After gathering a lot of information and drawing scale plans I am now just about ready to tackle my next scratch build, this time the Battaille triplane. I ordered materials today so by mid week I should be able to make an initial start. I am not making any promises with this build, data is very hard to come by, I have no measurement at all, so most of the build will be done with the aid of my scale drawings which I have managed to create from photos and a very rough drawing from the net. This could end up being a lengthy build.
This is a very interesting aeroplane, the top and bottom wings had an adjustable incidence while the centre wing was fixed, the entire frame was built from timber including the enclosed boat fuselage. The engine was a Gregoire (gyp) four cylinder of around 40hp, it was water cooled and mounted inverted to lower the centre of gravity. Believe it or not but this aeroplane did fly and apparently quite well, but, like most planes of that era it was underpowered.

I'm really excited about this one, Des! This will be the most unusual and interesting aeroplane any of us has ever taken on. Can't wait to see you work your magic on this one, mate.
Cheers,
Bud
-
that is so cool des, i know you had talked about it but now you have started a thread, you are commited, i am teasing of course, but i truly cant wait to see this thing progress. should be interesting.
-
Hello Des,
This could well be the "Build of the year". I am convinced it will! Looking so forward to see your progress. Good luck!
Kind regards
Patrick
-
I'll be watching this topic with curiosity .
Jacek

Hi Des,
I was waiting for this post, this is gona be a terrific build and I (and many others) will enjoy it!
I will gona get some popcorn and sit on the first row to watch it!
best regards,
Sasho
-
What an interesting challenge for you, Des. I'm excited to see what sort of ingenuity you come up with to deal with this one.
Good luck!
-
What an unusual aeroplane! I really like those early experimental types and admit that I had never heard of this one. In your expert hands I am sure that we are going to be in for a real treat as you work out how to put this one together. Lack of specific detail can be a bonus and a pain - it allows a little licence as nobody can claim that you are wrong, but sometimes it creates problems about how the thing went together!
Best of luck Des. I am in the front row with SsashoO.
-
Looking forward to this build, Des ;)
Happy Scratchin'

Des,
I was not familiar with this one but from the picture I can tell that I will certainly enjoy watching this one. A very nice looking aircraft!

I am so looking forward to wayching this one develop. Seems like the front row is going to be pretty big with so many of us sitting there watching. :)

I have commenced the build by making the unusual undercarriage, fuselage support and top wing support, this had been made from a very fine grained timber.
A full build log of this model can be found here http://www.ww1aircraftmodels.com/page49.html
The timber I used is very easy to work with and is reasonably strong, it sands very nicely. The first photo shows the method used to make the fuselage support member, cutting it from a solid piece after it was glued to the legs was a lot easier.
This photo shows the two leg assemblies ready for attachment to the skids, the front legs have the strengthening bar. To cut the timber out to form the fuselage support member I used my Dremel, firstly with a cutting disc then finished off with a drum sander.
This next photo shows the front and rear leg assemblies fitted to the skids, the skids are made from styrene sheet with the curve formed around a piece of aluminium tube. For strength I fixe the skids to the legs with five minute epoxy.
I will be using a set of Steven Robson 760 wheels for this model, this photo shows a trial fit. I will endeavour to find a set of whitish O Rings for these wheels as they would be more appropriate for the era of this aircraft.

I made the top section of the assembly using 0.03mm styrene sheet, most of this will be hidden inside the top wing, I need to add the incidence adjusting gears and chains later.
I made the aileron actuating bell crank which mounts on the rear of the undercarriage frame. Bear in mind that all I have to go by with everything I have done so far are photos, I have no measurements at all.

I painted the timber with Humbrol Gloss Cote with a few drops of Humbrol Clear Orange added, this gives the colour I was aiming for. The green is a mixture of Humbrol No.65 and Humbrol No.226, this gives me a colour which matches photos of the Battaille.

