Title: SMW Telford 2013 Show Report
Post by: Gisbod on November 11, 2013, 05:21:34 AM
Hello all,

Just got back from Telford and.. Wow! Fabulous  :o

It's bigger than you can even imagine and absolutely packed the whole time. I turned up on Saturday morning an hour before opening and all the car parks were full.. Who says it's a dying hobby!

This is the competition area (before it opened - it was hard to get in there during the days):

The standard was ridiculously high  :o

This one didn't even get a mention.. ::)

I somehow managed a couple of commendations and the Gaspatch Trophy  ;D Despite not coming in the medals, I was pretty pleased when you see the quality of the other entries.

The Gaspatch Salmson is incredible... it's like a perfect Wingnuts kit that's shrunk! The photo doesn't do it justice.. I had to buy it and it's next on the bench  :)

Other stuff - This Airfix 1/24th Typhoon seemed to be catching everyone's eye - Airfix have come a long way!

If you get the chance to go in the coming years - Just do it!

Cheers,

Guy

Shame your Fokker Spinne wasn't there Des - I'm sure that would have won the lot..

Thanks for posting the photos Guy.  That’s some amazing WW1 modelling.

You scored two commendations and won the Gaspatch Trophy at Telford!  :)

Now that makes you an Ace.  8)

Clearly, a very happy landing in Telford for your wonderful modelling skills with a spectacular result.

Thanks! But seeing everyone else's amazing models sure was inspiring.

Can't wait for next year now  ;D

It's a pity Wingnuts weren't there, but I guess it's a long way to go! The only other rather surprising absence was Eduard.

Guy,
Thanks for the overview, I would have worn myself out trying to take in everything. Your recognition was very much deserved, that Albie was a winner from the start! As for the few examples you provided it certainly verifies that there are some incredibly skilled Folks out there who work in the WWI Subjects area.....incredible.
Again, Congratulations on that beautiful Trophy. :)
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks Lance  ;)

But the Alby was waaay down the pecking list, believe me. Maybe next year I should give out some cards to the other competitors with a link to the forum? It'd be nice to see some of those beasties in the making!

Des, you could probably get hold of an emailing list from the competition secretary of the WW1 categories if you fancied recruiting them?

Shame you weren't there Lance..

Hello Guy and heartiest congratulations.

I don't quite know how our paths didn't cross at Telford - my apologies. Like you, I met Gary (Trackpad), Richard at Aviattik, Rowan and Sabine at Pheon, Vlad and the team at Uschi/Nordland (?), and Kostas and colleagues at Gaspatch. It was a pleasure to meet them all.

Telford was amazing, not just because of the superb models on display, but also in terms of the great support accessories produced by our forum friends and the advice they so freely give. Being able to seek Richard's advice on lozenge finishes (and seeing his great display of actual samples) was priceless. Chatting with Rowan about the Mimmi markings on his beautiful D.VII, took me into new directions; I'll now have to order a D.VII from WnW. Vlad put me right on which colour wood decal to select for an Albatros yet to be bought. Meeting, talking with, and learning yet more from Gary about my EV concerns and much else was a pleasure.

But then what can I say about Kostas and the crew at Gaspatch? For me, in terms of new releases there were two jaw-dropping moments. The first was their 1/48 Salmson 2A2. A full display of the sprues, a built model  and the rest of the box contents seem to take things to new highs.  It wasn't just the moulding finesse, the exquisite engine, the in-box choices offered and the superb instruction manual. There was also a cardboard jig to assemble which would ensure the correct  lower wing dihedral, and that the fuselage and horizontal tail surface alignment would be perfect. Of the three 2A2 variants available, I went for the mid type. Now that was a purchase I wasn't expecting to make.

The other amazing new release could easily have been missed by early birds who rushed past the Airfix stand first thing on Saturday. At 10.30 (I think) they unveiled an incredible 1/24 Hawker Typhoon. There were test sprue shots and three builds of this beast. From what I can gather, the release date will be 6 June - D-Day, and the price will be, I think £99. Guy's photo earlier in this thread will give you a good flavour.

Just one other thing, again beyond our focus but look out in the modelling press for features on a stunning 1/72 Flower Class corvette.

Perhaps it was an act of kindness that the ATM in the exhibition centre stopped working, but as I type, I look at a collection of great bits and pieces, books, decals and models bought. Roll on next year.

Best wishes
Nigel

Thanks again chaps,

Sorry I missed you Nigel.. Yes, what a show! I spent about 3 times what I was budgeting for  :P Bought 4 models and heaps of other stuff, but it was well worth it..

I'm planning for next year already - Maybe see you then?

Guy

Ps

I was sorely tempted by the Alley Cat resin 1/32 Bristol M.1 and Vickers Vimy (in 1/48th), but I'd already bought too much by that stage!

Has anyone had a go at the Vimy? Looked great.. Future project perhaps..
