Several Russian-built single-seat Nieuport N.10 aircraft seem to have a sort of "boxed-in" gun installation on the top wing. Looks vaguely streamlined. Anyone have decent photos or drawings of what this might look like? And what kind of gun it usually held?

Harry Woodman's book 'Early Aircraft Armament' has a picture on p96 of a Russian Nie10 with a maxim offset to left of upper centre section and a streamlined plywood box for the ammunition set to the right.
This is one of several designs by an engineer called V V Iordan.
Don't know if that helps and I'm not sure what the copyright situation is regarding the pics in this book.

as to the mounts, just what ever was laying around. most period photos show the original pre foster top wing mount with any belt fed machine gun to replace the lewis.
as far as ammo storage, there was no standardized idea.

http://www.wio.ru/ww1a/risak-n.htm this bit shows a ni 21 with an aerodymanically designed ammo pod next to a french hotchkiss. although the drawing insinuates the feed belt, or even ammo strip as somehow wrapping around the entire machine gun before feeding into it..