As ever Des' .... nothing more than a pleasure just to see these pic's unfold across the pages. It all looks so simple and rational as you lay it out: but there again it always does look easy when someone of such a calibre executes their craft.
I will watch this with much enthusiasm and delight - as is usual with one of your builds.
-
O my Des, this baby is alive and growing fast. As Andy said everything seems easy coming of your skilfull hands. I am really speechless because there are no words for this.
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Oh dear me, it is Him again... ;) What a start to, I am sure, yet one more fabulous project. I will be watching this one with utmost interest and pleasure!
-
<----speechless, and it is just the undercarriage! :o
-
Well I'm stunned Des.
Could you please, please, convince Ron or some other Master caster to do the early aviation genre as kits, in resin, 1/32 scale, all your previous scratch builds and, hmmm, I'll put something in your Christmas stocking.
Just very exciting, I'm with Ssasho0, got my popcorn and a front row seat.
Steven
-
Just plain superb.
What that man said +1
Excellent start, Des ;)
vb

Great stuff Des! I am always impressed by your meticulous approach to the order of construction and your use vof a multitude of techniques. I have learned so much from your pursuits. Thanks! ;D
Cheers,
Bob
-
Des,
You mentioned searching for white O Rings to replace the black supplied with the Spoked Wheels; I had great results airbrushing them with enamel (Model Master) for my present Pfalz Build. Since the black ones would be basically "throw-aways" you might want to consider giving it a try as I suspect white O Rings of the correct size might be hard to come by.
Looking magnificent as usual, and as SsashoO said, "it's only the undercarriage"!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Des it`s going to be a feast for the early birds lovers - me included. With your skills it`s going to be a magnificent model!
-
Awesome start, Des! The wood looks fantastic. Can't beat the real thing.
Cheers,
Bud
-
I'd be worried about the paint on the o-rings cracking over time as it (the paint) ages and shrinks... :o
Me too Bo, however I reasoned that I can always fall back to the Kit tires......... If and when the dreaded cracks appear I'll "fessup"! (though not an option for Des)
Cheers,
Lance
-
Oh my goodness me, Des, you have another great piece of work under way. What strikes me so much is your sense of vision - knowing how to break things down into logical stages and sequences. I can't wait to see this one progress.
Best wishes
Nigel
-
Fantastic! I'm always amazed at what you can pull together from various materials. I real learning experience!
-
damn i wish you would cast resin copies of your subassemblies and sell em to us.

Another unique airplane in the works and your start is impressive!!!!!
Steve

I'm stunned by your craftsmanship, Des. The Battaille is going to be one of
your best. I will be avidly following along. Beautiful work, my friend.

Another masterpiece coming out.
It will be a pleasure to follow this one.

Thanks very much for all the wonderful comments, I really appreciate all the kind words.

I have made a little more progress with this build, this time I have made the bottom half of the fuselage frame. The spine is made from 1.0mm x 2.0mm styrene strip, the two longerons are from 1.0mm x 1.5mm styrene strips while the braces are from 1.0mm x 1.0mm strips. It is a very long fuselage with the tail still to be added.

This is great work, I'm really enjoying watching this.
-
Thanks very much for all your kind comments, they are truely appreciated.
I have started the planking in the bottom half of the fuselage, I am using 2.5mm x 0.5mm styrene strips, quite a time consuming job. The box looking top section of the fuselage was plywood on the original aeroplane so it will be coloured to simulate ply. I have also added the grear for the top wing incidence actuating mechanism, it is a gear from a clock which I purchased from ebay, it is from a Steampunk supplier and I purchased a 30g pack of watch/clock parts, I have enough gears to last a life time of modeling.

Hello Des,
The fuselage is wonderful. I have been near the aircraft and once painted it will be just that! The gear looks very convincing too. This will be an amazing build and I'm looking forward to see your next awesome progress. So well done Des!
Kind regards

I can only concur with what has already been written. Amazing work on a most interesting early type. All those gears….. what will you do with them? I can see many more super models on the horizon….

Its ideas like the whole watch/clock parts thing that you never think of until you discover someone else who has done this, thanks a million Des!

Just what I was thinking...great idea!

