I told Zac I would try to do a build log on the Airfix 1/72nd New Tool Do 17z. Having received the kit today I figured I would do My best to fulfill that intent. The kit looks to be quite well done with recessed panel lines and fairly good interior details. In typical RAGIII style there are always 2 8) So I am adding My WIP of the Me110 by Eduard. This was a Profi kit so has some nice PE instrument panels and other details. IN particular the Masks for the canopy were awesome. I will add photos as I can.

A couple of my favourite subjects - looking forward to seeing your progress, Rick.

Good to see you building something Rick. The finish on the 110 looks the business.
I will be interested to see the Do 17: I well remember building the old too Do 215 decades ago: this will be in an altogether different league.
Stephen.

Great box art on the Do 17 kit!

Lovely work on the 110, RAGman, and I'm excited to follow along with your Dornier!
-
Looking forward to this Rick! I fell in love with the Do-17Z as a kid from building the old Monogram 1/72nd scale kit. I bought one of these second had with some p/e thrown in and it sits in the stash for "one day". I have seen anyone else's build of this, so I'm looking forward to yours.

Thanks for All of the replies Guys! I should have an update on the 110 soon. The Do 17 really looks great in the box. I well remember How Terrific those of us Old enough to remember, thought the Old Monogram kit was! This one is far more detailed to say the least! One thing I will look for is a set of Canopy Masks!!!

Here is the latest on the 110. Both upper colors applied, RLM 70 and 71. Tamiya, and Humbrol with some Polyscale worked in.

Good progress on the 110 Rick. The box art on the Dornier 17 kit is fantastic, Airfix were always great at providing a dramatic scene to capture the imagination. I'm looking forward to seeing it underway.

Rick,
Beautiful progress on the 110 so far. I'd say a canopy mask is called for there, but for the Dornier I'd say it's a must! (I can well remember trying to paint that as a kid, and trying to scrape off my splooges with a toothpick.

The 110 is looking fantastic, this is going to be such a great collection of BoB aircraft. Nice to see the Do17 underway. Ooh I just had a thought, did you have a Walrus on your list? It's great to see you kicking back and having so much fun with this project.
I'll take this opportunity to wish you a Happy New Year Rick!

Thanks Richie. I am indeed having fun with this project! It is sort of Funny that the List of Aircraft that "Could" be included is growing Much Larger than My wallet ;D I realized the other Day that the Early Model Fw 200 actually flew at least one bombing mission over England during the Battle ::) That being said the next ones I need are the Hurri , Spitfire 1b, and Stuka.
To you and all Forum Members and Guests, Happy New Year!

Haha, the FW200 causes space issues too. I suspect the Whitley may have been used for night raids on ports too. Such an ugly kite, not sure I would ever want to build one!

Yeah, the space could become a problem but not for quite a while. I am just amazed at how Many Aircraft "Could" be included 8) So just a Very small update: The 110 is on it's legs!

Great work Rick! Very nice looking Bf 110. The 1/48 from Eduard was one of my very first models after returning to the hobby - maybe it's time to build a new one?!

Thanks Steve and Warren! Today I did a bit of work on the DO17. Step 1 through 6 are dealing with just a couple of interior sections. Step 1 and two involve some parts that fit well but are delicate frames....and TINY ::) That being said I have made it past those steps and the rest looks to be straight forward, or so I hope!

Some are wanting a report on build specifics . In retrospect I wouldn't pre - paint any of the seat and frame parts as they can be easily painted after assembly. ( Steps 1-4)

This will be the last update for a few days. I am now at the point that the instructions say to join the fuselage halves together. I must say that things weren't quite as "Straightforward" as I had hoped. This had nothing to do with the kit. I found myself doubting how things were lining up. After a couple of fixes, I went back and did it the way the instructions said. That worked just fine! It was the odd angles of the fuselage that kept fooling me ::) Before joining the fuselage I will go back, touch up, and do some oil washes and dry brushing.

