Hello all. Here's my latest completion. A DH.2 of 32 Sqn in the markings of Lionel Rees.
It is scratchbuilt in 1/144 scale, using styrene, acrylic, sterling silver and a little 18ct yellow gold for good measure (I'm a jeweller by trade, so why not?).
I started this one on Dec 31st and finished it on August 17. Or Aug 25th... if you count the fact that I took these photos then realised I had yet to make a control stick ::)
The excellent DH.2 builds by many other modellers here at ww1aircraftmodels.com were a priceless visual reference while making this. So thank you all! Here are some pics.

Good God William, how on earth did you manage to rig that in 1/144 scale. Not to mention the other details.

What an amazing piece of work William, the detail for such a tiny model is beyond all logic and that bottle of Tamiya Cement says it all! The finish is exceptional for any scale, my sincere compliments on some really great modelling.
Cheers,
Lance

Stunning craftsmanship! Well done!

A true 'jewel'.

That is a just question!
I am in shock!
-
I just realised that this little gem is only 53 mm long with a span of 60 mm.
Mindboggling.....

Thank you for sharing these masterpieces! The art of the jeweler combined with the modelling world is a joy to behold!!!
-
I've run out of superlatives for your models, William.
Silent stupefaction!
Sandy
-
Like the others I am lost for words. And built in such a short time too....
Any superlative I can think of would fall miserably short to express my admiration for this model (and the Fee).
Stephen.

WONDERFUL !

Amazing. The only way I could get a picture like that is to find a really big match head to lay next to my models!
-
Thank you everyone! That is very kind :)
I’m glad it is completed and in such a relatively short time. A funny thing happened during the last covid lockdown, and I received a chance to put together a book on the subject of scratch building WWI aircraft in 1/144 scale. After a brief panic I realised I better up my game and boost my output to meet the deadline. I haven’t got a title yet, but this one will be chapter four. Next up is a pair of Nieuport 17s. One French and the other an RFC machine. After that a Fokker D.VIII if things go well 🤞
I learned a lot from this one. I think my favourite detail is the 25 radiating scribe lines on the Lewis drum:)

bravo! fantastic!!! :) :) :)

incredible! I never thought it to be 1:144....
really well done!

Phenomenal! Truly some kind of dark magic...!
Absolutely brilliant work. Do you have any work in progress pictures or a build log somewhere?
Cheers!

Hi Brad, thank you! :D. I’m doing a write up on the build and trying to pack as much how-to info in as I can. I’m going full speed on a couple of Nieuports now too. I might have a few questions about the N17s to put to the resident experts soon.
-
I hope you do a bomber or one of the large sea planes in 1/144. That would be awesome.
Alan.
-
Hard to believe that your DH2 is only 144th scale - you could very easily (if you just show pictures with no scale detail) be fooled into thinking this is much larger ...........
Absolutely mindblowing, stunning work
Regards
Dave

One of the most incredible scratch-builds I have ever seen!!!! Even More so in 1/144th scale!

Thanks everybody! ;D ;D

It's coming out through Fonthill Media. Still a ways to go yet though and a few more types to make for it.

Here's a few earlier shots that were taken along the way. :)

Not huge matches just a very fine artist. I for one will be buying your book.
-
That’s some of the most incredible modelling I’ve seen in this Forum. And certainly the most realistic models at this scale.
Cheers,
Gary

I still cannot believe that the engine is the same size of the match head!!! :o

When I go to the beach there are still lots of hunky 1/700 ship modellers, just waiting to kick sand in my face :-[
I still cannot believe that the engine is the same size of the match head!!! :o
The engine wasn't too bad. It was the hand-scribed Lewis drums that almost did for me. I've had bigger pieces of grit caught in my eye!

Magnificently mad! That drum is incredible! Not to mention literally everything else.
-
Good Lord! I had no idea those Lewis drums were scratch from brass. I assumed punched plastic discs. You are truly an artist with incredible skill. I’m in line for your book as well!
-
A jeweler, ehh???? Moses Sandals! That's amazing. THANKS for sharing!!!

It is often said that an IQ of 160 is the level of genius. Is it a burden to manage your IQ of 175? All kidding aside it was a joy to witness your limitless talent. I do hope you'll post often.
Thanks for shooting and sharing.
-
There are simply no words for this level of scale modelling....

Thank you again everybody for the kind comments. It really does mean a lot and encourages me to keep going. I've added a few more shots below which were taken just recently, while I fiddle about with camera angles for the book. Next up are some Nieuports. :)

I've out of commission for a while and missed this. My loss entirely, your jeweller's precision continues to amaze. I was scared off trying to scratch a DH.2 in 1/32 by the complexity of this odd little fighter. How you manage such perfection in 1/144 is beyond my wildest imaginings. I absolutely love it!!!!

Oh sweet lord, that is absolutely amazing. I’m not sure if that makes me inspired or make want to take up knitting instead.
Thank you everyone! That is very kind :)

Do take your time. You have one patient buyer here at least. If I haven’t switched to knitting by then ;D

I'd love to see a Sopwith Tripe in 1/144. 😉

:o... This can pass easily as 1/48 and not to mention 1/72!!!
-
This is brilliant work by any standard and in any scale William, absolutely amazing.
-
Thank you so much. I really do appreciate it! Sometimes I look at them and think, how on earth??? :o
The Nieuports are coming along. More on those later, I hope.

The match head is almost as wide as the Nieuport e fine cowling. That's outrageous! Will definitely be buying your book but don't think my ham fists will be attempting the squinty eyed scale any time soon!
-
Nice start on the Nieuport. I'm sure it will be stunning as well!!
Steve
-
Three pages of well deserved praise of your magnificent talents. Will be watching For the Nieuports. Bloody amazing mate!!!

Those little guys are truly amazing.
