Title: Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter
Post by: SimonCornes on May 12, 2023, 09:25:17 PM
I’m at the RAFM Cosford taking photos of their replica A.8226. If anyone wants any detail photos please sing out in the next half hour or so and I’ll try to get. Can email to you later!

Just seen this Simon, maybe too late now, but if you have any shots down into the observer/gunner's office I'd certainly appreciate you posting them here.
I'm just about to close up the fuselage in my 1/32 Roden model and would like to check if it looks OK!
Thanks
Sandy

Sandy
I just did a bit of grovelling and they let me go over the barrier and I’ve taken 5 or 6 photos. I don’t have a photo sharing account but I will happily email them to you if you could message me your address? Don’t forget that this is a replica so I don’t know if it’s 100% accurate in the back office?
Cheers
Simon

This couldn't have come at a better time as I'm just at the stage of closing up. I've been holding off while I trawl through all my sources for exactly these views!
Brilliant offer of help Simon.
Thanks again
Sandy

Right Sandy - and Patrick also - I've sent you what I snapped today. As you can see, it's a forward facing seat so not a lot of use for a gunner - unless he could shoot over his shoulder! But the rest of the internal structure is there so conclusions can be drawn I'm sure. Patrick, I included all the external shots I took as well but focusing on detail rather than the airframe as a whole. If either of you guys have the facility to upload those photos to this site so that others can see them then that's fine by me! I gave the RAF Museum a £5 donation for the kindness of the lady who allowed me to go over the 'ropes' - I'd already given the shop a dozen plus magazines to sell on today so the RAFM have done quite well out of me today! (And the coffee and carrot cake was good to!)

Simon, you are a superstar!!
I was kinda stopped at that point wondering whether to go with some framework, rigging and flooring when you made your kind offer and solved my dilemma completely. Looks like I could do with an antenna-type drum, but otherwise mostly reasonably likely for a real 1916 machine.
I don't use hosting s/w so can't link but can post Simon's pictures as attachments if the other recipients don't host either.
Once again Simon, my appreciation and gratitude.
Sandy

My pleasure Sandy, I’m the one normally benefiting from help from other people so it’s good to give something back!

Simon's pictures

Wow - look at that roundel showing through on the inside: I hadn't thought of that!
Rear seat would normally be a circular leather pad.