Well done Rick, the cockpit details of the Dornier must be very fiddly after working in 1/32 so much. I find 1/72 very challenging for this exact reason. Looks like you have managed really well though.Hope you sleep better tonight, I often go to the bench too when I can't sleep.

Thanks Richie! The details are really well done for the scale. I think they rival Eduard in that respect! If I were Twenty years younger with great eyesight I would say that Super Detailing this one would be easy! I will most likely add some seatbelts from tape or paper and call it good ::) Soon there will be a break in progress as I need to order Masks for the Canopies and wait for their arrival!!

PS: I was surprised by how Small the DO 17 is. It is not that much larger overall than the Me 110!

Lovely start RAGman! It really is surprising to see the size of these two. That's one thing I found helpful about models as a kid, strangely enough.

Steve
Thanks Steve, the size is truly a far cry from those B-17 and B24 bombers. I will eventually have to compare it to something like the A20. The more I do on this one, the more I am impressed By the approach that Airfix took on many of the parts.
RAGIII

Thanks Zac. Yes, I think we all learned from comparing constant scale aircraft kits. I have continued to work on this one today. I really like the optional parts offered for flaps, gear doors, and bomb bay door. Some great options available.

Wow, the size comparison between the Do 17 and 110 is surprising to me. I hadn't realised how small the Dornier was. It's starting to look the part already. The new Airfix kits are so well designed and manufactured. A far cry from the kits many of us started the hobby with many years ago. I have a Heinkel 111 in the stash somewhere, it came as part of a BoB boxing of 4 kits I found in a charity shop for peanuts. This thread is inspiring me to dig it out

Richie
Thanks Richie. It grew a bit once I added the tail feathers and started on the engine nacelles. That being said it is still quite Petit for a WW2 Bomber 8) Today I hope to finish up the engines and get it ready for painting. I still need to order the canopy masks as I have found I just can't do it on my own in this scale!
RAGIII
-
The engines and Nacelles/ cowlings are now assembled. If you plan to build this kit I found this to be the Most Tricky part of the build as for fit! Use Caution and be ready for a Small amount of trimming! I am using the gear door and bomb bay covers intended for the closed up in flight version as masks for the painting process. Once painted I will work on the landing gear and bomb load, then apply the open doors.

Thanks Steve. I found that I had to alter the construction sequence a bit. I had to separate the cowl halves to get them over the engine assembly and seated properly. Catching up Rick after the holiday break. You have really made excellent progress with both the Dornier and Bf 110. Your 110 is beginning to look like I wanted my models to look when I was a teenager...but I never got anywhere near as good a finish as you. I still struggle with paint even now!
The One True Scale has many advantages and when a modeller is accustomed to working in it can offer many challenges for detailing. However good eyesight is a requirement: I am indeed fortunate to have good eyesight and I expect years of experience also helps.
Stephen.

Thanks Warren. Today I had a Major Setback with the Do17. I was looking into perhaps attempting My own masking on the canopies. I couldn't find one of the parts in My kit box. A search found the part on the carpet, stepped on and crushed. So now I have to find out how to request another clear sprue, find a vac form replacement, or hope somebody screwed up the kit and has the canopy piece in their spares >:(

Thanks for commenting Andreas and Brad!
The 110 had its antenna mast relocated to the proper position ( yep I screwed up originally) and the wire added. The DO17 is progressing although I still haven't resolved the broken/crushed canopy part on the fuselage side. I glued the parts in place with white glue for the painting process. The other canopy parts are masked with an Eduard mask set. A bit of pre shading overpainted with My RLM 65 mix using Tamiya paints.

The 110 looks superb Rick! Good to see you working on multiple builds, and BoB is an excellent theme. I, too, have detoured a bit into WWII builds recently, although in 1/48 (although I pop back to 1/32 WWI now and again). I wonder how many folks here build in multiple genre?
I hope you’re having fun with these, which is the whole point. Enjoy yourself, and we’ll look forward to more of your inspiring work, whatever the subject! Well done.

