Title: Fun Building Bombs
Post by: PJ Fisher on December 11, 2022, 11:32:19 AM
So my brother, who recently quietly joined the forum, bought a 3D printer and we've begun collaborating on some home-made WWI projects. He's pretty adept at rendering things on Autodesk Fusion 360. I'm slow to learn. Frustrating stuff.  Starting to understand the basics through a few simple designs... bombs! My goal is to complete one of each type of British bomb, first in 1/72, then scale up with greater detail in 1/48 and 1/32nd, etc. So far we've sketched out the 20lb Cooper and Hale; the 65lb, 100lb, and 112lb H.E.R.L.'s; the 230 and 520 pounders; the big 1650lb S.N.; and an 18in aerial torpedo.  Here's our work so far:

(https://i.imgur.com/q0zpiyEm.png). (https://i.imgur.com/HjApW06m.png). (https://i.imgur.com/bhEeXX6m.png).(https://i.imgur.com/MlVoYLbm.png). (https://i.imgur.com/J0yxbsMm.png). (https://i.imgur.com/4dZc05sm.png). (https://i.imgur.com/aezmzyJm.png). (https://i.imgur.com/0IknqfLm.png). (https://i.imgur.com/ddkHjNXm.png)

We've just completed the Cooper bomb (capped and uncapped) and Hale bomb.  These things are tiny but the detail is crisp! The image with the mechanical pencil gives a sense of size for 1/72 scale:

More tinkering needed on the rest but we should have these sorted out over the holidays.  Then full time on to our first airplane collaboration!

I find that very interesting! Any idea how those 50lb bombs looked like that were used with the Tondern raid?

I don't know much about that raid but i think it was flown by Sopwith Camels?  I think Camels typically carry standard Coopers. But if there's a 50 pounder out there I'd love to see it too.

Hey, thanks for the feedback. By brother and I finished detailing the 520lb bomb and torpedo today.  Looking forward to seeing how those print out.

Very interesting and marketable.

Now there's a thought! Once we're done tinkering I suppose we could print them all as a mini arsenal for sale!

Machine guns next?

That is definitely beyond my skill set! But not a bad idea... though those Mini World brass ones are already pretty perfect.  We've actually picked out a British two-seater that's never been produced in kit form ever, so that will be next on the assembly line.

Thank you.  Here's a hint: it's a radial-powered, double-cambered, swept-wing sesquiplane.  A free round of 1/72nd-scale British bombs to the first person who can identify it!

Ok, I've got the draft sketch of the 50lb H.E.R.L ready for 3D test print. Not sure yet if it has red/green stripes.  But put the Sopwiths on standby.

Pretty much ready to go full production on the Hales and Cooper bombs. Just need to beef up the tail handles and lugs a wee bit as they don't print consistently.

Decided to print the torpedo in three parts, all seemed to come out great so my brother is going to paint them up later today.

We also print a draft of the 520 LB H.E.R.L bomb... the details are crisp, but the ring fin needs collapsed a little during the printing process.  Another support sprue should rectify that.

Thanks and sure!  Still need to tweak the propellers a little.  Fragile stuff at this scale, but the cool thing about 3d prints is no flash and no sanding required.  My brother primed the torpedo bodies using a mix of leveling thinner and Mr. Finishing Surfacer, using a .2mm needle airbrush.

The Hale and Cooper bombs didn't get primed because they're so tiny. We left the faintest impression on the bodies to guide where the red & green stripes go (these can be seen on the detached bomb in the left image.  The thought being that with decals/paint applied they would end up flush with the rest of the bomb body surface.

They look great!! You can paint this material with hotter paint? Original 3D prints were acrylic only. Let us know the $ when you're set.

Thanks! My brother is testing different resins for small-scale applications.  The brand of resin that he prefers for these bombs is Phrozen Aqua 8k, (which enables a good degree of detail but is brittle compared to styrene) which after printing gets washed in '99% IPA' (I thought that was a type of beer) with no ill effects.  He tells me he's used Tamiya paints, Mr. Hobby acrylics, and some enamels on this resin with 'no probs'.  He's going to test a Tamiya lacquer direct without primer and will report back, but expects it will also be fine.  I'll post more pix of the lacquer ones once ready!

Like RIck I know nothing about these techniques, (I still use talcum powder and dope mixture to fill wood grain....), but they certainly knock conventional injection moulded parts into a cocked hat. Superb detail.

