Title: ANSALDO SVA 5 - 1/48 Fly - Ten. Aldo Finzi
Post by: andonio64 on April 17, 2013, 08:43:51 PM
Hallo everybody,
I decided my next work: I received this from a French friend as a "Christmas Exchange GB", in exchange I sent him a Resin Ardpol Pomilio in 72.
The SVA5 was the plane with which I started my new modeling life but the kit was a dreadful SMER, this is a FLY and appears to be much better.

Usual preliminary pics:

Mine will be a SVA 5 belonging to the 87a squadriglia "la Serenissima", 1918.
I've chosen the center profile, the one with the white 3 on the green fin...
To be precise the green tail was no.5 (no.3 had a yellow tail scattered with red stars)
So I have to reproduce 4 white "5"s either as a decal or in some alternative way.
Any suggestion?

The decals look good, the print is neat and in good register. The colours according to my opinion are too bright.

The detail of the plastic pieces is fair enough, although the panel lines are not enough visible (they don't even appear in the picture).
I was also thinking about "riveting" the joint lines... but so far I don't remember any picture in which the rivets (or nails, better) are visible
The cockpit structure is molded on the inner side of the fuselage, I don't like it very much but I will check whether to leave it as it is or not.

Resin pieces appear good enough, except the Vickers MGs. I will use photoetched parts.
Anyone can suggest "ready made" Vickers MG of good quality in 48th?
The belts are molded on the seat cushion, but appear to have a good detail definition. Although I was thinking about a scratch built seat or a PE one, will see what to do looking at it after spraying some primer.

I have a lot of documentation from my last build and will use it all, along with the notes I took while studying and building the no.1 of the 87a Squad.

The S/N of the plane I chose is 11779, it was piloted by Lt. Aldo Finzi

The 3rd picture shows the no.5, closing up the fin: the colour shade is darker than the green band of the rudder so I will choose a darker shade of green.
Although this was not his personal plane he flew that plane over Vienna in the legendary raid led by the Italian nationalist poet Gabriele D'Annunzio in August 1918

Here is the correct profile:

OK that is all for now, thanks for your attention!

Antonio

======================================================================

PS here are some simplified notes on Ten. Aldo Finzi (Ten. = Tenente = Lieutenant)

Aldo Finzi Legnago, 20 april 1891 – Roma 24 march 1944

Aldo Finzi was of Jewish Origins, although he professed himself agnostic he educated his 7 sons according to Christian ideals.
In 1915 he was discarded by the recruiting commission because he had thoracic inadequacy, but he succeeded in getting into the Army to serve in WW1.
He started as dispatch rider on motorcycle, in 1916 he was transferred to Artillery Corps and then he became a pilot in the 48th Reconnoissance Squadriglia, equipped with Caudron G.3 / G.4.
He knew there Natale Palli who invited him late in 1917 to join the 87th Squadriglia "La serenissima" of which he was the commander dispatch rider.

After the war he got the degree in law and started his political career, he joined the Fascist Party in 1920 and took part in the March on Rome and was appointed vice-Commander in Chief of the Police, he also was elected deputy to the Italian parliament before the rise of the Fascists. But after few years he started indicating risks and problems of the dictatorship, then he wrote a report about some "special" action squad acting in illegality so he was set out of any governmental. He openly showed his ideas against racial laws. In the end he was sent to exile and lately (1943) he became a partisan. He acted as a dispatch rider again, but this time he was caught by the nazis and sent to prison.
On March 24th 1944 he was killed by order of Herbert Kappler, German Commander of the SS in occupied Rome, to the "Fosse Ardeatine" an open quarry where 335 persons, most of them civilian, were slain in that same day as an act of retaliation after a partisan attack to an SS Regiment in the city.

You've chosen a colourful scheme and I'm looking forward to seeing it take shape. As for the white '5's, I've always had good luck using dry transfers (Letraset etc.) on clear decal paper.

Cheers,

Chris

Thanks Chris, I was thinking about Letraset or similar, the problem is to find them in right font and size, do you have any suggestion where to buy?
Here I am afraid nobody uses that transfers anymore.
By the way d you think it's better to transfer them on the decal paper rather than directly on the model?