I have the planking finished now on the fuselage, I still need to add the cover strips to the top half of the fuselage planks. I also made a seat from styrene sheet, I will fix some edge beading around the seat back. The fuselage is not far off being painted in a wood colour.

A temporarily fitted the wheels and sat the rear of the fuselage on ground level, I put the seat in the fuselage and threw a pilot onto the seat just to get a general feel of the size of the plane. Photos of the real aeroplane show the pilot sitting very high so the way my pilot is sitting is about right.

Great work as usual Des.
That first pic certainly emphasises how odd the design was - it looks as though the fuselage is in some sort of cradle for maintenance work, not a part of the machine itself!

Steven
-
thats really looking impressive. and i'm not just trying to stroke your ego. that is comin on very nicely. great job.
-
Wonderful work Des - I can only agree with all of the other comments.
Just a passing comment about the fuselage as I have been doing a little research on the Avro Triplane and type D biplane recently: both of these designs had a triangular shape fuselage (as per the frame on the Bataille, and both had a front end that resembles the bow of a boat. I note that the Bataille also has such a shape. Clearly at this very early stage of aero-design some people were treating the dynamics of airflow around the front of the fuselage as being similar to a boat in water. (This is not so surprising as air acts like a fluid). Obviously this was purely experimental and was soon abandoned but it does show how these designers were really struggling to learn how to cope in a novel environment.
-
Superb.
-
Des it`s brilliant as always. Your skills match the ability to find the extremely interesting and unique subjects. All of the models you have built are the ones I would like to build myself someday!

Outstanding progress Des! Beautiful and skillful work as always!

Here is a mock-up of the tail assembly, it is quite a large tail compared with the airframe. The shading has been done with a lead pencil and once the tail is painted the shading will be just visible. The timber colour on the fuselage is done with oil paints over a base of Gunze acrylic paint, the top of the nose section will be done to represent plywood. I made and fitted all the little metal brackets which run down the side of the fuselage, these are made from strips of brass sheet drilled, cut and sanded to size then fitted to the fuselage with a brass pin. They have been painted with the same green I used for the metal fittings on the undercarriage frame. The spoked wheels, a Steven Robson product, have now been fixed to the undercarriage frame.

Staggeringly good.

Thanks for all the very kind comments, they are much appreciated.
I made and fitted the two wing incidence adjusting wheels. I also applied plywood to the top front section of the fuselage, the undercarriage framework is now fitted to the fuselage. I have also painted the tail and fitted the fin/rudder to the tail plane. I fitted the "steering wheel" and the seat to the cockpit, also made and fitted a pressure pump.

Before fitting the tail I needed to complete the rigging of the fuselage frame, this has now been done, there is a total of 26 turnbuckles just in this section, I used 0.12mm monofilament for the wires and CA to hold it all together, the tail can now be fitted in position and rigged.

this is just too good!
-
Did you notice an appreciable increase in the torsional strength? I should hope you got some sort of structural benefit out of all of that. But of course, I'm talking to Des, here. Whereas that rigging may take years off a mere mortal, that's just raw fuel in the afterburner for the rigmeister!
Great stuff, Des.

I finished the rigging on the top of the tail plane, elevator and rudder rigging is also done. Close-up photo shows the little metal brackets I made which fit over the top of the elevator control horns, small but functional.

It looks even better and better with every update!
Des,
What do you used to make the hinges and the other blue/greenish parts? Is this metal (custom PE) or very thin polystirol or something else?
Best regards,
Sasho
-
All the metal parts are just that, metal. I use thin brass sheet which is 0.2mm thick, I cut this to the required width, usually about 1.0mm, by using a razor saw, this gives a good clean cut, a steel ruler is used as a guide. The holes are drliied using tungsten carbide drill bits usually about 0.3mm in size, they will drill through the thin brass very quickly.

I have no words for this Des! Unbelievable.

