All,
Here is a new model I'll be starting soon. I've always liked the Avro and the model looks pretty nice "from the box". This will be especially fun since WNW never got around to kitting this old girl!
I won't be repainting this one. Well...maybe the cowling! ::)
More soon...Dan
-
Looking forward to seeing how this one folds up ! ;) see what I did there ! lol
Alexis

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
That's like a Dad joke only it was funny! Nice one, Alexis.
Got the beginning of the simple cockpit done. As usual, bulk heads are backed with 1/32nd sheet balsa. I need to find some good cockpit shots of this thing. I think it needs some dolling up even though I promised myself I wasn't going to do that...we'll see.
Thanks for looking,
Dan
-
Excellent! Eagerly (but patiently) waiting for more updates.
I need to find some good cockpit shots of this thing.
Allow me to assist with a bunch of photos by our own Jamo (https://jamesfahey.smugmug.com/Avro-504K/) showing one of the aircraft I'd like to build. This is a genuine original that was restored by the late Stuart Tantrum here in NZ and now owned and operated by TVAL. It also happened to be based at my local aerodrome in the 1930s!

Holy Hannah, Zac. Those are amazing. I was just trying to figure out the changes between the front and rear cockpits. Got my answer.
Fan-freaking-tastic.
Thanks, Zac...Dan

I'm just the messenger - full credit to Jamo for sharing his incredible archive!

Excellent start Dan! You should be able to "Doll" up the cockpits to your Hearts desire with those photos as reference!

With that info , the sky is the limit !

I SO agree, Alexis. I think this model would be a great basis for some crazy detailing (ZAC!).
Here is a bit more on the fuselage. It's a little tricky as the whole thing is one piece and folds over the interior frames. In my case, I don't think I was dead square so the underside surface may need to be cut and then repositioned. No problem, though. You can also see the saw tooth prep for the curved turtle deck too. Looks pretty good so far.
More soon,
Dan
-
She's shaping up nicely Dan, bravo! I certainly see room to improve on the basic kit - a very exciting canvas!

I don't know if this is a threat due to my sharing Jamo's link or something else ;D ;D

Zac is up for the challenge ! ;D
Nice work on the fuselage Dan ;)

Dan may or may not have made me an offer I couldn't refuse... ;)

Excellent work on the fuselage Dan. As always I look forward to more updates!

Thanks, All...sorry for the MIA report, but I've been putting a 1/8th scale plastic model of my brother in law's 1970 Honda CB750 motorbike and it's been taking all of my time! Nice to get back to a bit of wind and wires and paper...
I got the turtle deck on with a little struggle. I don't know if my fuselage is slightly too wide (a tiny, tiny bit...) but the saw teeth that were made to help adhere the top to the fuselage sides really weren't working to my liking. I ended up cutting most of them off except for about an inch behind the rear cockpit. It all came out in the end but not my best job. The rear fuselage bottom is also kind of funny in that it's just paper and no sheet or strengtheners like the top longeron. It just butt glues to the sides. Again, not what I'd have done had I designed it. But I didn't so there you go! Beggars can't be choosers. ;D
So far, it is looking pretty nice. I'm looking forward to the tails next and then the front and cowling soon.
More tomorrow...Dan

I was wondering why I'd experienced a feeling of emptiness recently... ;)
Great to see you back at this, Dan! I forget: are you planning a different paint scheme for this?
-
Hi Zac!
I'm here. Just busy. I am trying to leave this one "out of the box" this time. I may hit it with the airbrush on a couple of places to touch up, weather and certainly when I make the cowling!
Steady as she goes and thanks for looking...Dan
-
I am just catching up from posts made while I was on Vacation so I didn't notice an absence ;D As always your Avro is looking terrific! You have Me wondering if there is a BE12 in 1/32nd scale :o ( Probably beyond My skill to print, let alone build)
RAGIII
-
Ahh, Rick. Not quite a BE12 but...See the photos below!
A tad more finsihed. Got the rudder and stab attached. The kit calls for a piece of wire to locate the stab but I must have been slightly off in my building. It was a mess so I just cut it all off, butt joined and used the stab struts on the underside to hold everything straight and true with great strength! Just like the real thing.
I'll start the nose tonight...Dan

I know...maybe I am big scissors pharma? ;)
Dan
You being a plant by Big Paper model really is the only logical conclusion.
I think I see a BE in my future.
-
The darn paper bug has got me but good...that's ok with me!
Here is the start of the cowling and the engine. Not done yet but at least you can see the way forward. I'm trying to hide some seams and use the kit engine. Trouble is, it's quite simplified and some of the location points for the intakes don't make much sense to me. We'll see what I do next. I'm also going to try and burnish the cowl from the inside while holding the outside against a semi-hard surface. My hope it that this will crush the layered edges of the butt joined paper and maybe I can even avoid priming, sanding and re-painting. Forging new ground here so wish me luck! ;D
Anyway...it's a start!
Cheers,
Dan

I'm curious to see how you make the cowling smoother...at the moment it stands out as "this is a card model!" compared to the finished Fokker Dr.I which screams "you fool, I am styrene, don't doubt me!".
-
Looking forward on seeing how the cowl turns out , so far very enjoyable following along
Alexis
-
As always you are moving right along on an excellent build. As the others have said, I am looking forward to the finished cowl!

