Further reducing my stash of WNW kits. The turn now is on this early WW1 bird, though with long service, as the kit instruction indicates it was still flyable in 1917.
The work on cockpit is underway since over two weeks. In particular the internal rigging is quite demanding with about 50 lines not counting the control cables. And at the moment just 10 lines are ready. New experience for me is here, too, as for the first time I am using Uschi elastic line alongside the fishing line. It is so because in many spots the strength is not necessary and I do not wish to stress the delicate parts too much. More of it will come with that lovely net of control lines for the tail and wing warping.
But that later and in the meantime step by step forward...

Excellent work as usual, Prze. It will be a very enjoyable build to follow.
Great start, my friend!
Cheers,

Lovely start, Prze.
I'm sure you will enjoy yourself with this model.
Cheers,

Excellent start on what is sure to be another Beauty!
RAGIII

This is already looking like a beautiful and detailed build, Przemo! Lovely work, and I will follow along and pay close attention... there is so much to learn from your talented hands! Regards, Marc.

This is a great start!
The kit seems to be very nice, I can only dream of such quality in 1/48.
The turn now is on this early WW1 bird, though with long service, as the kit instruction indicates it was still flyable in 1917.
The progress in only some years is most impressive, if you compare this plane with a modern one from 1917!

Frank

Great looking start!
I really like your wood sections. I'm guessing oils on an acrylic base, but what base and what oil colours?

Thank you very much for all your kind comments.
More work on the cockpits which are now basically complete. Next on the bench will be Argus engine.

You always make it look sooooo easy! Great start of probably the WNW kit i most regret not snaring. Cheers Matt

Wonderful cockpit work, Prez -
I've no doubt this is going to be another one of your gems when eventually completed.

Wonderful start so far Pzre !
What's your thoughts on the Uschi line ?
Alexis

Thank you everyone.
What's your thoughts on the Uschi line ?
Alexis
I am struggling to use it in the same manner as I use the fishing line - i.e. eyelets and tubes. I do not like the look of the line just glued to the drilled hole. Well, it is doable but tricky, the line likes to be attracted to anything around, especially another sections of itself, it is not so stiff so pushing it through the polyimide tube is not easy. Besides it is evident that it is not round in cross-section, the flattness of the section is evident under magnifying glass. Also it is clearly thinner than 0.12mm fishing line and I will have to minimize places where both types are used side by side. Yet, I see no other choice to rig the delicate structure of this bird with those flexible pylons at the wing tips and the tail. I am getting experience but I will gladly return to ordinary biplanes models and to the fishing line. ;)
And in the meantime, after a couple of hours yesterday I managed to rig the right-hand side fuselage half. The left-hand side tonight :)

-
Wow, just wow! That's stunning!
--------
I had the same experience with Ushi thread on my 1/72 Fokker D.VII and Albatros D.Va. On those models I did glue it directly into drilled holes but when I touched it with CA it curles up and is very hard to install.
On my 1/32 D.VII I found it's 'stick to itself' useful for the internal rigging where there are those 'loops' moulded in the corners of the fuselage frames, as I could thread it in a loop then it sticks to itself. Add a drop of glue and some white glue on top to simulate the fabric covering of the turnbuckles inside.
Other than that I found it a frustrating experience, so whenever possible I've not used it again except when really, really needed.
I'm glad it's not just me!
-
All those wires, and to my eye they look perfect! I'm excited to follow along with this beauty.
-
Prez, Re the delicate rigging on the warping surfaces you could try the Modelkasten stretch which now seems more readily available
-
Thanks. Also for the hint on the Modelkasten.
And in the meantime the leftside was rigged. The lines with turnbuckles prepared, 6 with Uschi elastic and 10 with fishing line.
And after some time installed.
Then the test of fuselage fit.
But it will be separated because the engine must be installed first. And trust me, all the lines and the turnbuckles (50 of them!) can be viewed through the huge cockpit openings and they will not be obscured by any upper wing. ;)
And now to Argus!
-
As always your rigging/bracing wires look awesome. It is a nice change to know that all of that beautiful work will be seen !
RAGIII
-
Hi Prze, after seeing this first on FB I'm happy to catch more progress here. Your interior work, especially the rigging and turnbuckles & attachment points is brilliant. Plenty of it to be seen through those large cockpit openings, too. Stunning work on the cockpit all around.
This is the one WnW kit I never did pick up with regret.
Cheers,
Gary

Very nice detail work, with all the wires, Przemol.
-
Wonderful work, Prze! Superb rigging and very clean. I am very curious for your intepretation of this Taube.
Bye,Manni

