With Russian military forces massing on the borders of the Ukraine and fears of an imminent invasion of that country I have reached out to our friends Roden in the Ukraine to express our concern for their safety and wellbeing and our ongoing support for Roden.
This is not a political post, we are a hobby forum and we support our manufacturers of whom Roden have been long standing supporters of this Forum for many years.
While our hobby involves military subjects from war, we can't forget that model companies such as Roden now live with the threat of invasion every day. I have told Roden President Vladimir that his friends at the WW1 aircraftmodels forum wish to send our best wishes and hopes that they will be safe in the times ahead.
Vladimir has now replied and expressed thanks for our support in these trying times.
"The situation is alarming indeed. Of course we are working and don’t give up. I am planning to release Sopwith Strutter, scale 1/32." he says.
Vladimir sends his wishes for peace and well being to us.
We can only hope there is a peaceful resolution to the standoff between Russia and the Ukraine, but with Roden based in the capital, Kyiv (Kiev), they are very vulnerable to the consequences of an invasion.

Well done Dave and thank you. Sad times we live in. News is bad for mental health

Wishing our friends at Roden all the best in these dark times, I hope everything may come soon to a peaceful end.

No more wars. Nowhere.
No more wars in Europe. We had way too many of them.

let war be just in plastic and in 1:48 scale! this is what we need, nothing more...
-
Well done, Dave.
Our thoughts are with our friends in the Ukraine.
Why can't we just live peacefully and forego this urge to build empires and occupy land. It is so futile- the land is still there long after we've gone.
Sandy
-
Very well done, Dave.
We here in Poland do not want any war, never ever, having suffered so many of them in the past. May the good God send his blessing to that land, to spare us another war.

Well Done Dave. My thoughts are with our Friends in Ukraine!

Thank you Dave, and well done sir. As many have said, our thoughts, prayers, and well wishes go out in the hope this will somehow be resolved in some other fashion.

Very well said, Dave. My thoughts and prayers for everyone in the Ukraine.

Thanks for doing this, Dave.
The last thing this world needs is conflict and division. Two things that seem to be uppermost in society today.
My thoughts are with you Roden.

Folks,
I have just exercised Moderation responsibilities and removed two posts on this thread. Expressions of concern and well wishes that this situation will remain peaceful are fine, however politically judgemental commentary and speculation on various national actions/intents have no place on this Forum. Let's focus on plastic, resin etc. consideration and friendship; we are an international "club" and need to remain respectful of one another.

Yes indeed, we need peace, wars only bring destruction and suffering. Developed countries must focus their efforts and money on technologies that enhance the living conditions of humans, instead of producing mass-killing weapons, no more wars in our world, our thoughts are with the well being of Roden. Miniart, ICM, and other great modeling companies

Dave, having stopped following the news too closely a few years back the Ukraine situation has been on the outermost fringes of my mind and the consequences for the hobby industry there never crossed my mind.
Vladimir has now replied and expressed thanks for our support in these trying times.
"The situation is alarming indeed. Of course we are working and don’t give up. I am planning to release Sopwith Strutter, scale 1/32." he says.
Vladimir sends his wishes for peace and well being to us.
I have Ukrainian roots about three generations back, and know some Russian, but I feel the need to turn to Google Translate: Бажаю вам миру та удачі.

Well said all.
Roden were largely responsible for my return to the hobby, and I'm hugely grateful for what they've offered us over the years, in several scales.
The staff and their families are very much in ones thoughts.

Our prayers with you, and with all the countries involved - war is a loss for everyone.

Thanks for the messages of support for our model friends in the Ukraine. Unfortunately we have had to delete two posts which were political in nature - that is not the business of this forum and never will be.
My original post was to show support for the staff and families of Roden, a company which has actively supported this Forum since early in 2012. They deserve our support.
However we also extend our concerns and hopes for peace and safety to the other model businesses based in the Ukraine- most notably Alex Belov of Proper Plane, ICM Holdings and MiniArt - all of whom, like Roden, are based in Kyiv (Kiev).
We wish peace and safety to them and their families.

Hear hear - it's only in recent months that I've realised just how many kit design and production companies are in Ukraine.

Thank you Dave and well said.
Best of luck to our friends at Roden.

