Title: Fokker Triplane Orlik 1/33rd Scale
Post by: NinetythirdLiberator on December 30, 2021, 06:39:58 AM
All,
I'm starting another little model from a manufacturer I have not used before. The kit looks nice and well detailed. I'm just not a fan of the color scheme so I'm going to do a repaint with the ol' airbrush.

I've wanted to make this iconic fighter for a long time to go with my other WWI fighters so I'm chuffed.  Plus, it will be fun to see how it stands up next to the "WNW" and Roden kits.  I've built the Roden Dr.1 and enjoyed the experience.

I'll start soon...Dan

Hi Kevin!

Same to you and yours.  I think this week will be a nice time to get some paper modeling done.  We don't start school until the 4th.  We went out today for the first time since the snow and were ok once we got out of our hilly circle!  I bet it's a bit icier and snowier on your side.

Nice to hear from you and I hope this Dr.1 is a good start for 2022!

Thanks, One and All!

I did some embossing of rib tapes...but they are hard to get pictures of.  But I also got some basic fuselage and cockpit parts cut out and stuck to some 1/32nd balsa.  I also needed to sand it a bit to make it slightly thinner so everything would match up.  Steady as she goes and more cockpit interior tonight!

Looking great Dan!  Are the fuselage interior sides mounted on 1/32 balsa too?  Did you make thin it?  Will the fuselage side exteriors simply be glued onto the other side of the balsa?  Thanks.

Best regards,

Bob

Thanks for all the interest!

Bob:  Yes...those parts are all backed with balsa and I absolutely needed to thin them.  I'm just sanding until they fit in their respective slots rather than using calipers etc.  So far, all is going well, though.  I am looking forward to getting it partially assembled soon.  That will be telling!

Evening, All!

I started some more innards today: the beginning of the control column and the seat.  I need to add some shoulder harnesses that are not supplied and the control wires need to be added.  I also need to add triggers and the wooden grips on the joy stick.  Sure will look cool when done.

Cheers,
Dan

Thanks Bob and Rick!

Bob:  I'm using stretched sprue from a Revell 1/72nd B-17 I got for Christmas!! That's for the control grip, rudder bar etc.  The other "tubes" are all just printed and could be enhanced by just adding stretched sprue right over the printed parts.  I don't know if I'll do that or not, but maybe.  That would make my eventual shoulder harnesses look better. Oh!  And the curved parts for your boots/heels are from bendy fuse wire.  It's a bit thick, but easy to mold to shape around a paint brush handle.

More soon and thanks for the interest.

Started getting the fuselage proper together. Lots of careful fitting but the kit parts so far are really, really close and the body is, on the whole, going to be straight and true (I think)!

I did end up taking out the "fuel pump" that's on the right inside as none of my references show it. I think it depended on where the fuel tank was so Dr-1s may have just been gravity fed. I also could find no reference for the instrument the plans show behind the aux throttle on the left inside. I think this is supposed to be the compass (?) so I moved it to the right hand side floor which is where my references show it. I need to make an altimeter and some magneto parts too.  I did get my rudder and elevator controls in though along with some shoulder harness work for the seat.

Still, coming along nicely.

Dan

There's definitely a lot more to paper/card models than I thought - the possibilities are endless! I'm keen to see how this build progresses as I'm really enjoying all the extra work you're putting in.

Excellent work on correcting the compass location and removing the pump! The Dr1, DVI, and EV all used a simple valve arrangement. Here is a shot of the Meng/ WNW DR1 as an example.

Thank you, everybody and thanks for the reference, Rick!  This is why this is such an awesome forum.

I got the main fuselage parts done and started skinning the bottom and one side. Almost a shame I'm going to repaint this, as everything is fitting really well. Sometimes the skins don't match up mostly due to poor cutting by the builder!  But it will be unique once painted up and done too! Plus, I could always get another one for $5 and use the printed skins as is! Kicking myself that I didn't scan it before I started cutting.  Live and learn... ::)

More soon and Happy Sunday,
Dan

I agree about the panels.  I guess it gives a bit more backing so the form will be solid and won't sag.  On the other hand, it's just like the original if the white pieces are plywood and the skins are fabric.  I'm having fun with this one and it's going together really nicely.