Antonio

PS
I _love_ your triplane building, the hair spray technique you used produced fantastic results

I'd suggest checking out model railroading sites or the railroading section of your local hobby shop if you have one. Sometimes office supply stores stock lettering too.

I always found it difficult to apply transfers directly on a model as there's no ability to tweak their position. When I apply it to decal paper and seal it, I can fumble around with it all I want . . . or need to.  ;D

Thanks for your kind comments on my Triplane.

Cheers,

Chris

  Antonio,
My old friend I'm truly looking forward to this latest project of yours. The Ansaldo SVA-5 is one of the most beautiful aircraft produced during WW I in my opinion. From your photos the Fly kit certainly does appear a far better kit than the old Smer kit. Best of luck with this new project.

I will try model railroading sites, I always used to purchase transfers from office / architect / engineer supplies shops in my youth when doing graphic work (fanzines and handouts to photocopy) when the computer was a word you could hear in the universities or in the sci-fi fictions, but now I noticed none of those shops is open still.

I always found it difficult to apply transfers directly on a model as there's no ability to tweak their position. When I apply it to decal paper and seal it, I can fumble around with it all I want . . . or need to.  ;D

Thanks for your kind comments on my Triplane.

If I'll find the transfers I'll try both ways and let you know. Thanks for your advice.

Hallo gents, I finally weighed anchor on thursday, national holiday here in Italy (as well as in AU & NZ) and, after spraying primer on all the pieces (white on wings and tail surfaces, gray on the rest of the pieces) I essentially worked on the fuselage external parts:

First of all the panel lines were totally wrong and I traced the correct lines with a brown pencil...

The inspection panels in the kit appear equals on both the fuselage sides while on the port side no photo I have in my documentation shows all of them, just the small one.
The vertical oval panel is just a sort of basis for an air intake which was only on the starboarrd side. It was removed on later SVA5 versions.

Checking the pieces on some drawings I found on the web (in 48th) I noticed that taking the cockpit opening as a pivot, the fuselage is longer than it should be.

I decided just to work on the tail because to work on the nose it would be such an heavy work... I should change too many things, to me is nearly impossible...

Here is the fuselage at an intermediate stage, you can see I re-traced the metal framework the SVA series had on the rearmost part of the fuselage (of course this was due to the heavy shortening of the fuselage itself)
The new panel lines here are traced with a scriber and the old ones were filled with putty as well as the wrong inspection openings on the port side.

I had to build the steps giving access to the cockpit because those on the kit were carved while in the real plane they were a sort of metal rimming to the step opening...
I used evergreen styrene tube (4 mm  O.D.) cut in thin rings (a) with a JLC combo saw with a 0.5 mm extender (2) and two parallel blades (1 & 3) .
I bought from UMM their 15 "Years Anniversary Saw Pack" which comes with 3 spare blades and a set of different extenders (0.5 - 1.5 - 2.5 and 2x1.0 mm). This was the first time I use it and I found it very useful and easy to use...

Here is how the two fuselage halves look just now. I have drilled holes for the rigging.
I also used 2 slices of the rubber coat of an electric wire to rim the holes in the rear part (exit point for wires commanding the rudder).

Let's go back to the workbench now!!!
Thanks for looking

Antonio

Thanks everybody,
I proceeded further with the cockpit wood work, IP and other details in the pit, once painted the resin seat reveals to be excellent, so the other resin pieces have sharp details and look well done.
I hope to get a bit forward tonight and tomorrow (Labour Day) so that I have some new pics to share.

Thanks again guys for following!

Thanks RAG & Bob,

here are some new pics from latest progresses:

wood grain in the cockpit.
I know the grain effect here is not the best, but as it will be hidden I preferred not to bother making realistic streaking between each of the inner struts.
I decided to leave the inner cockpit structure as it's molded on the fuselage in a very realistic way.

the propeller... here I "bothered" making the "realistic" woodgrain and I'm satisfied with the effect. ;-)

Front and back panels of the cockpit.
The oil pump on the front panel is scratch built because the original piece was eaten by the floor monster...  >-) THe tube is a 0,3 mm electric wire painted with rubber black.
The seat is really nice, the belts are molded on the cushion but the detail is so sharp.

Here is the seat fastened to the back panel.