Hi again all,

Thanks again for the kind words.  I'm realizing I should have posted this in the 'Under Construction' section. Anyway, just wanting to share some of the progress we're making with our 3d British bomb bonanza.  We had to take a break because the weather was too cold for the printer in my bro's garage.  I've learned the basic lesson that despite a design's accuracy, one has to compromise to get it to physically produce correctly.  This means having to exaggerate some smaller elements in 1/72 scale.  For example, the carrying handles on these 20lb Hales bombs won't print consistently because their soooo micro thin.  This photo shows a batch that only partially produced (painted with lacquer, btw). Other times the ring handles do fully form:

(https://i.imgur.com/LksKSEdm.png). (https://i.imgur.com/onHABnlm.png)

In contrast, we've resolved the print process on the 520lb bomb, with the ring fin, arming vane and hollow lugs all properly formed.  Added the rivet and filling plug details.  Threw in the penny for scale:

(https://i.imgur.com/oxCGOuYm.png). (https://i.imgur.com/DqoHNk2m.png)

Our first draft of the 100lb bomb printed rather well. We were able to capture all the rivets and fin-stiffening stays.  Just need to add the lug and this one is good to go.
(https://i.imgur.com/Ex3TlCCm.png). (https://i.imgur.com/JgdthyHm.jpg)

We've tidied up our design on the 18in. aerial torpedo, adding the L-brackets, connecting bolt-holes and access holes.  But, the images show how our current method of printing it leaves a 'grain' effect on the surface, and the midsection's front fitting is not as crisp as it should be.  However, we have sorted out how to print the propeller blades using extra supports (see 2nd and 4th sprues) so they don't delaminate during the curing process.

(https://i.imgur.com/TiYJNPqm.png). (https://i.imgur.com/tLV5ig8m.png). (https://i.imgur.com/1tkhs4wm.png)

My print of the 50lb bomb totally failed, but the wee 16lb was a success, just like the one in this familiar photo:

(https://i.imgur.com/sGezR57m.png) (https://i.imgur.com/nRw7Qe7m.jpg)

Based on all the requests, we would like to make these available to the forum. Once we've perfected this batch, we should be able to scale up to 1/48 and 1/32.  Cheers!

Hi all,

Since last posting on our little bomb-making side project, I've completed fifteen different types of British bombs/torpedoes ranging from the wee 16lb Hales to the massive 3300lb Major SN, and including some unusual phosphorus types.  All in 1/72.  Still hammering out a few printing quirks, but these should all be ready for production soon.  Really trying to capture as much detail as possible, though the images show failures with some of the finer bits.  We're also still aiming to upscale them 1/48 and 1/32 (where the detail will truly pop), if anyone is interested in those?

These images include some of the earlier designs I've shared alongside some 1/72 figures for perspective (inspired by the ammo dump pics Jamo shared).  Now that I've learned some of the basics on how to design in 3d, I've started tinkering with other accessories, such as the scarff gun mount test print shown at bottom.  I'm also game to render some French and German type bombs, but don't have any drawings to work from yet.  If anyone can recommend some resources I'd be happy to know of them!

Hey Malaula,

I haven't really thought that far ahead but the price would be modest. First we have to get these to print consistently well in 1/72.  The parts are so tiny, I have the U-bar fixed in one position to help hold everything together.  If we can get some photo-etch going, that may enable it to be positionable. 1/48 & 1/32 should be no trouble to print separately.   Here are some image captures of the renderings.  What scale are you looking for?

(https://i.imgur.com/4vG0Bo1.png) (https://i.imgur.com/a3wyc6lm.png)

I also just rendered a first draft of the French Etévé (Nieuport) gun ring that was also seen on some Sopwiths.  I'm not sure about all the details (need better images) but we're aiming to test print this over the weekend:

Was able to do a little print run this morning and am happy to report that the Etévé ring printed well in 1/32.  Minor tweaking needed, and I'm still not 100% correct on the details.  If anyone knows of any good images of it I'd be grateful to access them.  Ran it also in 1/72 scale, but this version needs a little more strengthening due to the small details.

With a few improvements the 1/72 Scarff ring printed much better this time:

I do 72nd scale only...aren't the scarff rings too fragile in this Scale ?I've had bad experiences with  hand and feet breaking off printed1/72 Figures when painting them.