Dan, are you sure you're not an agent of Big Card Model sent here to convert us? If not...you should be!  ;D I'm very impressed at the extra work you're able to put in to elevate the model beyond what's suggested by the kit.

Just like the real thing!

Thanks, Zac.  No...no ulterior motive here!  But hey, if folks want to try one, go for it!  I like these since they mix some plastic skills and balsa/tissue skills.  Plus, these paper models do seem to be put together more like the real machines...like those ply panels on the sides!

My trouble is that I like them all...........too many WNW models and too many paper models and too many Airfix models, Special Hobby etc., etc., etc.

Here is the state of affairs as of Sunday night.  I'll need to build my additional instruments and install them and then I'll start the cowling.  Then, on to the wings.  Really starting to look like a Fokker now.

Cheers and have a good week,
Dan

Some final stuff for the evening...

I got the elevators done and just tacked them on along with the rudder to see how she looks.  Very triplane-like to me!

Next I'll be priming this, likely sanding edges and then start experimenting with some Fokker Factory Finish!  We'll see where that leads.

Thanks for looking,

Thanks Kevin and Zac!  Those photos may come in handy someday... ::)

I started the "priming, sanding, filling, sanding and priming again" process.  You can see the raw edges and bits of schmutz after the first primer run.  Also, steps were manifested on the lower fuselage sides.  After some putty and sanding, though...the last couple of shots show it's pretty much ready for color.  I'm treating this just like a plastic model but just being a bit more gentle with the sanding process.

The only thing that didn't go to plan was that my embossing from the back side needs to be heavier as you can barely see the stab/elevator/rudder lines.  I'll need to go over the wings before I skin them if I want them a little more pronounced.

Looks nice, though!  Can't wait to start spraying.  I think I'll mix some turquoise for the lower parts tonight and maybe give it a spray!  We'll see.

Thanks for looking,
Dan

Thanks so much, you guys.  Very much appreciated!

Bob: I'm using Tamyia paints thinned with isopropanol.  Seems to cover just fine and nothing wrinkles etc.

I started painting!  I got the bottom of the fuselage covered in a Fokker turquoise (at least I think it looks ok), masked it off and shot white on the tails and fuselage sides for the eventual crosses and tail markings.  It's going to have cool black and white stripes on the stab from Jasta 6 so stay tuned.  I also got the cowling painted an olive drab color that I hope is close to what was used in the Fokker Factory.  More soon...Dan

P.S.  For those interested or with more time on your hands than you know what to do with, I'm making a build log of this model on Youtube if you are so inclined to see some techniques an Hollywood-style videos (ha, ha)

Evening, All!

Here is my attempt at the elusive streaking.  I still need to put the little, tiny turquoise wrap on the bottom longeron and tomorrow, I'll be putting the black stripes on the stab/elevators along with the crosses on the rudder and fuselage.  Looking Fokkery from my perspective.

Cheers,

Hi Rick and thanks for the interest... :D

I cut a little cheap brush to about 0.25 cm (maybe 0.5cm) thinking that's about 1/33rd scale what may have been used, and then I just loaded the brush and painted free hand with olive drab trying to think how a worker would have done it at arm's length.  I've heard they basically slapped it on and didn't re-load until needed so that's all an estimate.  I figure instead of faking it, just paint it like they did (supposedly) and it should come out ok.  The base is a very light deck tan color that's my CDL approximation for this.

I hope to get to that tail tonight!

Dan

Thanks so much, Zac and Rick!  I'm aiming to have it look nice next to my Roden example.  We'll see!

I got the mid wing done.  Aside from some sanding of the leading edge of the formers (there were 22 of them slotted around a flat spar) to make sure the trailing edges matched, all went incredibly smoothly.  Even the wing tips are very Dr. I-ish.  I'm pleased.  I think I'll try the lower wing next as that one supposedly has the wire inside so we'll see how that matches up. I'll get all the wings made (and the sub-wing too) before I paint them all at once.

