Title: Hello and welcome
Post by: Des on April 13, 2012, 07:36:13 AM
Welcome to the ww1aircraftmodelsforum.

This is the new forum home for WW1 aircraft modellers wishing to discuss WW1 models and modelling with fellow enthusiasts.

This forum is a logical extension of Des Delatorre’s WW1aircraftmodels.com website and has been created to meet an often- requested wish for a dedicated discussion forum on a site solely dedicated to WW1aircraft models.

Those of you familiar with the Great War In the Air Forum will know that Des was also co-owner of that site and Moderator of the modelling boards. What is not widely known is Des and co-owner Andrew had a major policy disagreement on the future direction of the GWA site. Des pushed for growth in the modelling coverage while Andrew- who is not a modeller- was uncomfortable and preferred his vision for the GWA as a history-focussed site. It was a conflict of history vs models. It became evident the two directions were not compatible.

The fact is the GWA forum is an aviation history site and its models coverage is an afterthought rather than a primary focus. Hence the need for a web forum for WW1 modellers where models and modelling is the sole focus of the site.

So, a warm welcome to the  ww1aircraftmodelsforum. This forum will be a unique site dedicated solely to WW1 model aircraft. It is a forum that has been built by a modeller for modellers, We hope this will become your new home for discussing WW1 models and your participation is encouraged.

Feel free to discuss all aspects of WW1 aircraft models and show your work.

Now, please come in, make yourself comfortable and meet new and old friends in the new forum home for the exciting world of WW1 aircraft models……….

Well, this is grand and I want to wish you the very best on your new forum. I count it a privilege to be a member of this forum headed up by one of the leading Ambassadors for the builders and manufactures of WWI scale model aircraft. This is going to be fun and I will be expecting to see old and new friends here.

G'day Des,

Congratulations on the new forum!!
I've followed your site for quite a while and find it very, very inspiring. Your work, enthusiasm and explanations are great!

With all the rich experience of yourself and the growing number of forum members to inspire me (a relative newcomer to modelling) I might just get my Roden Fokker DR.1 project back up and running..... ::) ;)

Cheers and thanks,

Andrew

What a pleasant surprise. World War One modelers have never had it so good. I must build something new to establish some credibility on the street.

Congratulations on your new Forum. I'm glad to be part of it: thanks for the invitation! I've been chewing away at a few other projects recently, but the WNW SE surfaces every now and then, fixes me with a baleful glare, and dares me to start. One day, one day...!  ;D

I'm looking forwards to a great future seeing so many familiar friendly faces already here before me.  A great thanks to Stephen Lawhead for pointing the way from Aeroscale quite selflessly.

Greetings from the "Snowbelt"! I just found the forum and am looking forward to a long and productive relationship! I have already found much useful information for my projects. I am the duly "appointed " prez of a small but active modelling club in southwestern Ontario Canada and build mostly anything (ships, trucks, spacecraft) but mostly aircraft, and especially those darned biplanes with all the strings!

Good luck Des.

Carry on.

Hello friends of  WW1 history and modelling !
Some months ago I came into contact with Des through his website ( very well programmed it is!) and shared some photos
from german Museums with him.
I started kit building around the age of five in 1969 ( a Roland C II  Walfisch or an Albatross - moulded in red styrene - Airfix 1/72) and came back to the hobby in 2001.
But it was more than only modelling: it strung my historic string an therefore modelling and gaining historic knowledge
went hand in gloves.
My interest in military items comprises not only aircraft but weapon systems in general, politics and geopolitics.
I had and have the chance to meet soldiers from WW1 onwards to the present day ; this gives insight in real world occurences.
Kit building to me is a creative process. I like the aesthetics and the design especially with aircraft. I like to put in my abilities
and enjoy the progress of them. While enjoying the slowing-down-process during a kit built I also imagine the scenery and
context of the model.
Until now my one and only  WW1 aeroplane built is the Roden 1/32 Fokker Dr. I in the colours of M. v. Richthofen.

kind regards, Gunther

Hello from South Africa.

I joined yesterday and have spent most of the last day looking at the forums etc and all I can say is its great so much information and superb modelling.
Recently I decided to go back to WW1 aircraft modelling, something i started around 50 years ago in my youth. Back then it was 1/72nd.
I have looked at 1/48th but 1/32nds seems more suitable to these old eyes, currently working on the Roden DrI. I can see i will have a good many questions.

Was very pleased to see our locally preserved SE5a, I was involved with its restoration so will post some information in the appropriate place and will also post some photos of my efforts.

Best regards and glad to be on board

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the welcome. I did try and post some photos of my DRI but struck some p[problems which I will check out a little later.
Spent most of the day on the Roden big brother version, not sure where to stop with the detailing. 1/48th is still very much on the to build lists.

I checked all of the posts to make sure I had not introduced myself previously. I think my memory isn't what it used to be, but I'm not sure.

I got hooked on WWI models as a kid in the 1950s. Went on to other modeling subjects, then the Navy, marriage, jobs and kids took over. About fifteen years ago I googled scale modeling on a whim, and that, as they say, was that.

I've been a deep water sailor, wood cutter, stage production and sound lackey, old-school programmer, engineer, anthropologist, climber, and book addict, and author. Among other things not to be mentioned here.

I used to compete, mainly in California. I enjoy it because it improves my skills and teaches me that judging is subjective and not to be taken seriously. I have also judged a number of IPMS USA show competitions. I help out the IPMS National organization by reviewing models, books and related modeling do-dads from time to time.

I am reducing my little stash now, focusing on Wingnut Wings kits, a few select ship kits, especially American Civil War ironclads and submarines, and a Caldercraft wood model from Nelson's Navy. I have a very few "special" kits I am keeping that aren't WWI or Civil War but my goal is to get all of the Wingnuts Wings kits that interest me, and build them slowly with each one a bit better than the last.

I intend to bracket my Wingnuts Wings collection with the Fokkers: EI, EIII, E IV; D.VII (Fok), (Alb), (OAW) and F. And, of course, some other aircraft in between.

I am very glad to have found this forum. I was about to give up on the others I have visited from time to time. I see that it is informative, courteous and fun.

Howdy, I am fairly new to plastic modeling.  Flew RC for years and even built a 1/4 scale Albatros DVa.  I never got up the nerve to fly it.  Sold it to a friend who also decided not to fly it.  Last I heard it was on display it Oklahoma City.  I now live in the Texas Hill Country about 60 miles NW of San Antonio.  I have taken up building plastic WW1 planes again.  I have completed my all time favorite, the Albatros D.Va and a Fokker D.VII.  I have plans for three more (on order) and then we will have to see what comes up next.  Glad I found your forum and will be checking it out in the future.  I need to see what all is covered on your site.  Thanks for being there.

Thank you very much for the welcome! I hope to learn a lot from all of you!

I would like to publish my first work, do you have any suggestions on how to do it?

Regards!

Hello,
thank you for joining the group. I live in Poland. Aviation from the First World War is a new experience for me :)
