I've received the Special Hobby Grand Giveaway promotion kit. The subject will be an out of the box build of Serial No. A186.
I chose the subject, mostly because there are some great photos of Bayetto with this plane, part also his middle name intrigued
me 'Hippolyte'. But the more research I've done, the more color full he becomes... An example is Bayetto's nickname in the RFC
was "Mad Jack" due to his flamboyant stunt flying, including flying into hangar entrances!
Cheers: Kent

I'm glad to see you start this and look forward to seeing this build. I hope you are feeling well.
Best Regards,

I am really looking forward to your build Kent. Have Fun!
RAGIII

The kit seems to be a good base for a nice model!
Have fun with the build.
Cheers,
Frank
PS: PN sent.

I'm with those guys Kent, I'm very excited to see what you accomplish with this kit. I hope it's good therapy for you too :)
-
I am really looking forward to following your progress on this Build Kent. I finished it recently in the same scheme and although it's a fairly simple Kit it can be a challenge at times. Good luck and I'll be looking over your shoulder, enjoy!
Cheers,
Lance

Chair , check , popcorn , check , pepsi , check . Okay I'm ready !
Alexis

Beautiful, a fine choice Kent.
I started the model a year ago.
Depending on what you have in mind, this will be a quick model - or a real challenge.
I have decided on the latter.
Probably in a week or two I will mount the two wings to the fuselage.
No matter what your choice will be, I wish you a lot of fun and joy in building the little "Bullet"

So I'm off to a new beginning :)
I have indeed been looking forward to this!
And again, I must say it seems to be the perfect kit for a new start!

I'm using the 'Les Casques de Cuir' (Leather Helmets) 3D work as I guide, for some updates and detailing.

The page is in French which I cannot read. It looks like there hasn't been any updates recently?
But the 3D digital work is great.
Cheers: Kent
-
Your mods look fantastic Kent. I think your build is going to be inspirational to the point of making Me pick up one of these kits!
RAGIII
-
A promising start Kent! The 3D work looks like a fantastic reference, congratulations on finding it.

That’s actually cool, what you are doing here!
Andreas

Good to see you getting into it Kent!
I may be telling you how to suck eggs here, have you tried copying and pasting the french into google translate at all?

Special Hobby is closely following Kent's build and their marketing manager Ondrej says he hopes the kit helps Kent's recovery from his brain injury.
"Please give him our best regards, with congratulation to win the prize and wishes to soon recovery. We will be very happy if
we´ll be able to publish pictures of his build at our blog and social media" Ondrej says.
Special Hobby really appreciate the support they are receiving from our Forum members.

Great to know that SH is following this one David! Just as a heads up I noticed yesterday that the RFC version is still in stock at Sprue Brothers...Maybe MY Birthday Present to Myself soon 8)
RAGIII

Wow! That's some mighty fine support from all of you, I really appreciate it, really it motivates me a lot, even though it's kind of hard!
Working is like 'slowmo'. Everything needs more time than I'm used to, even little things, but that's how it is at the moment :o.
But I'm glad though, it's even possible to be able to spend some time at the bench.
It's quite embarrassing really, but it's getting better.
The build commences with detailing some of the internal parts as well as the engine. (Well you are right it's not going to be OOB)
I've used a Le Rhône 9C engine from the spares box, this engine is 2 mm larger than the kit engine.
Which means I had to get rid of a lot of plastic and thin the cowling, paper thin.
Cheers: Kent
-
Kent,
Beautiful work. It sure looks like you're building at decent pace. Keep going and enjoy the process.
Stuart
-
I agree with Stuart, I had no inkling that you've been working at a different pace on this one. I'm envious of the work you've done so far!
-
Nice progress. Your interior is looking great!
RAGIII
-
Nice work!!
Steve
-
Very good progress, Kent. You are building up some very fine detail.
-
Super work on those out of box details ;) The cowl does look super thin indeed , will even have a more realistic appearance in the end . The fire wall , is that the kit part ?
Alexis

Long time no see... Better late than never etc.
I have finally been able to get my self together and have achieve a little progress on the Morane.

Welcome back Kent, I hope you're doing well - your modelling skills certainly are! The cockpit looks fantastic and I'm very envious of your figure painting skills.

It's good to see your return to the forum, Kent.
Nice progress BTW. ;)

Beautiful work, Kent. Glad to see you back at it.

Kent, You have done a masterful job with that figure! Keep up the good work, 'looking forward to more.