Thanks for looking,
Dan

Hello All,

Thanks for the comments.  I'm just having fun!  I'm glad folks are enjoying the ride. ;D

I started the bottom wings.  Even though there are two bits of piano wire to position the bottom wing, I think I'll just use the leading edge member.  That will make it easier to get it installed and I'll have some wiggle room too.  I'll work on the other side tomorrow and start seeing if the I-struts line up too.  So far, everything is square and true and the bottom wing looks nice and flat like it's supposed to.  I tend to get my triplane lower wings to droop far too often.

Getting exciting now!

Thanks Rick and Zac.  Yes...the wings went together quite well if I do say so myself.  8)

I got a bit more done today.  Painted and streaked the wings, made the I-struts and got the markings on.  Sadly, I need to redo the top markings as, in person, you can see some white spray/mist into the cross edges in a few places.  I guess my tape cross masks must not have been as tight on the surface as I thought.    Can't be touched up so it'll need to be redone.  :-\  But...the general idea looks great and is sound.

More soon...Dan

Thanks so much, Zac!

Here is the state of play as of Sunday night.  I fixed the wing crosses so they are not foggy anymore, added some red chevrons on the wing tip leading edges for some variety and painted my ID on the plane so others in the squadron can see who is running away!  The Smith coat of arms is the jelly fish with a vertical yellow stripe and the saying: Retreat!  Always Surrender.

Next will be some tail cables, tail struts and skid.  Then, I'll start putting the wings on starting with the bottom wing first.

Thanks for looking...and have a great week.
Dan

Gorgeous work Dan, I love the refinements (to be fair I didn't notice the fogginess in the original photos).

Thanks, Guys.  This one is really fun.  It's also daunting too since there is so much documentation and the machine is a favorite of so many folks.  Gotta do it justice in paper!

I did lots of little things like put on the control cables for the rudder and elevators and touched up the leading edges of the wings since the color demarcation appears to be rather sharp and not how I had left it. I painted the turquoise edging that wraps up the lower fuselage longeron as well.  I also added the datum line with a ruler and thin Sharpie marker. I also got the bottom wing on and added the lower I-struts. Finally, I put on the top midwing covering. Next, I'll add the tail struts and start re-engineering the MG mounts. They are very simplified and just don't look right. The ammo chutes are in the wrong place and some more tubing needs to be added in the cockpit.  So...a bit of head scratching will be in order.

More soon!
Dan

Thank you, Zac and Alexis!  Just trying to emulate the great models seen here on a daily basis.  :)

Only a tiny update.  I got the stab struts completed and installed the tail skid.  Next I WILL start the machine guns.  ;D

Thanks, Rick...I must say the streaking turned out better than I expected.  I saw a Meng 1/24th Triplane write-up where the fellow used decals for the streaking that looked great!  But I was pleased that my painting job looked dang close.  I'll use this method again!

Cheers,

I daresay she'd fit in perfectly with photos of 1/32 injected kits and that many folk will be hard-pressed to tell the difference!

Looking just wonderful, Dan!  Looking forward to the finished Dreidecker.

Rick, check out Dan’s YouTube build videos on this project for a detailed demonstration of his Fokker streaking.  It’s really good, and you can see it happening!  I think there’s a link earlier in this thread.

Best regards,

Thank you Rick, Zac and Bob!  Really made some headway today...

I tried making the guns with the paper jackets and attempted to slot them.  It was ok, but the rest of the plane is turning out so nicely, I figured I'd splurge and use photo-etch from an old WNW kit.  I do like the look of actually seeing the cooling part of the cooling jackets!  Kind of cheating, but I won't tell anyone.

I also reconfigured the ammo feeds as they were very simplified and totally inaccurate in the kit.  Mine are not perfect either, but a bit closer to the real thing.  I still need to add a cross member under the gun butts and add the gun butt pads as well.  The paper gun breaches and components looks great with some black paint and a bit o' dry brushing with silver.

I was sort of on a roll, I'd been test fitting the top wing on the I-struts and just committed some glue et voila!  Top wing is partially on and dang if it isn't straight.  I've never put a plastic triplane together that came out this straight on the first go.  Double dang.  Next hurdle will be the cabanes which I hope will go together with little drama.

Cool beans.  Man...this is a nice model and does look every inch a
Fokker Dr. I.  My complements to the designer!

