Title: Masking oil paints

Hi fellows,
 The question I have is whether I need to cover a section of plastic
 (painted in oil paints to simulate wood) with a clear coat,
either gloss or semi-gloss before I cover it with Tamiya masking tape?

Absolutely, Ernie.  Although, when masking a sensitive area, such as decals or oils, I like to first apply a couple coats of clear matte acrylic to reduce adhesion.  You can restore the sheen of wood grain later with a coat of gloss or semi-gloss.  Hope that helps.

I totally agree with what Bud has said, very very important to apply clear coats first.

Good advise here Ernie. On my first wood grain job I partially masked over the oil paint with Tamiya masking tape and when I removed it, you could see exactly where the tape had been.
