Title: French Airfield Truck / Conversion Project
Post by: GAJouette on April 01, 2013, 03:10:48 AM
  Greetings All,
Since I've recently brought over my RNAS Ambulance project I thought it would be a good time bring over the project done before the Rolls Royce. This project was also intended to be part of a diorama as well. The diorama was to set in the early years of the Great War and to include a SPAD A-2 and possibly a second  aircraft as well. The SPAD A-2 was to be scratch built in plastic using a card kit as its basis . The A-2 was actually started and progressed as far as the fuselage when I discovered the shape was completely wrong thanks to finding much better drawings. The  second fighter if I had decided to go ahead with it would have been a Dufaux C.2 also based on a card kit.

While neither of the aircraft left the ground so to speak,I did complete the conversion of a 1907 Renault Landaulet into a French Airfield Truck. The Truck conversion was based of the Minicraft repop of the Revell Highway Pioneer's 1907 Renault Landaulet. The kit had the base shape I wanted but very little else in the way of detail. These missing details were scratch built using the Pyro 1906 Renault Towne Car as a guide.

So on with the photos of the conversion. As always any and all comments are welcomed and appreciated. Thanks for taking a look and I hope you'll enjoy and maybe try a project such as this on sometime.

Task #1 Surgery time, cutting up the donor kit.  Removed the molded on cab from the frame.

Hmm, after the Ambulance project I'm really looking forward to seeing where this ones headed - plus I actually managed to get hold of one of these kits the other day, and could use some inspiration as to what might be possible with it??

The underside view, note the lack of detail for the underside of the engine.
Based on the Pyro I could see that the underside of the engine was completely shrouded so I build up the shroud. This was done in multiple pieces to match the shape.
The shroud frame was then covered in plastic stock

Shroud in place on the underside.

  Andi,
I'm glad you got a hold of one of these great old kits my friend. As for inspiration for your kit it's wide open, with your kit in hand you could nearly convert it any vehicle that catches your imagination. Finding drawing isn't always the easiest task but there are plenty of photos around the web to inspire you. I hope you'll give a conversion a go my friend.

The vehicle in the background is what would become the Rolls Royce Ambulance.

Well that's all for my Renault project. I hope to have inspired a few to try the same sort of project of their own and I hope all have enjoyed this project.

Gregory,
Still as inspiring as it was back when you did the work! If I ever get to a normal human schedule I would like to try some diorama ideas.

   Steve,
Thank you very much my old friend. I hope I've in a small way inspired you and others to give one of these WW I vehicles a go. I'd love to see what you could do with a Airfix or Pyro Ford Model T. There's a multitude of possiblities.

Wonderful, clean scratchbuilding. What sources do you use for references? I've not seen much on WW1 vehicles.

Another blast from the not too distant past!  I love this one as much as your ambulance, my old friend.  I agree with the other's.  You are an extraordinary scratch builder.  This build actually sent me to Google in search of an old Revell Renault kit, even though I don't build in 1/32 scale (yet).  I really hope you will finish that diorama.  I've been looking forward to it ever since you first gave birth to this project.
Cheers,
Bud

Fantastic work! Thanks for posting this, very interesting to see how it's been created.

And I'll second what Bud said- would be great to see this in a completed diorama one day!