Dan

Dan, by that rationale using PE, resin or vac parts on an injected kit is cheating! I think you're totally justified  8)

Thanks Kevin, Zac and Rick!

Zac:  I'm not losing any sleep over it!  I agree with you.  I was just going for some purity but what the heck?  Looks much nicer this way.

Kevin:  I was out in PO yesterday with my daughter looking for motorcycle helmets.  She wants her bike endorsement.  We ate at a taco/bar place overlooking the base and water right by the foot ferry.  Beautiful day for it.  Plus...we stopped at a chocolate shop and got some goodies.  You live in a fun place!

Now on to the Dr. I!

I got the cabanes and subwing with associated landing gear struts installed.  I may work on the wheels/tires today.  Or do a bit of rigging.  Almost there.  Only huge thing left is the ol' engine!

Dan
Title: Re: Fokker Triplane Orlik 1/33rd Scale
Post by: NinetythirdLiberator on February 14, 2022, 03:57:47 PM
Got a bit more done.  The tires/wheels are part paper and part sandwiched balsa.  I tried painting the typical Fokker swirl with some success.  I may redo those.  We'll see.  Looks nice on it's own wheels.  The cowling is just tacked on so we can see the overall look.  My only concern now is that I think the landing gear leg attachments to the lower fuselage are too close together.  The angle made by those and the subwing look too acute.

Oh well...maybe next time.  Overall, looking nice.  Some bits of rigging next and then the engine and a couple of details and she'll be done.

Cheers,
Dan

Thanks Zac and Alexis!  You guys looking at the progress really helps this along.

Today I finished the wheels and I also repositioned the rear landing gear legs further back under the wing.  I think the angle between the legs is much better.  As designed in the model, it just seems funny and pinched.  Now, it looks more like the real machine.

Next will be lots of little details like gun butt pads, cockpit edging, foot steps, rigging and control cables.  I also need to still add at least one cross member in the cockpit and also a gauge on the top forward fuselage between the guns.  The last thing will be the engine. I want to make it spin so that will be fun.  I'll also try to use the kit prop, but I have a nice plastic one if it doesn't turn out looking nice.

Thanks for looking,
Dan

Hello Dan,
I'm glad you made it over to this side of the Narrows" for a day. Funny thing, I was over on your side at "Skyway" wondering if
I'd run in to you. Anyway, I think you've got the angel of the landing gear struts just right. On paper it looks like this plane might fly.

TThe last thing will be the engine. I want to make it spin so that will be fun.
When I build a model of a rotary-powered machine I like the engine to spin so 1) I can show people why they're called rotaries and b) it's a lot more fun to play with  ;D

Thanks, Alexis.  Much appreciated.

I got the main parts done.  I still need to add the spark plugs, wires and some fiddly bits on the ends but it looks cool and spins like a top. I also tried an experiment using some flexible, brown plastic tubing folks use for tying flies when fishing for the intakes.  They look fine and were easy to install.

Making rotary engine noises right now...

Thanks Zac and Rick!

Here is the next to last post.  I got the engine and cowling on and the engine does spin...just not as freely as I'd have liked.  It was just too close to the inner cowling if all the little valve bits were added but it still looks nice.  I also added some details like the rigging, aileron cables, wing skids and the plastic prop I painted to look like laminated wood.  Finally, I got the gun butt pads installed too.  Those have been bugging me for a while.

Lots of little things to do as far as final details, but the finish line is really close.

More soon in the completed section...Dan

Thanks, PWP and Tim!

I think with your skills, Tim, almost anything would be good.  It may be more important to pick something you like and then there's a better chance of finishing.  Maybe something like a Nieuport which is smaller (even in 1/33rd scale).  Let me see what I've got and I'll PM you some more ideas.

Thanks to both of you for the interest.  And thanks, PWP, re: the videos.  I do like posting those and more will be arriving soon on the Avro.

Amazing stuff Dan, not only the building part, but you didn't like the color scheme....
Don't know if I will ever tackle one of these, the size alone prohibits that. Not for another year or so will we have the space for something like this. (We are building our retirement home and I'm promised free reign for building and display area)
You continue to amaze us, who knew paper could be so much fun....
