Des has given me the signal to proceed with this, however it all hangs on Cheryl's wishes.
In the meantime, we shall assume the operation is a go. Who is in?
The Plan: a giant laminated foam board backed poster featuring a profile view of Gregory's favorite WWI aeroplane, The mighty SPAD C.XIII.
If you are in, that is, you wish to have your name appear on the poster, please respond to this topic with your handle or name as you prefer, along with the country you are from.
Like this:
ModelManiac (John Doe) USA
If you can pledge a buck or two to help defray the printing and shipping costs, that would be appreciated. Bob Von Buckles has already stepped up with $11.50 (thank you vB).
I will update you with thumbnails of the poster / card as it develops. Currently there is a very rough mockup in the other topic.
This is not a two year project. This is happening now. Gregory needs your support. Please speak up if you wish to be included.
That is all, carry on.

Count me in Bo with a pledge for $5 (just let me know where to send it):

Des.
Yes and in fact pledges have already exceeded what I believe this will cost, for I have received a very generous $50 anonymous pledge offline, what I think I will do is divide the actual cost by the total amount pledged, that ratio will inform what you actually can chip in.
So let's say we have $200 pledged and this thing ends up costing $100. If you pledged $5, it'll end up being $2.50. Sound fair?
The balance you can donate to the forum if you like :)
-
Sounds like a good plan Bo ;)

I am surely in:

Your artwork is enough to bring a smile to any SPADophile, Bo.
Great job, my friend.
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Please add me to the card, $5 waiting to be sent.
-
Just had a thought! It doesn't happen often, so listen up!
To save Bo's mouse finger, why don't we all club in a buy one of Russell Smith's beautiful pieces of art and have Russ sign the back - from all the boys @ WW1aircraftmodels.com
I'm up for it! Anyone else?
Cheers,
Bob
(http://www.russellsmithart.com/Small%20pages/assets/big/StartingLine_LG.jpg)
-
Lol, NOW you think of it
-
With all due regard for Bo's work, I would vote for Russell's painting. Anyway, I am going to participate, even if it required raising the stake.
-
Bo as well as Russell are great artists, so I will follow the majority and the contribution may be raised if necessary.
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Considering all the work Bo has already put into this, I say we go with Bo's card and with the overage, order a print from Russ. He's got a SPAD VII in his "Open Print" Gallery for $25. Let's do both.
Cheers,
Bud
-
You are so right Bud. Both will be unique representations. Good thinking my friend!
Kind regards
Patrick

I like this option Bud. From the unanimous response to the original proposal I believe we could do both AND have enough for framing etc and a sizable overage to help the Forum as well. I have several of Russell's prints and enjoy them immensely. Like Patrick, however, I will support the consensus on the final choice. Remember too, Greg could never have enough SPADs! :)
Cheers,
Lance
-
Getting two is even better. I am for it.
PS. Sorry, Bo...
-
Lol, NOW you think of it
Bo, I did say I had a thought! It does take time for the 3 marbles in my cranium to collide, such is the distance between them... lol
I'll go with Bo first and Russ as back up.
Keep up the great work Banana King!

This topic has now been put on hold for the time being. I am still awaiting a reply from Cheryl, Gregory's wife, with a mailing address so we can send the card, if she does not want to give out that information we will have to shelve the idea.
As soon as I hear news from Cheryl I will reopen this topic and let everyone know, it will either be yes or no.
Des.
-
I received the following email from Cheryl today, it is excellent news. Cheryl also sent their mailing address so I will now pass it on to Bo and we can now get the ball rolling.
Des.
Des,
Good afternoon,I've a update for you on Gregory's health. I was told this morning that my husband will be returning home next week after finishing this round of rehab. It's been a long time coming and as you'd guess It's A Very Joyful Day around here. It very hard to believe Gregory has been in the Hospital and then a Rehabilitation Hospital for over 3 months now, He'll still needs more rehabilitation and we're all praying that he will be able to walk again in time .For now he's confined to a much hated wheelchair. But knowing Gregory's strong will I know he'll be out of that chair if at all possible at all as soon as possible.Mentally Gregory is still some what confused at times as to be expected.Sometimes I'm not always certain he knows what as happened to him but he does appear to understand that things are different than before. It took a bit of time but he does recognize our family members now as well as others around him. This is a major improvement from the first while after the stroke when he had not a clue who I was or anyone else . I thank the Lord daily for any improvement in his condition and for still having him with us. Never doubt the power of prayer and faith.
I did tell Gregory that you wanted our address for a card from you and his friends on the forum. I can't tell you how much that boosted his spirits. My personal thanks to you for your very kind offer. Once he's home knowing Gregory he'll want to check in on the forum. I may have to help out a bit with the mouse and tying but I'll see he stops by to see his wonderful modeling friends.Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers. God Bless You and Yours.
Cheryl Jouette
-
Thanks for posting this Des. Please pass on my best wishes to Gregory, via Cheryl, if you are sending a reply?
-
Nice to hear that Gregory comes home to his Family. Best wishes to him and his wife.
Martin
-
Des, consider the ball a-roll ;)
Just got home from work, my files are there, but I should have artwork ready for proof to you guys (name spelling, omissions etc.) tomorrow. After that I will send the files in for production and delivery, should only take a couple of days max.
Cheers
-
i want in too, let me know how to contribute. weve been mates since way back in the aerodrome days.
-
Hello Des,
Thank you for letting us know. I am so glad for Gregory and Cheryl, they have been in my mind every day since.
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Great news. So pleased for him and his family.
-
That's is really good news. With the long delay in hearing back from Cheryl I was fearing the worst
-
Thanks Des (and of course Cheryl) for the update on our good friend Gregory. Let's hope that Cheryl too is bearing up well. Thanks too Bo for the update and all the work on the card.
Best wishes