Instrument panel (dials are hand painted) and fuel pump (pump handle was scratch built).

I hope tomorrow I'll assemble the cockpit and maybe close the fuselage...

Ciao

Thanks everybody,
in this weekend I completed the cockpit:

ruder pedals were rebuilt from scratch, those provided by the kit were totally wrong according to the historic photos
(http://www.andonio.it/model/sva5_2/026.jpg)

The gas lever as well... it was not in the kit
(http://www.andonio.it/model/sva5_2/027.jpg)

forst cockpit assembly
(http://www.andonio.it/model/sva5_2/028.jpg)

pedals and cloche added
(http://www.andonio.it/model/sva5_2/029.jpg)

I also prepared a study for rigging (only 8!!!!) and I draw new decals (partially reusing those done for the other SVA)

Tonight I added the tail rigging but I am afraid I will take them off because I realized after that the holes from where they come out will be covered by rh long flag so...

Good night everybody!!!

  Antonio,
I'm looking forward to seeing your next outstanding update my friend. I wonder if the kit is based on the example on display at the Italian Air Force Museum? I understand that it exhibit tale tell signs of post War modifications. Perhaps that the reason for the different rudder controls. Wouldn't it be something else if WNW produced a SVA 5 in 1/32 scale.

Thanks Gregory,
the kit provides you with the pieces to make the original early version and the one which is shown in the Vigna di Valle Italian Air Force Museum.
All in all the big difference between the original and the one of the museum is the metal cowling under the chin. (also the IP in the museum plane is totally different from the original)
The kit appears good enough and very close to the documentation I have.
The only big mistake is the fuselage dimension as I showed in an earlier post. The top wing tips are slightly different from the drawings, I'll show that when posting pics of the work I'll do on that piece.

Thanks again for looking

Antonio

Gregory actually I don't know how the rudder controls are in the museum plane, but the resin piece is a cylinder while the control bar is a flat log of wood in the uistorical pics.

Hi friends,
this is just to let you know I am not AWOL, just had some additional trouble in the family, but all in all we managed to sort out a possible solution.

In the meantime I went on woodgraining the vertical sides of the fuselage. I went on this way because there will be the need to put the decals on and to stick the tail rigging lines from the inside.
I left the horizontal surfaces unpainted so that when joining the halves it will be less harming to put the putty and sand it off.
I have no new pic at the moment, I packed the suitcase because with my wife tomorrow morning we'll leave to Paris for a 5 days holiday in occasion of my 49th birthday.

I know you'll hardly resist without my posts but hold on, I'll be back earlier than you imagine!

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Ciao

Happy birthday for yesterday, mate.  This is another aircraft I didn't know existed and I'm enjoying learning about it, via your build.  It's looking good, mate.

I wonder if WNW or Roden would consider doing one of these in 1/32?

Thanks Bo, here is some new work done:

Woodgrain painted on the vertical panels of the fuselage.

...oops an unexpected visitor wanted to check...
 ^_^

Waiting for the paint to dry I printed on paper the self made decals to see if their size fits.
I am reusing the design made for the other SVA I did a couple of years ago.

Before closing the fuselage I want to put the decals on, in particular I need to lay down the big flag and pierce it to let the tail planes / rudder control cables peep out from the fuselage.

The big flag decals provided by the kit are too big, also because I had to cut away a piece of the tail, but they also are too big with respect to the fuselage surface and on the port side they would cover the access steps to the cockpit, I didn't like the color either, too bright.

I fixed 2 thin plasticard rods on top of the top wing to make the guides holding in place the gravity tank.
The tank in the photo is just laid on the wing to check the distance between rails.

Some work is shown below: I needed to drill the pieces where control horns will go (I took them from a generic "PARTS" ww1 elements photoetched fret)

Rudder
(http://www.andonio.it/model/sva5_2/034.jpg)

Horizontal tail planes

Top wing

Left aileron
(http://www.andonio.it/model/sva5_2/036.jpg)

Right aileron
(http://www.andonio.it/model/sva5_2/037.jpg)

Yesterday night I started preshading the wing to enhance the ribs (using my usual India ink technique) before laying the CDL colour
(http://www.andonio.it/model/sva5_2/038.jpg)

That's all for now, things proceed smoothly enough so far.

