I read that the call signs of the F-22 pilots involved in the Chinese balloon shootdown were Frank 01 and Frank 02.
-
Air Force confirmed that the reference was intentional. First kill for the F-22 BTW.

An AF fighter pilot friend has confirmed that the call signs are indeed a reference to Frank Luke, known for his balloon busting achievements. Nice call, an interesting that this current story reaches back to WWI and pops up on our forum!
Best regards,
Bob

I wasn’t aware that Imperial Germany only used Drachens for Weather forecast :o :)

I didn't realise the callsigns, how awesome! Bravo to those involved!

As a millennial AND avgeek I appreciate this and will be using it(with credit) on Facebook and Twitter! ;D

I was wondering when the Frank Luke references would start, glad to see the USAF beat everyone to the punch.
Oh, and yeah, I'm so stealing that Frank Luke image for use on the Facing Book. :)

Sidewinder missiles cost $500,000 each and it took two to shoot down the balloon over Lake Huron because the first one missed. I think it is time to bring back Le Prieur rockets. :D
