Title: Continuing my WW2 bent - 1/48 Eduard Bf-109E-1
Post by: Brad Cancian on January 22, 2023, 06:21:02 PM
Hi everyone - After completing my 1/48 Airfix Hurricane, I seem to be on a bit of a WW2 bent, which is most unusual for me!

Capitalising on my WW2 modelling mojo, I started the 1/48 Eduard Bf-109E-1 a few days ago as a companion to my Hurricane; it's the weekend edition with the addition of the Eduard etched fret. I know little about early 109s so I am pretty much following the colour callouts and instructions in the kit. The interior and gear is done (save a little bit of weathering to come); I used the etched belts, trim chain and instrument panel (not sure I love the pre-printed parts but here we are).

This looks like it's going to come together quickly and be a real treat to build...!

Thanks for looking; feedback always welcomed!

Cheers,

Looking really good! It's a very nice kit, isn't it?

If you want to change one thing, you could take the oxygen bottle off and shorten it a little, say equal to two rows of holes. But, it probably isn't very visible later on anyway, so why bother?! 🙂

Great work so far. I can never get those Eduard pre-printed belts to bend very much without the "printing" flaking off. :(

Outstanding start Brad...But then that is what we always see from you! Lovely paint work. Having built two of the Eduard 1/32nd version this looks to be just as good as it's bigger brother!

Very nice work. Subtle weathering really makes it pop! Looks like the start of a 1/48th BoB collection.

Thanks all for your very kind words!

Indeed this one is coming together quite quickly. Fit is quite good, save a few little spots under the nose and lower wing at the rear fuselage point, but nothing serious. The fit is a testament to Eduard's engineering (I certainly tried my best to muck it up here and there, but thankfully nothing too serious). I went with the closed cowl option, which needed some trimming and fettling here and there. Thankfully Eduard warn you that this is needed in the instructions.

I found some time this weekend to get her primed. No real areas needing any serious clean-up which is always nice.

The surface detail is simply exquisite. It certainly pops out under a coat of primer.

I am looking forward to getting some colour coats on her soon, time permitting.

Cheers again,

Brad C

Looking good Brad  :)
Question re primer - what did you use? did you thin it (if you hand brushed it)?

Hi Andrew - Mr Surfacer 1000 is what I use (I just noticed the model is sitting on the jar so you can see what it looks like). I airbrush it but you could use lacquer thinner if you wanted to brush paint. I'd suggest that you might need to thin it down a bit and apply it lightly; lacquers are 'hot' meaning that they react slightly with the plastic surface. If you apply it too thick it might have an adverse effect.

Cheers,

BC

Proof of modelling life... as seems to be the case these last few years, work has put a real crimp on modelling progress. None the less, I now have some paint on the '109.

I have chosen to model an aicraft from 1/JG.26, March 1940, from the AeroMaster sheet 48-110. This sheet is nearly 30 years old now, so no doubt there are errors, but I am no 109 'experten' so I am going with what the sheet says for the markings. Again I am using SMS acrylic lacquers as my new 'go to' paint for finishes. The SMS versions of RLM02 and RLM71 are very 'green', so I added an overspray of thinned brown to redden things up a bit to suit my eye. Everything you see so far is paint, including the national markings and aircraft number (made from home made masks... they are not perfectly painted, but I didn't want decals to hide the nice surface details on the kit). Stencils and other markings will be from the decal sheet.

Next up is a clear coat, then decals, after which I can start some weathering. I am hoping to have this one dusted in the next few weeks (optimistic, but here we are...!)

Cheers,

BC

Wow! Big progress. That looks great. The spinner is RLM25?

Thanks Steve!

The green on the spinner is a home made mix, mainly to try and match the green of the grasshopper that will emblazon the side of the fuselage. As per the below, there are some uncertainties on elements of the markings of this particular aircraft, so I am taking some liberties here and there :)

Overall, this is an excellent kit which goes together nicely (so nicely in fact that I am tempted to start another one!). Apologies for the poor photography (my camera is also pushing 20 years old…).

Thanks to all for looking!

Cheers, Brad

A great looking BOF vet! Wngsy makes great early 109's if you're interested in a different one.