We have 38 signers. If everyone will simply kick in $2.75 USD we will cover the anticipated cost of $100 + tax. Many folks have pledged much more, but I think it is best to spread it around evenly. Any overage will be donated to the forum.
my paypal is [email protected]
Please do not send me more than $2.75. If you are still feeling generous, make a donation to the site, Bob's girlfriend's cancer charity run, a local stroke research center or whatever. If someone wants to organize the purchase of the Russell Smith print, that's cool too, but don't send me the money for it. Remember that Gregory has a long haul ahead of him -- the print might be a nice boost down the road (just a thought).

Sent just now via Paypal. Thanks!

Payment sent, Bo!

I know you love tweaking things - How about making the white border around the Union Jack half the thickness? Would free up some nano space and look sharp IMHO.
Or, you can tell me to BOG OFF!!!! ;D
Cheers,

Bob -- will fix the Union Jack next go round. Should it have a border at all?
Rob-- sorry. There are several others that fell off too. Will correct.

No border Bo, but I reckon no one is going to be offended if there is a thin one, not in these circumstances.

you're there :)
I flipped things around -- first name, then nick in parens if it is different / confusing / etc
I am thinking of this partly through the eyes of Gregory's friends and loved ones who will see this, I hope you agree this will have more meaning / make more sense to them.
-
Bo,
Well done, mate -
You have done sterling work on this and really put the effort in. Just to say thank you, and the hard work for Gregory is appreciated.

This is Richard, sending a huge "Gute Besserung, Gregory" from Germany!
Great! there is still room for you Richard but I will have to cut off the signing and changes soon so that this can go to press.
The deadline for anyone else who wants to sign the card is today at 1500 UTC. (About 6 hours from now)
Ps -- thanks everyone for the prompt contributions, the response has been nothing short of astonishing and I am sure that some of it will be going back to the forum. At last count I think the tally was over $120.
-
A very hearty "well done" Bo. I'm sure it will warm Gregory's heart to
see how he is held in such high regard from all of us.
Cheers,
Ernie :)

-
Bo- you are a marvel, mate. And not a bad modeller/aeroplane artiste, either. :)
$2.75 sent, as requested.
Dal.
-
My pleasure guys.
Dal: not that it matters much but your payment didn't show up. You might want to recheck who you sent it to.
BUT: thus far I received contributions from some 40+ of the signers (spreadsheet is at work) for a total of not quite $130 after Paypal took its cut. Several people could not follow instructions (well we are talking about a bunch of modellers here :D ) and put in more than was asked.
Meanwhile the total on my credit card for producing the laminated poster with delivery and tax was $100 and some change. The surplus will go to the forum.
Anyone else who meant to contribute but didn't get around to it -- PLEASE DON'T SEND IT TO ME. It will just end up getting nicked twice by Paypal. Instead donate it it directly to the forum, some other worthy cause, or just use it to buy a vac kit at a swap meet and think of Gregory while you are sanding away on those fuselage halves :)

Magnificent work Bo! An outstanding and inspiring get well card, beautifully done. Thank you for your efforts and hard work and I'm sure Gregory and his family will be cheered immensely by it. My contribution should be in your account too.