Thanks for looking!

Hallo folks,
here is the state of the art:

I shaded the wings and the tail planes and removed the masking tape.
The red dots are tiny slices of electric wire coating (see zoom top left) I cut and glued to the wing to simulate the rim of the hole where the control cables come out
In yellow the masking tape for the roundels on the upper wing: I decided to apply the decals over the shading so that the shading itself will be visible from below. If I had painted the roundel place with CDL it would have dimmed the effect.
On the port lower wing (appearing on the right in the picture) there was one rib more (13) than on the starboard side (12)!  When I realized that I had nearly completed the work so I decided to leave it as it is...

Here are the lower surfaces. I left blank the reference points for the struts.

Here the CDL work is complete on the top surfaces...

and on the bottom ones

I left blank the surfaces where the tricolore (red / green) will be painted for the same reason I masked the decal places: the color has to show the shading.

This is a detail on the fin/rudder: same idea of leaving blank the parts where the fabric was overpainted with the tricolore.
The "white" stripe between red and green was not painted white but left in the raw fabric colour.

Next step is painting the red / green areas then print the decals and apply them to wings tail and fuselage.

Ciao

Antonio

Thank you Gregory, RagIII and everybody,

I can show here some more work done since last update:

Printed the home made decals:

First sheet is a "clear" one
(http://www.andonio.it/model/sva5_2/045.jpg)

and is a white sheet
(http://www.andonio.it/model/sva5_2/046.jpg)

I'll made my first try with the big flag painted on the fuselage printed on the clear sheet.
On my previous SVA 5 I used the white one and had to cut each of the pieces... really tiresome and I discovered I have a low level of cutting capabilities
:-)

The long "5" row outlined in green is a try  to get the white "5" on the fin and tailplanes, I wanted to cut them with a lancet.

Then I found these markers with white ink in a stationery shop:

Here are their tips:

On top the Pilot, below the Uniball Signo (which is nothing else than a gel ink Pen)

So I decided to try the, and I cut a clear "scotch" removable tape and paint the 5 with those markers.
Here are the terible results of some tries made on a black Plexiglas piece:

The arrow point at a try done with the Pilot marker on  a piece of clear decal sheet coated with transparent opaque finish, too liquid and uncontrollable...

The ink gel pen makes a thick mark on the surface where it writes, so that it appears as a relief mark so it can't work in my case.

So in the end I decided to let everything down and go by freehand: I fixed a printed paper sheet on the piece and tried to slightly carve the angle points with this iron point.

Then I joined the points and drew the 5 myself: this is an intermediate stage, I proceeded scratchimg off the green paint and letting the white primer coating appear from below
(http://www.andonio.it/model/sva5_2/052.jpg)

Then I touched it up paintting over with a off white colour.

This is the final result:
I am pretty satisfied with it

Here you can see the current state of the lower wings: painted and weathered
(http://www.andonio.it/model/sva5_2/054.jpg)

This is the work done on the upper wing:
Camouflage and preshading appearing on the roundels' spot

Roundels in place
(http://www.andonio.it/model/sva5_2/058.jpg)
the roundels were shiny and glossy, the colours were too bright, so I coated them with matt varnish and washed the surface with a _very_ diluted medium gray.

Detail of the gravity tank

Lower surface of the top wing.

That's all for today.

Thanks for stopping by!.

Antonio

PS what would you have done to paint the 5 on the tail surfaces?????

bello, anto'! ;)

really a nice work!
to paint the 5s, probably I would have used the 5s cut in the tape protecting the white base. after painting the final finish, I would have removed the tape. easy easy! ;)

Thanks again Paolo,
I think the best for me is to paint the basis in the marking colour, cut the shape with the scissors from masking tape, apply the shape and paint it over.

I've seen your D III and it's really astonishing, hats off!

Hello Antonio:

This is really a neat looking airplane.  I have seen this done before and it is such an impressive looking model when finished with all the wood work, the colorful wings etc.  In fact, I think yours was one I had seen before.  Anyway, you are doing a great job here and I look forward to seeing it as you progress.