Des, this is far better than the real replica in the museum. Can't believe my eyes!
Kind regards
Patrick
-
This is a masterwork Des! Your fabrication, incorporation and use of small metal fittings and bolts, etc., is really quite remarkable and extremely realistic--looks great too! ;D What are the gearboxes on the incident adjusting mechanism made from? Thanks! This is sublime modeling.
Regards,
Bob
-
The lower V shaped housing is made from styrene sheet while the small top one is brass sheet. The gears are from watch/clock parts. The main large support which mounts to the fuselage is made from 1.0mm thick styrene sheet with 0.5mm copper wire fitted for the mounting brackets, these were flattened and a 0.3mm hole drilled, I used a 0.3mm brass pin to secure them to the fuselage with CA.

Des, Your work continues to be AMAZING! I guess I need to buy a watch so I can tear it apart for gears 8)

You're running the risk of bettering yourself yet again, mate! Truly astonishing stuff.

I am in awe of your work, Des. While the total view of the fuselage is amazing...the wood
colours are wonderful, by the way, the close-up of the undercarriage is absolutely inspiring!
More, please. :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Des,
Somehow I didn't follow this topic as the subject Battaille isn't very appealing to me. But now I went through 8 pages and I must say that you have produced a tremendous scratch built sofar. It is becoming a really stunning model of a very rare plane.
I can only admire and praise your scratchbuilding skills.
with kind regards,
Ivo
-
The engine for this plane was an inverted Gregoire-Gyp 40hp water cooled 4 cylinder type. This engine had the unusual aspect of having all four cylinder enclosed within a cooling jacket. The only reference material I have are three very blurry photos so a lot of the build will be guess work. Here is the engine so far, the box sitting on top of the engine appears to be an oil tank, I still need to add a few pipes. Next job is to make the cooling jacket to encase the cylinders. The propeller I have sitting on the engine is not the one Ihat I will be using on this model.

Lovely Des! You have this ability to make things appear effortless when we all know how much work has gone into it.
The pre-war era must have been a fascinating time for those pioneer builders. Maybe the only surprise is that I haven't come across an aircraft held together wholly by dovetail joints - although friends on the forum will, no doubt, know better!
Best wishes
Nigel
-
holy crap, that looks good, i am really wanting to build one of these, when is the model kit coming out? seriously looking soooo nice though des.
-
Here is the nearly completed engine sitting in the airframe, I made and fitted the push rods, rocker arms, valve springs and added the water jacket plumbing. I still need to add the fuel lines and the ignition leads from the magneto to the spark plugs. The hand shot gives a size comparison of this engine.

Hello Des,
I'm sure this will be the build of the year. Every update I'm more astonished. I have the greatest respect of what you accomplish.
Kind regards

Stunning and …..err….. Sorry run out of words…. Brilliant is not enough.

Hi Bo,
Good idea, but I think it will only last a couple of days until the next update.
Kind regards

Bo, do you have copyright on that word? Do we need to pay royalties? In the meanwhile I'll turn to my adopted language and say 'chapeau' Des, which in familiar parlance is a compliment too! Long may your magnificent work continue.
Best wishes

Truly a thing of beauty; can't think of any other way to describe it.
This is Modelling at it's best, and inspirational beyond words. Yet another one to be extremely proud of, Des.

Thanks guys for all your wonderful comments, they are very much appreciated.
A smallish update. I made and fitted the two radiators, they hide most of the work I put into making the engine. The radiators are made up of 0.4mm copper wire and 2.0mm half round styrene strips, the finished paint is Humbrol Antique Bronze polished with 0000 Steel Wool, the copper wire is left natural.

Quality work Des, quite extraordinary.
Curiously these photos popped up on my Facebook news overnight from Stefano Strani

Thanks Jamo for the photos, as you can see the restored example has the incorrect engine, apparently the correct engine is extremely difficult to come by so the museum opted for the less expensive alternative. The original engine was an inverted Gregoire (GYP) 40hp four cylinder engine, the one the museum selected was a 1908/1910 Chenu engine.

I have the bottom wing just about completed, it is made up of two layers of 1.0mm styrene sheet bent to shape and allowed to dry. The ribs are 1.5mm half round styrene strips, the ribs on the rear section are made from Bob's stripper 1.0mm wide. As can be seen by the photo the bottom wing has only a very short span, the top wing will be the same span while the centre wing will be much longer.

