Title: Lloyd C.V Polish service (1/32, Lukgraph)
Post by: PrzemoL on February 28, 2022, 08:45:07 AM: The brand new Lukgraph resin/3D-print kit lands on my bench. I will build 46.37 known from two photos taken after an accident when the rear fuselage was broken. It is not known if it was repaired.

I started with the 3D print engine. The material is quite hard and brittle, it does yield to cutting with razor saw but the trees are vulnerable to breaking and in some cases small cavities in the elements are formed, which require filling, I use liquid CA glue for that. The 3D printed elements have visible print layers at some spots but a couple of sessions with primer and sanding can repair this to an acceptable level. I am at the third session now and it seems that the fourth one will be required.

I am still not sure how to approach the painting. Yet, I am quite sure that I will not dare to cut this engine into pieces. So probably a lot of tedious masking and brush retouches, which I detest, will be required.

Right, Rick, WNW injection was surely of better quality. But even so, this is not bad. I managed to airbrush the majority and with some retouches with a brush the engine is quite decent I deem.

You have no idea how many times I have talked to Łukasz about 3D print quality, the difficulties with the engines printed as one complete assembly piece and another issues related to his kits.
But he decided for many reasons he had to make them like this. He is basicaly a one-person company and he has no resources to do it otherwise, while keeping the kit prices at a reasonable level, produce enough copies to be able to live from the income and offer more and more new releases.
Coping with these engines and the visible traces of 3D print are the price we modelers have to pay in benchtime for the pleasure of having kitted the subjects which most likely no one else will provide us.
As for me I am ready to pay this price.

The exhausts and upper water pipe sections got sanded and airbrushing started. The exhausts had the outlet openings but they were too small so I decided to drill the out with larger diameter. Special care is required because the 3D print material is very brittle and if you drill too rapidly it is prone to crash. Drill veeeery slowly!

The visible edges of wood and metal panels around engine opening are being substantially thinned to be more true to scale. This new Lukgraph resin is very fine to work with, almost as soft as injection plastic. A sharp modeling knife and sand paper do their job.

And cleaning of the resin and 3D printed elements of the cockpit is also underway. I will use the primer soon to check the quality of sanding.

Here is more, I started some assembly of interior. Only a few bits will be assembled before painting wood to leave margin for easy manipulation with an airbrush.
For now, only a little trimming of engine fire wall and under-engine supports was necessary. The former was marginally too broad and the latter ones had too narrow gap for the engine block. A few touches with a knife and sanding paper and they fit nicely now.

I wholeheartedly agree with this! I’d happily buy kits like this and their BE2c and others, without any internal detail - no engines, cockpits, anything - and have to scratch-build or source those bits elsewhere, just to get these beautiful unique planes.

And you’re doing an amazingly beautiful job with this engine!

Well, before going to bed I mounted the engine, the linkages and a fuel line are connected, too.
And I have just realized that the cockpit floor has to be lengthened to the rear because the crude interior joint of fuselage halves will be visible through the huge cockpit opening and it has to be covered somehow. Scrathing this extension will be the last thing to do before closing the fuselage.

The resin quality is acceptable, I have already commented it is not too hard. And there are very few air bubbles, actually I have done only 5 plastic inserts on those edges where the wings were attached to the blocks - I will show them in the next photo session.

I have a first- or second-generation 3D-printed kit (WW2 subject in 1/48) which is long-stalled due to having to sand the rather large print layers. Mine are much more drastic than seen here so that gives me hope that it'd be much less prep work to tackle a LukGraph than I anticipated - thanks for sharing your progress, Prze!

I have prepared a cardboard jig and attached the lower wings with 3.5 deg dihedral and 2 deg sweepback at the trailing edge. The seams must be filled, some work is still required.

Rigging eyelets in wings, centrepiece struts and undercarriage struts mounted. Horns at u/c struts for rubber cord suspension added. 4 control horns for ailerons made from plastic as replacement for inadequately flat PE kit pieces.

I have shown the primer bottle at the beginning of my thread. It is Mig One Shot Primer. I did not notice any interaction with the resin. And if you possibly refer to that zone on the upper wings where I had a technical break in wood application, it is mostly the play of clear brown shades/intensity and the semi gloss/gloss surface. It will all be varnished and unified, after decaling and wash. ;)

I may just be on time. Now it depends mostly on how good the fit of struts will be. If I have to correct their length, I will not finish this model before Bytom.

And for the time being - the wash done and varnished. The bits are basically ready for the final assembly.

The plan for tonight is also to attempt the assembly of the wing cellule... We will see...

And 4 main interplane struts are being attached using a funny ad-hoc installation of several bottles I had at hand and a heavy spool of soldering wire as a weight to keep the geometry of the upper wings which for now serve only to keep the struts geometry.

Thanks for answering my question regarding the primer, I have overlooked the picture before.
I asked because there used to be a special resin primer from Gunze, but I haven't found it anywhere. If it works as well on resin as the Metal Primer from this company does on metal parts, then I would have liked to test it.
Masking on resin can be risky if the primer does not adhere well enough.

Frank, it seems that this primer holds to resin perfectly. I had no problems with masking, no paint peeling, so I can highly recommend it.