Postscript : Friday morning I received a call from the FedEx driver out delivering the card. He couldn't find the house. Of course I was of no help and we didn't have a phone number to pass back to the driver for further directions.
Arrrrrggghhh!! :( :( :( :(
After exchanging emails with Des I called back the drivers number but got the messaging system & didn't hear back. At that point I didn't have anything to tell them anyway, except "please keep trying".
Anyway, happy ending, I called the printing office this morning, got a really nice guy who was able to sort out the whole thing and confirm that the card was actually delivered friday morning. The driver I had spoken to was right there and said they were out in their garage.
So... the deed is done. :)
-
Yay! Thanks, Bo!
Cheers,
Bud

Well done, Bo & all who chipped in.
All is well that ends well ;)

I received word back from Cheryl, here is her email;
Des,
Gregory's card arrived here last Friday morning. I had hoped he would be home by then but he was running a fever and not released until yesterday afternoon. We gave him the card as soon as he had settled in a bit. I couldn't tell you how surprised Gregory was when he saw it. He's rarely shows much emotion but this time he surprised us all and was very emotional about what you and the guys on the forum did for him. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. It really was a very sweet gesture from all of Gregory's friends.
It will be awhile before Gregory will be posting again. But knowing him it won't be long before he's checking the forum to see what's going on . In the near future there's still a lot of physical therapy to be done. Most of the damage from the stroke was on his left but the right hand side of his body was also effected but not as nearly severe. Most of the right side effects appear to have been temporary. As for his left side ,still improving but some of the difficulties are very likely permanent from what the Doctors have told Gregory and I. Honestly I think they don't know Gregory too well as hard headed should be been his middle name.
Again thank you and God Bless ,
Cheryl Jouette

Thank you Des... Great that Gregory is home.
-
I read Cheryl's message having just finished a long, late stint preparing detailed feedback for students on their last assignment. Her reply and Greg's reaction brought a tear to my eye. Thank you Des and Bo for making this display of our friendship and support possible.
Best wishes
Nigel

PS at last count this little escapade raised $47 US for the forum, not counting whatever might have been donated directly in lieu of contributing to the card fund, so you guys can feel good about that, too :)
-
All the applause needs to go to Bo for the effort and time he put into preparing and organising delivery of the giant card, without him none of this would have happened. So my heart felt thank you Bo for bringing a smile to Gregory's face.
Also many thanks to all the members who contributed towards the card, your donations certainly helped to make all of this become reality, the left over funds which Bo so kindly donated to the forum will go towards building and maintaining the forum and trying to keep it as the best and fastest growing WW1 aircraft forum on the net.
Des.

My pleasure, truly. This is a special bunch you've brought together here Des.
-
A big thank You to Bo for taking charge of the whole thing and getting it done, mailed, and knowing how much such a seemingly simple thing can mean to someone in Gregs' position. That said, Des, you created a pretty cool spot for a bunch of like minded lads to hang out, so good on ya as well.
-
Awesome job, Bo! Thank you for putting this all together!
You guys are top notch and this is one of the reasons I really enjoy hanging out here!
Mark

Bless him :)

It's so good to hear that Gregory is home. It will be a long
recuperation, but he has already started. I am really pleased
he appreciated the card so much. :D :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Good to hear about Gregory's reaction. And a big thank you to Bo, for doing all the work and to Des for supporting it and all you outstanding members of this forum who supported it. I feel honored to be part of this international community.

Ivo

Thank you Des, for passing on this heartening news on Greg's condition. A long road to recovery ahead however it's great to hear that optimism and his determined spirit are part of the journey. As with all of his friends here he is much in my thoughts and knowing he appreciates our concerns and encouragement puts things in a more positive light. Let's hope the future holds only improvement and positive prospects; hard headedness is a good thing in many situations and this is one of them.
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks Des for the update and passing on Cheryl's email. It is good to know that Gregory has received the card and the effect. Hopefully he will be able to continue to improve, follow the forum and contribute again. Again, a special thanks to Bo for ramrodding the card, the collection of the money and ensuring it made it to the final destination. I concur with Bo and everyone else here that this is a great forum and truly a wonderful bunch of folks we share our lives with.
Best

Thank you Des and Bo for making it all possible.
It is truly wonderful to be a part of a forum where although we never meet or know each other personally, we are all still people who show genuine concern for one another.
-
I want to join this thread, I spoke to Bo via PM to get my signature on the card as well, I am very fond to Gregory because he was the one who showed me this forum and I was happy to join.
Best wishes to Greg and hugs to his family.

I just stumbled across this old thread from 2014 and saw that all the old WIP artwork was gone. Well, it's gone for good, -- but I still have the final :)
