Title: "Petite Jojo" S.E.5a USAS 25th Aero Sqd. Germany 1919
Post by: rhwinter on September 21, 2014, 09:03:21 PM
Hi all,

I would like to make a 1:32th scale model of this particular S.E.5a, photographed late in April 1919 at the "3rd Army Carnival" at Coblenz (Koblenz), Germany.
What can you recommend: Use the WnW S.E.5a, the Roden Viper engine and some aftermarket bits and pieces (e.g. MasterCasters' radiator and prop)? Or start with Roden's Viper-powered S.E.5a? Any other recommendation? Or should I better forget the idea?

And: Has anyone any more information on that particular plane and the event? Which literature do you recommend for that build?

Thank you in advance !

Richard

(Hope the pic Shows..)

Possibly...  For myself, I can't comment on the WNW kit, but I enjoyed building the Roden Viper kit, which I did as one of Mannock's machines - there are pictures of it somewhere down in the Completed Models section FWIW.
I've just had a look at the MasterCasters site. Interesting, especially the Nieuport 17 cockpit, but I digress. To my eyes, the SE5a radiator looks slightly more detailed than the Roden one, but not by so much that I personally would have bought it.
To me, buying the WNW kit and then turning it into a Viper machine sounds an expensive and messy way of going about things, but modellers have done madder things than that. You're talking to someone who bought the Special Hobby Morane N in the hope of cannibalising it for a few bits and pieces for a Morane L. Which is still a long way from appearing.

So: I would say this actually looks like a nice project. If you used the Roden kit, spruced it up according to your taste and finances, you'll end up with a unique machine. In my experience, the main drawback of the Roden SE kits is the unsatisfactory shortcut they take with the inspection windows. You may well want to spend some very grudging time digging away at the wings and tailplanes to render something better.
And of course, no SE5 kit, WNW or otherwise, will spare you the character building thrill that is rigging one of these machines.
Go for it! ;)

I tend to agree with Mark. I would go for the Roden kit even if WNW is more detailed and precise fitting in some/most areas. I believe PE is available from Part if you like that detailing route. I have an almost completed Roden Viper powered SE5a in the Hall of Shame section. (Dropped it when almost complete). As with all Roden kits care is needed during assembly but it really builds up nicely with proper caution and test fitting. JMHO,

PS: sorry but I can't recommend any literature on your subject. Nothing in my Personal reference I know of.

Hi Mark, hi RAGIII,
thank you very much for your answers and recommendations! I think, I'll go for the Roden Viper-powered S.E.5a with some extra aftermarket bits and pieces. Still looking for picture-heavy literature and skills for making decals on my own, but I'll have a try...
Best regards!