That looks great!! Looking forward to your Hurricane build. Shame Airfix never followed up the fabric wing Hurricane with a metal version.

Fantastic builds Rick. Really enjoying your BoB birds.

Thanks! Yeah, an Airfix Metal Wing Hurri would be great. That being said I would like to do a 43 or 56 ragwing later on!

Thanks Steve, and Yes, Light weathering. Looking at photos I am not seeing much in the way of chipping or heavy exhaust staining.

Thanks Ken. The RLM 70 and 71 are Testors Model Master Enamels. ( I found I still had them hidden away in a box). The RLM 65 is mostly my Tamiya Mixture supplemented with some Humbrol RLM 65.

The Dornier is looking great Rick, looks like you ate having a lot of fun with this BOB project.
The Hasegawa Hurricane looks interesting. Since reading Larry Forrester's Fly For Your Life some 50 years ago, Bob Stanford Tuck has been a big hero of mine. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing you tackle his Hurricane. If you haven't read the book I highly recommend it.

Thanks Richie! I think one more session on the Do 17 will do it for now. I can't really totally finish it without a replacement for the clear part E5! The Hasegawa Hurri is fairly good although I think Arma would be the Best Bet for Details. They Make one that comes with the whole package including canopy masks. I haven't read that book but as I have the Aeromaster Markings also I probably will do that scheme.

Next to last DO17 photo.

Thanks Warren! I am beginning to think My only way forward would be buying a second kit and hoping I can find someone in the States to vac form it for Me. Then at least I wouldn't be wasting a second kit!

Falcon does canopy set #9. It's for the Frog kit but may fit. At least you will have some other canopies for other types. Hannants has it for the equivalent of about $15US plus shipping - still less than a second kit.
Steve

They look terrific together Rick, lovely work so far!

Lookin' good Amigo !

Looking very good Rick. Best of luck with the canopy - that must be very frustrating not being able to finish the model.
Stephen.

Thanks for the info Steve. Squadron also has/ had one individually for the Revell kit. I thought I had one of those lined up but that fell through.

Thanks Stephen. It is a bit frustrating, but I will hopefully sort it out eventually. That being said these are the last photos for Now. As finished as it can be:

Great results! BTW, in case you didn't see the message I sent, I received the Phantom kit and decals in perfect condition. Thank you.

Ignoring the canopy I can honestly say I have never seen a better finished example of this type. I would have been over the moon if I had made one so fine!

The Happy Ending for the Do17z. After about a month and a half I sent another E Mail to Airfix Spares . Two answers saying they didn't have the part then a third saying it was shipped on March 3rd . It arrived two days ago and the Model is now officially finished:

Try smuggling some models in with the groceries and tell your wife that they must have fallen from the shelf as you passed by...!

Thank Dave! I did make one change to the Stuka after the photo. I had lost the leading edge wing light clear part. The photo shows white glue filled in. I didn't like the results so tried something else. The clear plastic provided to cover and protect pointed paint brushes works great when cut to size.

Thanks Stephen. Funny thing here. In the late 80's and early 90's I worked at a Hobby Shop. I used to take an Empty Model Box, ie. a Monogram B-17, to work with Me. My reason being to show the guys 8) When I came home it May have been a bit more full ::)

That's a lovely little Gladiator. You BoB project is growing quickly and the models are beautiful. I saw a fantastic program on YouTube all about September 15th 1940 today. I think you would enjoy it if you haven't seen it already.

I think the Gladiator was the best looking of all the late biplanes - graceful and balanced. You have really captured the look with that model - and the camouflage looks just right to my eyes. (At last an aeroplane with some rigging too!)

and one more of the Gladiator: I plan to re-do the antenna wire....someday!

Thanks Andreas! Yes there were a couple of Squadrons still equipped with the Gladiator during the BoB. They didn't play a significant role but were around. I might do a Sea Gladiator someday also. One of those from Coastal Command actually shot down a German Bomber as late as November 1940.