Thank you kindly: Sandy, Zac, Bob, Gary & Harry
I seam to have some trouble with focusing and being able to concentrate, but I'm slowly getting there...
Cheers: Kent
-
Kent,
You did a superb job on scratch building the bulkhead behind the pilot's seat. I was just wondering if that was covered with fabric to prevent the fuselage from becoming a drag inducing windsock.
-
Kent
Your Morane Saulnier model is shaping up to be another of your masterpieces. I'm so happy this kit has helped your return to the hobby after your health issues.
And your figure painting skills are awesome- I am really impressed at how you brought this figure to life.
I will be sending a link to your build to Special Hobby who are keen to see their models being made.
Many thanks for sharing.

I was re reading Flying Fury this morning and came across McCudden mentioning a New Sgt. Pilot arriving at 3 squadron , none other than your Morane pilot Bayetto. He flew at lest one mission with McCudden as his Observer. in a two seat Morane Parasol. So I can now identify even more with your build 8)

Update on the Morane N build...
I've finally been able to spend some 'quality' time at the bench lately.
Parts are ready for assembly and the decals have been applied.
Now I'm a bit worried about how I will get the rigging done.
I'm still spending a lot of time in the different wards at the hospitals. But it's 'brightening' in the horizon.
Cheers: Kent
-
That's really good to hear you're on the mend, Kent.
Model is looking great, too 8)
Cheers and all the best from Canada,
Gary
-
Great to hear on your personal WiP as well as see progress on this lovely build, Kent. More power to you!
-
Thank you Gary & Zac, it's great to be back!
:D Kent
-
Truly great to hear you are getting better. And surely great to see you back to the bench. Lovely work on Morane...
-
Not sure how I missed this one, but she looks mighty fine Kent! I tackled this kit last year and the work you are doing on this one is fantastic. I also like the figure painting - this is one area I am awful at, so I am in envy of folks who can paint miniature folks :)
Glad also to year you're on the mend.
Cheers!

Hi Kent,
Great to see you working the Morane and even better knowing you seem to be on the up now health wise.
I've built the Type N and the rigging is less complicated than the Eindeckers.
It'll be a beauty when you're finished,
Mike
-
Glad to hear you are on the mend Kent :)
Also , fab work on the build so far , she is getting there and look forward to the next installment
Alexis

Like the others I am happy to hear you are on the mend. The Morane is Stunning. Looking forward to the next update!

Thank you PrzemoL, Brad, Mike Alexis & Rick...

The assembly went surprisingly well, I''ve reinforced both the main wings as well as the elevator planes with brass rod.

A beautiful Morane Kent.
Yes, the bracing work is still ahead of me too.
I think that will not be easy.
How will you proceed, first one side, i.e. top or bottom, or the same tension rope on both sides and then - as an example - rope top, rope bottom, rope top, rope bottom etc.?

Bertl

Beautiful work Kent, she's coming together very very nicely!

Wow, just caught this one - looking great
Sandy

Wow that went together very well!!
Steve

Absolutely amazing progress!

That's it, the finished Morane N... Ta Daa!
The rigging went really well with my own recipe. I've used some of the photoetched turnbuckles supplied in the kit.
+ some brass tubes... The Lewis machine gun is from the spares box, with the added photoetched details of the kit.

Great result, Kent. I don't think the weathering is overboard - looks right.
-
Having recently done this kit in the same scheme I can say you've done a magnificent job here Kent. Your rigging is particularly realistic and I really like the weathering as well. If this is any indication I'd say your recuperation has come along in leaps and bounds, well done and my sincere compliments, I know the challenges as I have a Son who suffered a brain injury.

Thanks for the comments on the weathering/dirt/smoke - I think the original plane of Hippolyte looks even more 'mucked' up ;)

Your very kind, thank you Lance. It has been very difficult indeed, how is your son now?
I guess I have been lucky, it looks like there will be no long term effects other than some speech difficulties.
Well that won't keep me from modelling ;)
Cheers: Kent
-
Thank you as well Kent. My Son has had a long (ten years now) journey however he's made progress in all areas. He's improved overall but his original injury was classified as severe (He was in a coma not expected to recover for a little over a month) He is now classified as disabled and thanks mostly to his spouse is living a reasonably comfortable life. Life is never a "cake walk", is it? That's just wonderful news on your prognosis, keep carving that plastic!

Hello Kent
I sent a link for your build thread to Special Hobby and they are so excited by your build they want to show it- credited to you- on their official blog.
It's fantastic to see our Forum members being valued like this by the hobby manufacturers and also strengthens the Forum's connection with the hobby industry.
I have also just sent a link to Bertl's astonishing Morane Saulnier build to Special Hobby to show what can be achieved with their kits and Special Hobby have advised they want to feature Bertl's build too.

I can only repeat what everyone else has said. I have built a Morane Saulnier N and it doesn't look as good as this. On a separate note you must have the worlds smallest paintbrush to do the eyeballs, buttons and badge on the figure.

Thank you Lance, Dave W, Willem, Syd Solo, Sandy & Alan.
That's really encouraging..
