Title: Not the best news, but...

...WnW has just listed the Hansa-Brandenburg W.29 as "SOLD OUT"!  :(

I saw that last week. I can only hope they will re-release it. I would think that if they do release it again, it will be one of those special edition kits with a lot of extras and a higher price. I'm just praying that their Gotha does not sellout anytime soon as I still want one.

I'm quite surprised that this is the first kit to be sold out. I wonder if it had a smaller production run as I wouldn't think that it would hold a candle to other kits such as the Albatros D.V in terms of popularity.

Cheers,

Chris

To be honest, I´m not that surprised because 1) It´s a model that doesn´t require much rigging and therefore it can be much more attractive to new WWI modelers,  and 2) It has the charm of a seaplane  ;).
But I do fear that we´ll see much more WnW "Sold Out" tags in the future...  :(

I echo what Jose has said.

It may be sad news for anyone wanting one of these kits but it would be good news for Wingnuts.

That's a right royal pain....I was tossing up between the W.29 and the J.1 as my first WNW kit at some time in the future. Didn't really occur to me that they might be limited runs :(

Does anybody know if they intend to have limited runs? I would've thought they'd have another production run due to their seeming great success??

Andrew

p.s. - not in a position to develop a stash due to severe space limitations atm >:(

Call me a cynic, but what better way of boosting the sales of their other kits? The economy is a bit slow, sales might be a bit flat, why not create a bit of panic buying by suddenly frightening the market with the prospect of the other kits selling out too?

I should point out that that is exactly what I did - I demolished my credit card by buying six kits just in case.   :-\

   Red Baron,
You're not being a cynic at all my friend.Your idea makes very good business moxy.

I've read elsewhere that WNW does indeed intend to re-release the W.29 with crew figures and a 200 bit pe set as a special edition kit.

Once I asked Dave Johnson (from WnW) about this (and upon hearing about the special editions for the first time), and he told me, or at least it was what I understood at the time, that once the regular editions sold out, they would only be made available back again, as special editions. I guess we´ll just have to wait and see what the future holds...
Also, this is something that I was expecting for a long time, as they always said that ALL WnW models were limited editions. I might say though, that I was expecting the first "Sold Out" model to be one of their first ones, and not one released last year...

The hoarding mentality did annoy me initially as I wanted to build one of these and due to the similarity of schemes I'm only ever going to build one, I couldn't see anyone ever building 4, but without the hoarders we wouldn't get the choice we are getting now so a double edged sword.

I must admit i was surprised to see it sold out so soon. Special editions could be years away considering that the D.vii was promised for 2010.

You do know tomorrow WNW will announce a whole raft of new kits now.

There's no way one run of any of these kits will cover the overall production costs. It'll be back and if its an S/E edition then we dont go out and buy the $30-$40 after market....

Well a large carton arrived today whilst I was at work - my Wife just put it in the corner and hasn't mentioned it. I am in serious trouble  ;D

Hey Red Baron, my wife says you better get the blanket ready and be prepared to sleep on the couch...Anyway, at least you got some kits, especially the Gotha.

This is what I was wondering as well Chris.

Someone over at Hyperscale contacted Dave Johnson and reading between the lines there were a number of other kits with limited stock as well so buy, buy, buy.

Apparently the w-29 will never have a standard production run again.  :(

Unfortunately he wouldn't say which ones.

I haven't told my Wife - I'm expecting a rather less than favourable reaction when the courier arrives! ... I ended up buying a J.1, an LVG,a D.IIIa, D.V, DVa, and a Gotha.

Aw, I just couldn't resist adding up the cost of all of those kits. I'd definitely be keeping a low profile but once she sees the credit card charge, that might be impossible.  ;D

Cheers,

Chris

Is this just not some clever marketing by WNW?

I mean, the thought that any model will "sell out" will sway many buyers.

In fact, I'm 100% certain - I just ordered the Gotha! $139 plus a chance that Customs will slap another £25 on top.

Mad - had the "sold out" sign not made a showing, I'd have waited, but as it is this is kit #63 for the stash, all pre 1946 1/32.

“Tis not as wide as a church door nor as deep as a well, but twill serve”.  :-X

Ah, the sweet mystery of the Wingnut strategy. I thank them as I know all do that love this part of aviation history and any treats they toss our way are gratefully received.  ;D

Buck-up lads it ain’t over till it’s over.  ;)

I feel your collective pain. I've been mulling over getting a new motorcycle for a while now, finally decided to go for it, called in at my local bike showroom this morning with credit card in hand.  You can imagine how surprised I was to hear Vincent stopped making motorcycles ages ago! Who'd have thought it? Ah well, instead of the Black Shadow I've been dreaming about for so long, I'll have to decide if I will get a Hesketh or a Norton Rotary instead. Decisions, decisions. I'll just have a little ponder before I make my mind up......

Personally, I think that if it was a marketing ploy, WnW would only have to add a notice that a certain kit was in short supply, but I haven't seen that yet. Frankly, I'd prefer that they did alert us to low stock items rather than just post that the kit is no longer available.

Whatever the case, I'm not taking a chance, so I ordered their Pfalz and Albatros D.Va because I don't have either of them.

Cheers,

Chris

I originally bought the J1 and LVG because I thought they were cool, and "if WNW is a flash in the pan" I'll have two cool WW1 kits. While I've known that WNW kits are all "limited" I figured the Albies to run out first. I have a W29, but thought to buy another. Various things kept me from that. I do like the fact that WNW keeps the status of kits under wraps, which keeps potential runs on kits from happening. I already see people spending more on WN kits, PLUS shipping, on e bay. While ebay is only an indicator of potential value (1/32 Revell Mirage) I am surprised to watch people buy a kit for 100 dollars+ shipping, when they can spend 5 more minutes, and get the kit at WN terms; they do it though.
Q: When WN releases the DVII, will they do a larger production run, or will people feel they need to buy more now, just in case?

While you´re there (eBay), take a look at some Windsock Datafile auctions... some of the titles end up being sold at a much higher price, than the price being asked by Albatros at their website...   :o :o :o :o

Thanks to this thread, I just ordered a Roland D.VIa, and this after ordering a Pfalz D.XII last week.  :)

Just for fun, we should start a pool as to which will be the next WNW kit to sell out.  ;)

Cheers,
Eric