Hallo everybody, thanks Mark and Zabu for following my WIP!
Here are some progress done during the weekend:

Decal work on the fuselage sides:

Rigging coming out of the fuselage were set in place and the two halves were closed:
I had to carve again the openings on the floor after sanding the joint

This is how th model looks like tonite...

In the pas days I studied how to create the anchor points where the rigging is attached on the wings and sketched a drawing of  the solution:

Then I prepared 24 bits of Nickel tube (Inner diam. 0.4 mm / Outer diam. 0.6 mm) each 3 mm long:

Next step will be to complete the upper surfaces of the fuselage, then fix the lower wings and tail planes.

I know the "Acqua / Glicerina" decal is too big... but that was the smaller size I was able to get from my Inkjet without smudging the letters.

Ciao!

Antonio

Hi folks!
Thanks everybody for looking and commenting...
I made some small advancements during the WE:

Thank you Mark,
here is some steps ahead made during this weekend:

I decided to made a new tail skid from scratch, the provided in the box (on the left in the pic) was unacceptable to me.
On the right is my tail skid, it's overall 1 cm long and the zoom was so high that the quality of the image turned out bad.
The skid will be painted and completed once glued below the fuselage: the metal piece fixing it to the metalworks on the tail is still missing.

Here is the radiator, I painted  with flat aluminum to make it come out of the dark background painted in Tamiya Burnt Iron.
I added the brass rim closing the hole in the metal grid opening around the prop hub and added the top water tank cork as well.

Top wooden panels and metal engine cowling were painted

Just a couple of shots of the IP just to remember the work done !

I decided to add the leather trim on the cockpit opening. I used a thin plastic pipe painted with vallejo leather colour

Goodnight everybody!

Thanks Zabu, here are some new progresses:
some time ago I took a coil out of an old phone, now it's time to use it.
The wire is as thin as a hair and I decided to use it for the eyelets of the turnbuckles I posted the drawings some days ago.
They're so small that it was difficult to photograph even using the "Macro" program of my camera. The tube chunks are 3 mm long. You see them better in this magnification pic. On one end is the eyelet done with the "electric hair", on the other end the same wire comes out of the tube and is glued to a Bob Buckle's eyelet that will be fixed to the model
(http://www.andonio.it/model/sva5_2/076.jpg)

Here you can see 4 of the 6 turnbuckles done this evening in the left box and the remainder of the tube chunks in the right one.
I need 8 of them and I just made 6 today. To make the first one it took me over 1 hour to understand where to put the drop of CA glue, much less time was spent on the other 4.

To check if this hair-sized wire would bring the strength of the stretched rigging I glued two turnbuckles on the plane's "cheeks" and stretched the EZ wire...
It seemed to work

Detail views here

OK that's all for today, I think I'll make new progresses until Saturday, then I will leave on Sunday morning for some vacations, will be back on Sept. 1st.

Ciao

Antonio

Hi folks,
this is another short update but to do these things it took nearly all day (well I did other things in between, not related to modeling...)

I completed the set of "single" turnbuckles (now I have 9 - I need 8)
and started making the "twin" turnbuckles (instead of doing two holes I thought that where it is possible having only one is better...)
Here they are (I have 9 - and I need 8)

Then as my eyes were not weary enough here is the "Aldis" style gunsight (still to be painted)

That's all folks!

Good night everybody

My eyes are better now, I returned from Bruxelles Saturday and dived into work quite fast, I hope next week to proceed further with this build.

In Bruxelles I went to see the WW1 aircraft exhibition in the Army / War museum but it was closed!!!!!!!! They are restoring the floor (perforated metal plates) which is breaking and therefore not safe for people to walk upon...

Dear all,
here I am with new progresses:

This is the current state of my model:

- I glued the turnbuckles to the lower wing
- the radiator was set to its place
Then I worked on the cabane:
- struts and corresponding rigging
- aldis gunsight (I didn't consider it when putting the cabane struts in place so there was not enough room to put the gun sight nearer to the windscreen... where it should be ... :'(
- MGs in place

Then I worked on the tail piece, glued the horizontal and vertical surfaces, set up the rigging, and glued the struts below the horizontal plans.
This was indeed the most fatiguing operation today, it was so difficult to take the EZ wire with the tweezers and slip it into the hole of the control horns...
 :o

Some more detailed views of the tail:

The windshield provided by the kit was totally unacceptable it was squared, so I copied the correct shape from a paper SVA model which had the correct windshield used by the 87th squadriglia onto an acetate foil using a thin marker, then cut it with the small scissors:

To give it a curved shape I fastened it in some way onto this slightly conic shape...