Hello, All...I did fill/paint the Avro cowling and it looks pretty dang nice. I'll post that soon but...in EVEN BIGGER NEWS...
Not sure if this is where to add things like this, but Luis Igualada has a couple of new designs. Check them out as the two models I've built from him have been just stunning, fun builds! Those were the Albatros and SPAD. You Nieuport 23 and 17-philes would love these!
Nieuport 23 and 17!!!

I have no affiliation with Ecardmodels or Luis...I just love his designs and have had a really positive experience with them. I just ordered the 17 as a download.

Those do not look like card models. Incredible!
-
Finally did some more work on this beauty. Life is just too busy!
I made the prop and now it spins really nicely. I'll add the cowling soon (painted it black already) and then on to the wings.
More sooner than later,
Dan
-
Inspirational stuff Dan! I showed Dad this kit the other day and he was staggered that such a thing exists. I may have to get started on mine...
-
Super job on the engine and the prop really sets if off
Alexis
-
Thanks, Zac and Alexis...the wings should go together pretty well. The toughest thing may be that landing gear! We'll see.
Stay tuned...Dan
-
The cowling, engine, and prop all look fantastic Dan!
RAGIII
-
Thanks, Rick! Things (life) has gotten in the way, but I hope to get back at it soon. Wings should go together pretty easily (I hope).
Dan
-
Got the wings skinned. Next will be putting the lowers on and creating the top wing all with the correct dihedral. Should be a dawdle.
;) ;D
Dan
-
Great work Dan! My own sits waiting, taunting me... :P
-
The wings look perfect Dan!
RAGIII
-
Well...it's been 6000 years, but I'm back at this one. Life just kept getting busier and busier and now I've got some free time! Since last time, I got the bottom wing on, the dihedral created, all four ailerons completed and the top wing glued with the appropriate dihedral as well. You can also see the little jigs that came in the kit to help get the correct stagger and plumb on the wings. I backed them with balsa so they will be a bit stronger. So the struts are next along with putting the top wing on! Can't wait.
Thanks for looking...again.
Dan
-
Bravo Dan! I'm glad to see you at it again!
I have to admit my own effort is on hold due to mojo deficiency but seeing your progress will probably spur me on.
-
Sorry it's taking so long, Zac. But I'm back on it now! I got the cabanes, interplanes and the top wing on. Went rather smoothly. All is straight and strong. Next will be the landing gear after a bit of rigging which is kind of peaceful to do.
More soon and thanks for looking,
Dan
-
No need to apologise - I'm the one who's staring at cut-out bits in shame! I'm really pleased you take the time to share progress here and on YouTube.
-
It May have been a while but OH Man!!! That really looks amazing!!
RAGIII
-
Must say Danny boy , you are getting realllllly good at this medium , Fantastic ! :)
Alexis
-
Thanks Alexis, Rick and Zac!
I got a lot of the rigging done and I also added my windshields. I need to make some double flying wires and then do the control rigging but it's coming along smoothly!
More soon...Dan (and thanks for looking!)
-
Lovely job Dan!
-
even Better with the rigging under way Dan Beautiful Work!
RAGIII
-
Sorry it's been a while, folks. But I'm back! I got all the rigging done, control wires (doubles) and now I'm working on the tail skid and then the landing gear/skid. Should be fun!
Thanks for looking...Dan
-
Great work Dan. Always a joy to see your work.
-
Man o man Dan! You make these kits look so well. I’ve followed several of your builds and honestly have to take three or four looks to tell it’s not a molded kit. Very impressive!
-
Lovely work Dan! I hope to get to my own soon thanks to your thread and video acting as inspiration.
-
Thanks to all as usual!
I started to get the landing gear together and did a few mods to make it more manageable for me like using V-struts for the skid connections rather than two separate wires for each component. I also did the tail skid and made the wing tip skids out of soft fuse wire.
Looking good if going slowly. The end is in site, though!
Cheers and thanks for looking...Dan
-
Lovely work, Dan! My own copy edges closer back to The Bench...
-
Neat stuff Dan! I love the Avro and your really doing this one well!
-
Thanks, Zac and Tim. Your comments are much appreciated! :D
I got the axle on, the main bungee gear legs installed and the whole thing rigged. All she needs now are wheels and tires. Then the top (what I assume is a gravity fed) gas tank and it'll basically be finished.
More soon...Dan
-
Lovely work Dan, looks just like a bought one! I'm intrigued to see how you tackle the wheels.
