This kit has been a shelf-queen for years but I finally have pulled through and finished it up. I had no end of troubles with it - mostly my own doing - and it is great to get it completed. Build logs started on two forums (both now defunct or not allowing discussion on models any more) but never could get it wrapped up till now.
The aircraft as depicted was flown by Heinrich Dembrowsky of Squadron Kest 5; in November 1918 this aircraft along with several others of Kest 5 were flown to Switzerland to avoid turning them over to the Allies. The logo on the sides of the aircraft is the crest of the pilots former Grenadier regiment.
Also used Gaspatch turnbuckles (both 1/32 and 1/48 sizes) Master Spandau barrels, Pheon decals for the national insignia, the logo on the sides of the fuselage artwork was done by Peter Thierstein (back in the Aerodrome forum days) and I had it printed on decal paper in gold by Fireball Modelworks. Peter also sent me some photoetched parts for this kit that he was working on and I have used them.
I created "templated" lozenge decals to fit the kit based on the lozenge patterns done by Doug Baumann again back from the Aerodrome forum. Rigging is black monofilament looped through the turnbuckles at one end, secured with a small section of micro tube and I used Bob's Buckles eyelets at the non turnbuckle end of each rigging line.

She's truly breathtaking, Petrov! So glad to see that you've finally finished her! How long has the modeling section of the 'drome been closed? She's well worth the wait, my friend.
Cheers,
Bud

I agree 100%. I was watching in the OLD DROME days and am glad you finally got her done!

Gorgeous colour scheme, Petrov, and beautifully done. The interior work is remarkably clean and the black finish, never easy, stands out from the ordinary. Very nicely done!
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks a ton for the positive feedback! I think I started it early 2011 maybe?

What a beautiful Siemens, Petrov. The lozenge and colour scheme are great.
Such a treat to see such an amazing model.
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Hello Petrov:
I do remember you working this on the Drome. You really did an outstanding job on this bird and it looks great. Like Lance said, the interior is clean and well executed and appointed. Just a treat for the eyes.
Best

I'm glad you hauled this back out. I love all black paint jobs. Beautiful work!
Lindsay

O my Petrov, what a wonderful aircraft you made. As Lindsay I love the black painting. It's a real amazing build, interior, lozenge, rigging and paintwork. Great craftmanship. Many congratulations, another joy for the eye!!
Kind regards
Patrick

I also remember this model from the drome days and often wondered what happened to it, to see it now all finished is such a treat, you have done a superb job on this model and the colour scheme is brilliant.

I agree with all that has be written - a real piece of craftsmanship and a truly inspiring finish. In fact an inspiring model all round.
-
Thanks again gents - always good to hear positive feedback!

Excellent model and from a kit that doesn't seem to get built very often. I particularly like how you handled the details on the topside of the forward fuselage.
-
Very, very nice Petrov. A lovely build. The photos you've taken really do justice to this powerful beast of a plane and show what skilled hands can achieve even with not the best of kits.
Best wishes
Nigel

By the way, how was this kit for ease of building? I had never really considered this kit, but after seeing your build I may reconsider.

Beautifully finished Petrov. I wasn't exactly over the moon that Eduard was bringing out a SSW DIII this year, but having seen your lovely model, I'm quite looking forward to it :)
Cheers,
Tony.

Truly lovely! Thank you for sharing, Petrov.
I am just starting to get interested in this type. Seems to have been flown by KEST 6 (Hangelar-aerodrome near Cologne), later JASTA 86, too - as far as I understand. Does anyone have any more Information on KEST 6 / Jasta 86? Photos even? much appreciated.
Thanx all!
Richard

Hi Lindsay - it is a bit rough but not the worst I have seen. The fuselage detail is pretty poor - the panel lines are large trenches and the hand-holds are not in exactly the right locations. I filled these in and scribed new panel lines and also corrected the handhold locations.
Fit wise, I found the fit of the horizontal tail and lower wing to the fuselage both very poor, needing lots of work and putty. It has a fair number of parts for the interior though the locations where they fit exactly are a little vague. I made a new seat from plastic card and redid some of the instruments but otherwise used the kit parts.

i remember thisawesome build the doug baumann lozenge looks sweet againts the black fuselage. i also remember another build from the aerodrome days. there was a guy who had designed a photoetched set that he did at home and made the engine cylinders from stacks of pe rings,he altermated the diameter to simulater the cooling fins. what ever happened to that guy?

Yes - that build was done by Peter Thierstein - he sent me a few of his etched parts and I used them on this build. I know he had done many more etched bits and it was a very ambitious build he was doing. I think he went on to the Great War Air forum and I think he continued it there but I dont think it was completed.

It is a very fine SSW, petrov! That black fuselage with personal insignia looks very attractive. Congratulations on bringing this build to such an end!
-
Petrov,
I'm glad to see you finished this gem my old friend. Awesome paint scheme!
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette

Fantastic build Petrov. Keep going.
All the best ;)

I have been waiting a very long time for this one , very well done !
Terri

Thanks Terri! Yes it was really great to wrap this build up after so long!
-
Superb, Petrov -
I really like the colour/scheme markings on this one a well.
The main problem that I had with this kit was getting to lower wing on - it just did not fit at all!

Hi Petrov
By coincidence I came across this forum and ... found these wonderful pics of this very attractive aircraft. Although all has been said before I wanted to congratulate you to such a "masterpiece".
And of course I feel a little ashamed to see the Roden D.III presented in its full splendour here. Something I haven't been able to do yet.
and it was a very ambitious build he was doing. I think he went on to the Great War Air forum and I think he continued it there but I dont think it was completed.
"Too ambitious" I think, and I don't know if I ever will start all over again.
All the best,
Peter

Just gorgeous. The black and gold finish with the lozenges makes it one of the most beautiful WWI birds in my opinion.
-
Hi Peter - great to hear from you and glad you found the forum! Hope you can get back to your plan on your build of the SSWDIII - your etched parts were extremely impressive!
Thanks all again for the positive feedback on this build!
