Title: WNW 1/32 Fokker D.VII Bruno Loerzer
Post by: macsporran on May 03, 2023, 02:14:55 AM
So after all the Special Hobby and Roden kits, I thought I deserved a treat and would build a Wingnut - but which one?

Idling through the Interweb I happened across a build of a rather striking Fokker D.VII flown by Bruno Loerzer - and checking the stash I appeared to have the same kit, all ready and waiting. Being a bit lazy it appealed to me that the online build showed decals for the fiddly fuselage black bands (and I didn't bother to check my kit or external refs, I just wanted a straightforward oob build from the Wingnut instruction book.)

All the options chosen, internals prepped, installed, painted and we get to the closing up of the fuselage and start to contemplate the main colours. ... but where are the fuselage decals? I check and recheck ... and it hits me that this is a different aeroplane from the one in the youTube build!!
Then I did what I should have done at the start and checked all my refs. Doh! the internet build was a D.VIIF using the extra Fighting Fokkers part 5 decal set. I had sallied forth on the D.VII (Fok) Early kit offering another Loerzer machine as option 5 on its included decal set.
Aaargh, rather than just applying some decals to my white model I was going to have to mask the whole damn thing and recalculate much of what I was doing. That'll teach me not to skip on the essential pre-model research and prep.

Oh well, some weeks later and  my Early Fokker is completed. I didn't have a Loerzer figure but thought the excellent Model Cellar Eduard Ritter von Scheich would do nicely in the meantime.

Apologies for the crap phone pictures. (I have an ancient Sony and must replace it soon, or get that SLR working again!)
If you have been, thanks for reading thus far!

Excellent DVII Sandy! I love the scheme and am surprised we don't see this one done more often!

A tale I can relate to more than I care to admit Sandy, but I'm glad you stuck with your plan as you've got a very eye-catching model. Lovely work and the figure is gorgeous.

I love the scheme and am surprised we don't see this one done more often!
The idea of lining up all those decals - or *shudders* masking them all - certainly puts me off, although it is such a striking and appealing scheme!

Sandy that is absolutely brilliant! Masking parallel bands makes me run for cover and choose a different scheme because even tiny errors are so obvious. Yours are just perfect and make the model look so striking, nice figure painting too. All this from a man who was having eye trouble not so long ago.

I'm going back to look at the pictures again!

Brilliant work on your WNW DVII, Sandy -

Love the chosen scheme which must have been demanding to pull off.

Regards

Dave

Excellent D-VII Sandy. I agree with the others, masking all those parallel lines is a feat all of its own.
Well done.
