Title: KP DH5 1/72
Post by: DaddyO on March 24, 2023, 10:14:12 PM
Completed this one at last  ;D

A full build thread was posted on Britmodeller for those interested, but briefly it's not a great kit IMO and had a lot of work to bring it to completion such as thinning the wings, replacing all the struts with soldered brass, various details added or replaced and a completely new set of decals.

That said I've really learnt a lot during the build process which started back on December 2nd and it's nice to have a PC10 coloured model to add to the collection (even if it shows up every spec of dust) ::)

Last image is of the instrument panel which I was delighted with, but it's impossible to see in the finished model  :-\

Cheers for now
Paul

Not a great kit maybe but definitely a brilliant completed model.

 ;D Guilty as charged sir

Not a great kit maybe but definitely a brilliant completed model.

Richie

Thanks Ritchie.  :)
Nice to wrap it up at last (I have been working on another more 'interesting' shape in the later stages of this build so that should be appearing soon . . . .) ;)

I never liked the back stagger of the DH.5 but your model looks very good Paul!
And I love PC.10  :D

Thanks matey - not a model I would normally have a go at, but the backward stagger does give it a certain appeal and whilst not colourful it stands out because of this.  ;)

Nicely done.  I finished one a few months ago.  I consider these kits a starting point and one can add as much detail as one sees fit.

I'd agree with that about them being a starting point (I'd rather have the Pegasus version to start from though)  ;)

Wonderful! I always wanted a DH 5 in 1:32 scale.

Superb job! And I sympathize with the cockpit arrangement, all the bits up front are hidden on mine too!

I've been holding it at all sorts of angles to try and see in the cockpit, but no luck. On the plus side you have a great view of the seat and tank behind so swings and roundabouts  ;D

That looks really good. Do not see too many examples of the D H 5 built - an interesting shape to have in your collection - even if it does show the dust!

Stephen.

That panel is exquisite!! Bravo on a very well done kit that betrays nothing of the issues you had with the build.

The sole extant full-scale representative example of the type - a flat four-powered replica - is flying here in NZ painted in the NSW Women;s Battleplane scheme, and mine is being done as that but I don't believe my finish will be as fine as yours. Well done!

Wonderful job!  Nice to see another DH5 build.  Mine was a challenge in 1/48, seems like more of challenge in 1/72.  I like the unusual looks of the DH5, makes it unique and stand out from the rest.

I've got a couple of DH2 kits for when I'm feeling really brave  ;D

Cheers Zac - appreciate it. I did wonder about one of the 'supported' schemes, but chose this one in the end because I couldn't quite figure out how the aileron pulley system looked on the top wing  ??? ;)

Thanks BSM I'm certainly drawn to the unusual looks; in fact one of the great appeals of early aircraft is the wide variety of shapes which was part of the reason for choosing 1/72 which offers a huge range of choices  8)

Beautiful work Paul. Any trouble the kit may have offered is not evident with the quality of your build.

A very beautiful model of a not quite so beautiful prototype!

I like

to thin the wings from the underside
metal struts to combine scale and strength
the assembly jig

I do not like

the lacing lines

well, I do not like that the Archer stuff, unknown to me, is no longer available,
because the lacing on your model is the best I have seen in that scale!!

Greetings Joachim

Cheers Joachim - That's very kind of you to say

As far as I am aware the Archer decals are still available (listed on the Historex site  https://historexagents.com/#AR88035) The ones I used are the double row of rivets (I rather indulgently bought a few sets and tried them out and found that these gave the best impression in this scale; if you look really closely you can see what they are, but under a few coats of paint they give a nice impression of the typical lacing seen on British aircraft. It's a bit easier to see on this shot

Hi Paul,

thank you for the Historex link!
They still have  AR88035  Tank car double-row rivets O scale.
Is that what you used, O scale seems way too large to me?

Hi Joachim
The ones I used are the AR88022 (Double row, various scales)  :)

Very nicely done Paul! I have it in mind to tackle one of these kits one day and build an Australian Flying Corps machine. She's such an odd looking little aeroplane (which appeals to me no end!).

I also like the base that you have made for this one too :)

Cheers,

BC

Thanks Brad  :)

Certainly the slightly 'odd' appearance is the main appeal for me. One of the great joys of this period is the wide range of shapes that abound as designers sought to find the best solution. Next one is another quirky design (currently needing a bit of repainting/touch up before final finishing) and another of KP's offerings a. . . .
