Title: Ammo Feed Drum for Vickers on Nie.17/23
Post by: WD on September 16, 2022, 10:22:59 AM
Forumites,
I've resurrected my Eduard 1/72nd Nie.17/23 builds. I need your help please, if you would. What is the diameter of the wooden ammo feed drum that is on the left side of the cockpit on a Vickers armed Nie.17 or 23? Is it located directly behind the metal support that holds the mount for the throttle/spark retarder or is it further back?

Thanks!

WD

Hello WD,

if you are talking about the spool for the spent ammo belt, in the Copper State 1/32 N17 it has the diameter of 11.5mm so that would be 5.11mm in 1/72nd scale (I think - math is hard check my numbers :) )

As far as positioning it looks like it may have attached to the back of the throttle bracket or maybe to the vertical metal post there? Again the Copper State 1/32 kit may be a good reference:

Thank you!  Yes, sorry, I had it backwards. Thanks for the help, the pics, and the math. ;)  This is something that always seems to be missing from most drawings.

OK Forumites, another question on the take up drum for the Vickers on Nieuport 17's. I'm assuming it is metal?  What color should it be painted? I'm trying to scratch-build one for a 1/72nd Eduard Nieuport build, and this has never been included in any kits, and all of my references, when it does show it, is a blurry B&W photo.

Thank you for your help!

Hey WD, the drum is, I think, made of plywood with metal central spool etc.
I choose to do it this way anyway, on my CSM 17 - see pic, if that helps.
Cheers
Sandy

Thank you very much Sandy!  Like I said, when it comes to 1/72nd Nie.17's, this has never been featured, covered, etc. What few images I have for it don't reveal much in terms of materials, colors, etc. This helps a great deal, and no one except me will probably ever see it. :)

Petrov, by the way, that French pilot figure is truly outstanding!