Many thanks for watching and leaving very nice comments.
And from the front, I have painted the engine elements.
These are the kit parts but I will add the valve push rods, electric wires, control linkages and fuel lines.
-
Very nice -also nice to see how apparently WNW kept improving -on their Mercedes D.III there were no hose clamps and throttle connectors and such. Must have been quite a challenge to paint those clamps so neatly!
-
Excellent painting detail. I like the way this project is going.
-
Excellent work on the Engine. I am sure it will be a model in itself when completed!
RAGIII
-
Thanks again.
Indeed, Jeroen, the WNW kits were better and better. Pity, that it is the long gone past.
As for the painting of clamps, I have just used the brand new 0 size brush and it went smoothly, fragment after fragment with just some patience.
Today I managed to assemble the engine and to test-fit it. When doing it I realised that I overlooked the hint from the instructions to trim the fuselage opening to allow for two front valve pushrods, luckily it was not too late and I did not do any damage.
Needless to say, all the engine bay calls for some dirt, and there are still the plate decals to be applied.

The engine weathered and fitted with those linkages I wanted to add. Now the fuselage can be closed and the lower water pipes can be attached. The carb side will be open, the other one - closed.

Thank you...
And Taube finally looks like Taube. Fuselage seams are treated, wings and tail attached, the control cables attach points fitted with eyelets, spoke wheels made from Alb B.II PE pieces (luckily found in my spare box) because I damaged the thin spokes in the Taube PE pieces. The former ones are a bit thicker and thus easier to work on. The u/c is just dry fitted to the fuselage for the picture.

Thanks. This one is on the bench since the first days of November, 6 weeks up till now. And I may just be able to have it completed at the end of this year 8)

Continuing to be exceptionally nice work, Przemol. Those wheels do look very good, and very nice detail work around the engine.
-
Przemol,
I just caught up to your build on this. Wow. Inspiring. Now I wish I had bought one of these before WNW's demise. I wouldn't come close to what you've done with it, but it's such a beautiful flying machine. Nice job.
Stuart

Thank you, Kensar and Stuart.
And for today - a small upgrade of the kit elements - those massive turnbuckles were not convincing me ;)

Thank you.
More work done: 60 eyelets for rigging attached, the body masked in preparation for main colouring and a quite promising attempt (imho) for machined metal panels - this on the inside of the panel which will not be attached to my model. I hope the exposed surfaces will not be worse.

The panel effect is a purely coincidential discovery. I was experimenting with metal colours, airbrushed the Duraluminium Vallejo Metal Color and then painted the thin "veins" of Dark Aluminium using the 1-grade brush. But the result was not satisfactory as the dark colour was not uniformly opaque. Being lazy I decided not to remove the paint but to cover it with airbrushed Duraluminium to start once more. And after a thin layer out of the sudden this amazing effect emerged. The colour unevenness disappeared and it seems that the airbrushed Duraluminium colour over the brush painted background reflects the light differently then the one on the airbrushed background with interchanging dark-bright effects depending on the angle of view. Exactly the effect I was looking for!
Now my only worry is if I am able to repeat this on the outer panel sides...

I tried replicating this once by painting a base coat of a metal color, then tinting that same metal color darker and thinning it. I used a very very fine brush to paint miniature swirls. It still came out heavy handed looking and the colors had too much contrast. I think I should have gone lighter for the swirls instead. Your method sounds a lot easier and looks far more realistic. Thank you for sharing how you did it.

Meanwhile, the upper side got postshading. Now to the underside.
You may note there are some small damages due to manipulations in the spraying booth, one of tail rigging struts and the upper rudder mast went off. Luckily, they are not lost and will be reattached during the final assembly.

Rigging complete!
The last missing bit is the propeller. The plan is to carve it from veneers but they are late so I will probably paint the kit one and attach it temporarily.

Rigging with Uschi elastic is feasible but it takes me at least 3 times more time and I honestly say I will be happy to get back to fishing line 😉
At first I have to say your rigging (as the complete model!) looks great! That's why I use also often elastic rigging, because it is always straight.
But here I thought that because of the size and weight of the wings, functional rigging with fishing line would be necessary? At least I use it on monoplanes.
I really hope for you that it stays as it is now in long term.
Cheers,
Frank

Wow! That rigging looks amazing Przemo, and great progress! It's nearly there! Regards, Marc

Thank you Frank for your interest. Yet, this kit seems to be better designed than Eindeckers. The fuselage sides have substantial stubs to which the wings are attached. The only way for them to bend or drop down would be the significant deformation of the fuselage shell. Basically, in the kit they sustain their self weight without any rigging. Moreover, since the pylons over and under the fuselage are solid triangles-based structures, I decided to make those 16 lines supporting the wings from 0.12 fishing line. The kit structure is very sturdy now 🙂
-
A superb Taube, lovely work as per usual!
All that rigging makes my eyes water ;)
Andrew

Thank you, Andrew.
I have made a temporary propeller to put my Taube to the shelf. But I am waiting for the veneers to carve one more appropriate.