And heated with an hairdryer, then I left it cooling and the curved shape was kept:

Wiev from behind the cockpit with a rear-view mirror I made with a punch-and-die over a piece of cardboard which had one "mirror" side
(http://www.andonio.it/model/sva5_2/093.jpg)

Thanks for looking

Antonio

Thanks everybody guys, I enjoyed a lot last session, unfortunately I can't dedicate continuing time to the build.
Well next step will be placing the buckles beneath the upper wing and then setting it in place.

As you have noticed I often had problems in making the cabane struts and the height of the wing struts match, therefore this time i decided to follow a different process:

First of all I glued the cabane struts, then I will lay the upper wing on them holding it with a sort of jig you will see

Then I will not use the struts supplied with the kit  because they are a unique zig zag moulded piece.

I will cut apart the three pieces and set them in place starting from the outermost and if they will not be long enough I will build them from scratch.

Last thing will be rigging the wings.

Ciao

Antonio

Progresses slower than usual,
I succeeed in putting the upper wing in place using two jigs which costed about 15 Euro cent each...

:-D

then I glued the cabane struts while the coin piles were holding the wing at a correct distance.

I started fixing the rigging cables to the hand made buckles and eyelets, many of them broke because the electric wire was too thin.
When fixing the turnbuckle back to the undersurface of the wing (at direct contact with the plastic) they lost their movement to appear aligned with the other end and the final effect is not good (as you can see).

That is in any way a good experience becauseI tested my capability of doing such small things and also the scarce properties of the materials I used (I already imagined that but it was the thinnest wire I was able to find.
It was good for anchoring the EZ wire but was too weak to keep the buckle anchored to the plastic wing.

So yesterday evening I finished fixing all the inter-wing rigging and put in place the outmost struts (scratch built), then I scratch built also the middle struts which will go in place during this week.

I am confident next weekend I'll be able to build the undercarriage (pieces are already painted and weathered) and close the job by placing the propeller.

Below are some shots of the current state of the art:

Brilliant work, Antonio!  Once again, your coin jigs do the job.  She's really looking like an SVA5 now.
Cheers,
Bud

I must say that i realy enjoy your model Antonio.

It's perfect, very nice colours, wood and metal effect and nicely done rigging. All that in a beautiful scheme as that... it's a gorgeous model.

Belissimo.

Ciao

Rick, my wife is OK now she's at home and taking therapy recovering constantly and walking a lot, in the evening we have such long walks together as we stopped doing since years...
Moreover she stooped smoking and this is another positive side effect!

Thanks

Antonio

Antonio, I must confess I didn't realise that your good wife was poorly.  It is happy news that
things are going better for her...and you.  Walks together are good - enjoy them!  My best wishes
to you both for the future. :)

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Ladies and Gentlemen, here is the long awaited SVA 5 finally completed !

Here we go with the walkaround:

Some of you may already know, this is my second SVA5, and both the models were dedicated to the "87a Squadriglia aereoplani da caccia". Those daring pilots who in August 1918 flew to Vienna and back to Italy dropping propaganda leaflets and not bombs.

So I dedicated a unique base to Ten. Giordano Bruno Granzarolo (White tail - n.1) and Ten. Aldo FIlzi (Green tail - n.5)

Here they go in a comparison: the n.1 was a 1/50 SMER kit (dreadful) and this is the FLY kit (very good)!

OK now that's really all.

Thanks everybody for the patience and the continuous encouragement and support in good and bad times!

Love to you all

Antonio

What stunning models, Antonio!  The camouflage on the wings is really different...and
wonderful!  You really have out-done yourself, my friend!  Your build log was very
entertaining and informative.  Thank you so much for sharing, and I hope you will
have a new project for us before too long. :)

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Congrats for your SVA Antonio.

Quite a beatiful piece of model. The scheme it's amazing and very appealing. The modes look great together.

If mine 1/72 turns out half as good, i'll be a happy man.

Cheers.
