake of some kind.
We are talking nit picking, so this opened up the field to all those other lovely WW1 aircraft but alas they also did not get it.
The winner was a yellow modern type glider, go figure. :'(
Third , how many sheets of decal did you buy from Aviattics, I had six sheets all stunning quality. Plus I hit Gaspatch, turnbuckle heaven or what.

Hi Roy
It was great to meet you too and I have some photos to post of the wonderful Great War SIG display you worked on.
Thanks for the heads up on my error. I mis-read the card adjacent to the Lohner and failed to spot who had awarded it and have corrected my posting. I'd be interested to know what mistake the judges found, not least since it was awarded the Cross and Cockade Trophy.
I bought four of the superb AVIATTIC linen finish sheets, having already accumulated numerous others over time. I can't wait to try them out, but am feeling a bit nervous. When was it ever possible not to stop and marvel at and then buy from the Gaspatch stand?
Best wishes

The last two postings tried to provide a photographic record of most of the Competition entries of direct interest to us and, in a change of plan, I’ve already posted trade news and other things of interest in the What’s New thread. I’d like to turn now to an encouragingly large number of Great War aircraft put on display by IPMS Branches and Special Interest Groups (SIGs). I haven’t tried to capture them all and given the number of photos I’ll split this over several postings.
If I have misattributed anything please accept my apologies.
IPMS West Glamorgan had a 1/32 Sopwith Triplane and a Gotha G.IV on display

Perhaps the most extraordinary and impressive single display was that put on by The Great War Special Interest Group. Before focusing on some of the individual gems on display, I hope the following photos give an overall flavour of things, even if it proved too much for my photographic skills.

I think those of us with a love of Great War aviation and models have been spoiled rotten at Telford this year. Not only are there superb products to support our labours but also there seems to have been many models for us to admire. Perhaps the latter reflects the centennial commemorations and may not be repeated at this level next year, but who knows and maybe we’ll be seen less as a small niche interest.
To finish with here are some shots of individual gems from the many on that Great War SIG display that I was able to get to photograph.

Nigel, these are really wonderful......thanks for posting for those of us who were unable to make it. The shots are really excellent.
I'd like to think that as this is just the beginning of the Centenary, hopefully we will see interest continue to grow over the next four years. Just seeing these beautiful models of beautiful planes has certainly stoked my boiler...which I thought was already close to full pressure.
Cheers from this side of the Pond,
Michael

Nigel,
I have to say again, Thank You for your efforts on this; it's very enjoyable and in no small measure inspiring to see the incredible variety and quality of submissions if only from a distance. I also enjoyed seeing photos of some of our great supporters from the After Market Sector; as we so often say on the Your Introduction Thread, it's nice to put a face to a name.
Great coverage, I'm sure everyone here has enjoyed it as much as I.
Cheers,
Lance

Thank you Nigel for posting these wonderful photos, I have thoroughly enjoyed going through them, more than once, some inceredible builds among the enormous display.

Great photos, Nigel! Thanks for posting. Wish I'd been there.

Thanks Nigel, what a show!!
Excellent displays and appears to be very well organised.
Looks like WW1 modelling in all its forms does have a pretty sizeable cohort besides those in our great forum - good to see. Lets hope it isn't a flash in the pan so to speak.
Once again thanks for your photo's, etc in the various threads, great stuff ;)

Thanks Nigel for sharing this huge quantity of pictures, I was looking at them as a kid in front of a toy shop...
But I was looking at them thinking to those who actually were in those machines putting their lives at stake for an ideal of freedom...

And that is a very important and appropriate reminder. Thank you Antonio.