I agree, it's a very unusual beastie. Amazing that it got off the ground.
Beautiful scratch build Des, your wings look like Milky Bar Chocolate for modellers. Looking at Des' photos this Battaille design it is almost like a mechanical flying insect.
-
Hello Des,
Outstanding and great progress. This has been such a quick build to now too. I have a question. Some planes like this one , had these curved wings on the backside. Was there any particular reason or was it just ornamental?
Kind regards
Patrick

Amazing! Frankly speaking Des I`m speechless ;) Words simply cannot express my admiration of your work.

I wholly agree that this machine looks ever more extraordinary with each new element added. How did these things ever fly?
The modelling is beyond words - but that is now well established. I am having problems working out which photos are of the full sized replica and which are of the model.
-
Beautiful work.
Steve

The bottom wing has now been fixed and some rigging fitted to add some more stability. The top wing is only sitting in position for photo purposes, I still need to add the ribs which will be 1.0mm half round styrene strips. The top wing is made up of two layers of 1.0mm styrene sheet glued together then shaped around an aerosol can.

Excellent work Des. Quick question - when youre shaping the wing do you warm the plastic before wrapping it around the spray can? You may have answered this before...
Steve
-
. . . and to further amplify Steve's question, how do you secure the recently-glued laminated wing to the aerosol can while the glue dries? Tape, rubber bands, . . . ???
Bob
-
I don't heat the plastic before bending to shape, the glue softens the plastic enough. I use duct tape to secure the wing to the can, or what ever cylindrical device you are using, it adheres really well and can be stretched and pulled down tight, the tape I use is 50mm or 2 inches wide. I always leave the wing with the tape applied overnight, this allows the glue to dry thoroughly.
Des.
-
Just to give you an idea of what this beast looks like with all wings in position, it doesn't make the aeroplane look any prettier. The top wing has now been fixed in position and rigged as is the bottom wing. The centre wings are just sitting on their locating pins at the moment, there is a bit of dihedral on these centre wings. I'm now only a few steps off completing this model, next lot of photos will be of the finished model.

Fabulous work as always Des, thanks for enlightening us all with this hitherto almost unknown beast! Looking forward to an Avro Triplane next..... ;)

Des,
NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE QUALITY AND BEAUTY OF YOUR WORK!
RAGIII
-
Good question Ian, and I can't give you an answer. I have looked at all the data I have on this aeroplane and there is not a sign of any foot steps or hand holds, and climbing over the fabric covered wings would not be a satisfactory solution. So, this will have to be left to your own imagination.

While she'll never be mistaken for a graceful looking aeroplane, she'll definitely turn heads! Superb modelling my friend.

Your next wonderful exclusive build Des.

Thanks guys and gals for all your wonderful comments, they are very much appreciated.
As far as my next scratch build I am pretty sure it will be the Blackburn Heavy Monoplane of 1909, quite an unusual design but it did actually fly albeit only briefly before crashing. I am in the process of building the WNW DFW at present so this will give me time to gather some more information on the Blackburn, like all of these very early aircraft information is very scarce.
Des.
-
Amazing work, Des. Scratch building is an art unto itself and you consistently nail your often unusual subjects. Congratulations on a marvelous replica of a pioneer aircraft. Looking forward to seeing your DFW, too!

Hello to all,
What a incredible work !!! Reading all those pages was a real pleasure. Congratulations Des !!! :)
In french, we have a nice work for those "birds" : trapanelle. ;)

Ok, Des, what can I say? Nothing! I love it !! Pietro

Thank you so much Ufag and Pietro for your very kind comments. The Battaille was one of my most unusual subjects to try and scratch build, the lack of technical information made the job even more difficult but I think my representation is close to the original.
Des.

Des,
My apologies for missing your latest build. What else can I say? Outstanding work on another unusual subject - very impressive. This is going to be a truly amazing model when complete.
