Absolutely first rate work so far, Flip, just like your Pup.  The cockpit painting is brilliant and the wing shading is perfect.  Excellent job on the engine, as well.
Cheers,
Bud

Inspiring Flip! That looks absolutely stunning. What did you use for the green/brown PC10? Keep up the good work my friend, and don't forget to bring it to Geel after the summer so we can compare notes! Cheers, Jeroen

Thx for the kind words Gentlemen :-)

@Jeroen:  I mixed up a color myself for this one. I have used Gunze RLM81, brown violet (which is actually green) and Gunze dark yellow (which has a green hue)
To achieve the color variations, I'm using filters of oil paints (light green, naples yellow, etc etc)

I hope to finish this one before our show in september. Will you come to the club in august? Looking fwd to see your SE5a in RL as well :-)

All the best

Flip

Flip,

This and the Pup are just incredible - they're exactly what I want mine to look like before I start but never quite achieve..

You must have an artist's background? I'd be really interested to see anything else you've done.

Do you use artist oils for the overall filters?

I would like to have at least a third of your mastery with painting...

but, well, dreaming is free, isn't it? so, I would like to be able to build and paint as you!! ;D ;D ;D

thanks again guys :-)

@Guy, No I don't have an artistic background (have a degree in aeronautical engineering :-)), but I'm lucky enough to be a member of a modelling club that has some top notch figurine and AFV modellers and I learned a lot from them. Most of the techniques I use are quite similar to the ones that are commonly used by figurine painters. They are not too difficult to master, but are very effective. Check out the works of Jaume ortiz or my friends Staf Sneyers, kristof Pullinckx (AFV modellers) and Marijn Van Gils (AFV and figurines) for examples.

For weathering I always use oil paints, because I find I have (almost  ;)) total control over them. I seldom use overall filters but use them more to create variation (to pick out panels that where made out of different materials for instance)

Little update on the Hisso as well.
Been trying to replicate worn dark leather. This I did using life color acrylics. Should I leave it this way or should I lighten up the worn area's a bit more?

The leather coaming looks worn, dark overall, and very real. You've "aced" it, I wouldn't change it at all!
Great work!

Thanks again guys.

yesterday, I've painted the headrest. All done in Vallejo and Lifecolor acrylics.

The picture is not great but it's the best I could do for now...

Now, I'm going to finish the engine. Still need to finish up the plumbing.

Since I want to present the SE5a on a little vignette, I have started work on the figurines as well.
i'll be using one Model Cellar figurine, that I've already painted up for the pup, but will use with the Hisso now.
The other figurine will be a partly scratchbuild. For the heads, I always use Hornet resin heads, as they are the best IMHO.
started by painting the face, because that's always the most difficult part.  face finished, but still some work to do on the hair :-) All painting done with Humbrol enamels.

For my next project (Fokker Eindecker), I intend to scratch build a pilot, sitting in the cockpit.

Beautifully done, Flip!  I think the leather colour is
perfect.  You really have captured so many tones in
the whole model.  You have a great eye for painting.
The idea for the pilot in the Eindecker is great.  That's
not done much and an interesting plan.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Consummate art, Flip!  The worn leather look you have achieved on the headrest looks absolutely like the real thing.

I am interested in your figure painting.  I hope you will share your techniques an process with us.  If the pilot matches the aircraft, he will be stunning!

Bob

The finish you have on this SE5a is exactly what I'd like to be able to emulate with my models. Sadly, I'm eons away from replicating what I see here but I'll keep plugging away at it. Your finish is just superb!

Chris

I totally agree with rhinocrat. What a peace of art. My SE5a is starting to look like a plane that has been in the war for more than 20 years. Looking for a hammer too!

Kind regards