Hear hear - it's only in recent months that I've realised just how many kit design and production companies are in Ukraine.
There are more kit manufacturer of aircraft models, which was not mentioned yet: Amodel, AviS, AMP, Clear Prop!, Dora Wings
And I'm sure there are more.
These companies have made a bunch of new models available to us in the last few years!
Cheers,

I hope everybody will be able to use his common sense, and I wish all of our friends in the Ukraine, manufacturers and modelers alike a good outcome of this strenuous situation.

My thoughts are with the people of Ukraine, worrying times indeed.
Dave.

I hope everything turns out well for the people of Roden and the other model companies. I really like your kits. I also hope thing work out for the rest of the people of the Ukraine.

The President of Roden, Vladimir Chumak, has sent his sincere thanks to Forum members for your support of their safety during these stressful times in the Ukraine.
Vladimir has seen the Forum messages of support and says "Having been engaged in collection models for more than 20 years, the most important thing for us is to feel in a team of creative people devoted to this hobby and respecting our history."
We hope Roden's team and the other model companies based in the Ukraine can continue to be safe and focus on the hobby products that have made them famous and respected around the world.

A terrible day for everyone and especially for those suffering the direct effects. Just a caution and reminder Folks, let's leave personalities and politics out of our appropriate and genuine expressions of concern and support. The world and humankind are not better for this...... it's a very sad day.

I just got the latest Cher Ami newsletter. Contained therein was the following news:
"It is very unlikely that any products will be coming from Ukraine in the
foreseeable future. Here’s what we do know at the moment:
News from Mini-Art is that the company owner Alina, her father Alex and
their family fled to Poland a few days before the invasion of Russia. At the
moment they are very busy delivering aid to the Polish/Ukrainian border. They
pick up refugees and provide shelter in Poland for them. In addition, they have
arranged a warehouse and collect relief supplies. The MiniArt factory has been
abandoned
As of March 4th ICM were still posting pro-Ukrainian messages on Facebook.
The company had three new sets of armoured WWI figures scheduled for this
year including German, Italian and US sets
There has not been much news from Roden. They reported being hacked early
in the invasion and have today updated their profile on Facebook. Roden were
due to release a late version of their 1/32 scale Spad kit and there were rumours
of a Sopwith Strutter and Avro 504 this year.
Our thoughts are with all of those diectly affected by the Russian invasion."
:'(

Thanks for sharing that, WD. Sometimes the old saying "no news is good news" is not necessarily true.
MikroMir's Facebook page has also been steadily posting nothing but war-related material, so at least we know whomever runs their social media is okay.

Very sad times indeed :(
I really feel sad for all those affected... one of the hardest things to do (although that is all relative, being a somewhat safe 1000km away from Ukraine) is to keep having to answer my kids questions as to why one country would to this to another. :( They're 9 and 7 now.
On a note regarding Roden, I read on The Modelling News that (one of) their box artists was killed. (Valery Grygorenko) He did some of those amazing and, for model kits, quite artistic paintings like the jumping Opel Blitz being chased by a P-40 in the desert, the 1/48 Grumman OV-1 with a big Budda, etc etc.
He also did the gorgeous 1/72 Curtiss H-16 boxart, one of my favourite boxarts ever.

The painting itself is gorgeous, but somehow my eye is always attracted to the odd stuff he put in paintings, like the balloons in this case.
Sad times indeed, and it takes the joy of modelling away for me :(

:'( >:( :'( >:( Horrors of this invasion will be in our minds for long, I am sure. And no one knows, how much more is to come...
And, Jeroen, as for your kids' question, the answer is apparently simple for anyone following history of this region of the world. Yet, I will not elaborate, because then my post would be removed at once... >:( :'(

Oh no... Truly shocked to hear that about Valery. I always really enjoyed his work, and the box art you showed us there was indeed one of my favourites too. As you say, he would usually put in some funny small details in his paintings. I got used to looking out for his logo on the box art - a silhouette of an Aichi 'Val' of course.
That H-16 artwork had a lot to do with my wanting to build that kit, so here's a small tribute attached.
Sympathies for his family, and so many others.

I have just realised that the model with the box art by Valery was at the very beginning of my venture into ww1 modelling... I do not know how to express my feelings... :'(

My Father was in the Polish army and escaped to England to fight against the Nazis. My Mother was in the Polish resistance until the Uprising in 1944 while the Russians stopped the british airdropping supplies. I was born in London lived in England for 30 years (happily) living in peace in Austria the last 30 years and now ??? My heart goes out to the Ukrainians.
Hopefully my post doesn't doesn't get deleted too !!

OK Guys, I'm going to leave these last two posts here for Dave to Review after the time difference is effected however please keep it non condemning. We all know that the culprits who we wish to single out are not our Members who may be hurt or offended by pointed criticism or blame. I'll be brutally frank here, I personally am moved to tears more often then not as I watch these events and, as a person who served my country in Military uniform for 37 years, I am not naive about the brutal situation we are witnessing but we must maintain our mutual respect and friendship as an international community of like minded genuine friends despite all of this. Please, let's not lose our place on this.
Lance

Thanks for your comment lance. The point I am making is that hopefully someday we can live together peacefully again. I am living in Austria and it's history is well known and was 75 years ago an enemy to my parents, but I am happy to be here. Maybe sometime in the future the Ukrainian people and the rest of the world will be able to live together with Russia. It's just a crying shame at all the pointless death and destruction bought about a single man. I'm certain if the Russian population really knew what was going on they would put a stop to it. In the meantime let everyone please support all displaced peoples wherever they are, don't forget the chaos in Syria and many other places. It's hard to enjoy any modelling with all this going on, and not so far away.
Let peace overcome.

Folks, I'm going to leave these recent posts as they are but endorse Lance's plea to please make posts non condemning. It's difficult treading a neutral path, more so when the war strikes deep within our hobby.
Please make time to mourn and express condolences for the family of talented Roden box artist Valeriy Grygorenko, who was killed outside Kyiv on March 4.
Roden have posted a stirring tribute to Valeriy on their Facebook page.

Roden honour him as a kind, sincere and infinitely talented man whose artworks, known around the world, inspired others.
I will be conveying deepest condolences to Vladimir and the fellow Roden staff, whose safety and wellbeing is constantly in our minds.

Condolences to friends, family and colleagues on the passing of Valeriy in such circumstances. A great loss to our hobby. Marc

With the loss of Valeriy the war becomes a face :(
Some days ago I watched the movie "Men of Honor" on TV. There was a Greyhound bus in one scene and I told my wife, that there is a relatively new kit of that bus by Roden available.
At that time I do not know, that he painted that cover art too.
The modeling community is not only affected by the at least temporary shutdown of more then 120 model related companies in Ukraine, but also the companies from Russia like Zwesda, Quinta Studio and so on. Due to disconnection of payment services of credit cards and Paypal to Russia nobody can buy there at the moment.
Buy the way, does anyone know anything about the status of Proper Plane?
Cheers,
Frank

Roden have posted a stirring tribute to Valeriy on their Facebook page.
That's wonderful, and I bet it showcases only a fraction of his work. Unlike other brands I'm unfamiliar with the names of many box artists and sadly Valeriy was such a person - but I have admired many of Roden's recent releases. My very best wishes to those closest to him.
-
And, Jeroen, as for your kids' question, the answer is apparently simple for anyone following history of this region of the world. Yet, I will not elaborate, because then my post would be removed at once...
Though I would never pretend to know it all (I don't) I do know enough about the region to try to explain in kid's language. They are still kids, who think more in black and white, and they simply cannot comprehend it. I'll not go and elaborate, too -though one of the more innocent questions I got asked if there is gold or valuables in those cities under attack...
There is a joy in being a kid with the horizon a lot closer :)
@Mark, that' a beautiful model! I don't have this one, but I do have the Felixstowe with Taras Shtyk boxart -I think he painted nearly all WWI model kit boxarts. (also Ukranian)
@Frank: another gorgeous boxart... I was looking for the little trick in it, and only after half an hour of staring I realized there is a mirror image of an aircraft (looks like a Douglas DC-2?) in the windshield.
Sad times for all involved :(

RIP I wish the rest of the people of Roden luck.

Hi I’ve been purchasing a few Roden kits for the first time. Hopefully it helps nice kits. Unfortunately the Albatros D1 has serious moulding issues on the upper wing trailing edges. Will try to fix, otherwise will look bad. All the best to the brave Ukrainians suffering in yet another unnecessary war.

Yet another bad period this poor world of ours is going through...
I have found this thread just now, and I felt the need to post my salute along with the others'. I quote Daz words: "All the best to the brave Ukrainians suffering in yet another unnecessary war".
Condolences to Roden and to Valeriy's family.
