Title: New Kits and Accessories Reviewed!
Post by: Brad Cancian on October 25, 2021, 06:20:16 PM
Hi all,

I just wanted to quickly draw everyone's attention to the "New and Old Kits - Add Ons" board that the forum has running:

https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?board=10.0 (https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?board=10.0)

For those that may not be aware, the forum is very kindly supported by many companies who send us review items. These items often consist of brand new kits, tools, or accessories. It is here that the moderator team posts reviews of those kits and accessories that we get from our VERY generous sponsors. Recently we have had items provided from a range of manufacturers, including (in alphabetical order) Copper State Models, Eduard, ICM, Kovozávody Prostějov Models, Pheon, Roden, Special Hobby, and many more.

Some recent examples include reviews of the Eduard 1/72 Albatros D.V, the Kovozávody Prostějov 1/72 Sopwith Triplane, the Eduard 1/48 Sopwith Camel, the Roden 1/32 SPAD XIII (including a great think piece by Dave), some great Pheon decal sets, the Special Hobby 1/32 Fokker D.II, the CSM Nieuport, and many, many more! We're constantly adding reviews to the board, so check them out.

I would also like to draw member's attention to the "World of Scale Models" board:

https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?board=106.0 (https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?board=106.0)

Here we also review non-WW1 kits also kindly donated by our sponsors; for example, the board contains reviews of the particularly wonderful Special Hobby 1/72 Messerschmitt BF-109E-4, Special Hobby 1/48 Oxford, and the Special Hobby 1/32 Westland Whirlwind, amongst others.

The moderating team goes quite a long way to make sure we provide solid reviews of these items - please jump over and take a look at some of the really quite wonderful items we have kindly been provided by our sponsors!

I understand that many of you may check here in the "what's new" board more often than in the "New and Old Kits" or "World of Scale Modelling" boards - hence, we will continue to add to this thread as we post new items, just so you folks can stay up to speed with the latest reviews. So, subscribe to this thread and you'll get notified when we post something new.

As always, many thanks and Model On!

Cheers,

Brad (on behalf of the moderating team)

Yes, me too -I have the D.VII and it's a great kit. One problem though: it's hard to get motivated to finish my MAC-Roden kitbashed D.VIIs now!

Interesting Eduard went with a red tailplane on the Jasta 18 D.VII
I was under the impression the tailplanes, rudder and ailerons did not have rib tapes? Nothing some research and a bit of sanding can't fix if it's the case, on the other hand, Eduard usually does good reasearch so I could very well be in error as well :)

Hi Brad,

Hat off to an excellent review, outling a problem and offering fixes, too!
However, I do feel that KP really goofed here.
If I do get one (I'm happy that there are new 1/72 kits and will gladly support them!) it'll be the Swallow, even if it is not as colourful. :)

Here's what's possible with this kit (not my build, and taken from the Special Hobby website, bit it's too nice a build not to re-post):

Thanks Dave, great review. Certainly a unique a/c and deserving of being kitted like this. It appears that two of the decal options are presentation a/c, no?  I've always found those very visually interesting.

Thanks for another great review Brad. I well remember having a talk with Vladimir Sulc at the IPMS Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia in 2005 and pleading with him to do a 1/72nd scale Nie.17. He admitted to me that not only the scale, but this a/c in particular, was one of his favorites. Sadly, it didn't generate the income that he and the developers had hoped.
I have two sitting on the shelf of doom waiting for me to come back to them. I modeled myself in to a corner with them (couldn't leave well enough alone). My only criticism for the kit is the shade of blue for the roundels and tail, it seems every resource I've consulted says it should be more of an ultramarine rather than that light "powder blue" color.

Just my two centimes.

The P40 review is posted on our World of Scale Models board - the place where members can discuss non-WW1 subjects. I'm sure you would appreciate that many of our members are not just WW1 only modellers.

The World of Scale Models board is the home for all those non WW1 topics and we also feature reviews of non WW1 kits there.

All of our reviews are also previewed in the ongoing New Kits and Accessories info thread on Whats New. However our review boards are in two places- the WW1 related items and the non WW1 kits on the World of Scale Models board.

As lovely as this old kit is, I think fifty US dollars is "somewhat" overpriced .. as most of Eduard's recent offerings.

Hey Gene, I sympathize. I try and shop locally but I am using the48ers.com more often. They are in Cyprus. While that exact Albatros is currently not in stock it sells for 17.46 Euros. Being on par with the US dollar right now means the only addition is shipping which is relatively inexpensive and arrives in a couple of weeks. No involvement with the operation other than as a satisfied customer.

Hi folks

Our latest product review has just been uploaded to the Forum.

This time it's an outstanding new reference book - Modelling and Painting World War 1 Allied Figures
By Forum member Mike Butler.

This is a brilliant 'how to' book to guide us through the nuances of painting realistic WW1 Allied figures.

It's an absolute 'must have' reference book for figure painters and the link to my review on the Magazines and Books board is here:

I've been thinking for a while about branching into some figure painting; my early attempts in 1/48 have been pretty comical, so i've also just put in my order for Mike's book. This looks like an amazing resource.

Cheers,

Appreciate your support Mike & trust you’re able to put it to practical use quickly. Also neat to get your entry for my “Henry” bust.
Keep us posted on what you find most useful as you work through the book.

Trust you’ll find the book helps Brad.
I’m an experimental modeller & not trying to sell a particular product or approach. Instead help modellers understand what works for them & how to have a Plan > Do > Check > Adjust to developing their own approach.
Will be good to see what you think of it too.

Maybe derailing this thread a bit but I just want to comment on Mike Butler's book. Every now and then a book comes along that really changes the landscape. We all know Shep Paine's diorama book (and those gloss diorama building pamphlets in Monogram kits) took modeling to the next level. Verlinden and all the current Spanish companies built their empires based on his techniques. Bill Horan released a pretty  good figure painting volume as well. I have to say Mr. Butler's book will stand on the shelf every bit these previous releases equal. Excellent (and a bit nostalgic) drawings, perfect photography, clear demonstrations and explanations make this an extremely valuable resource. The use of gouache paint, texturing various paints etc etc are all new to me but even seasoned vets will gain further knowledge from this book. It is fascinating to watch the figure progress from googley eyed zombie through to the finished, beautifully painted figure. The real beauty of this book is, through all the demonstrations, the underlying voice can be heard saying "You can do this." I love this book, as a reference and as a source of eye candy. Thank you Mike Butler. I ordered mine through Book Depository - UK to Canada in 8 days for $30.93C

Wow!! Thank you Steve for taking the time to share your thoughts.
Especially pleasing to see you find value from my book & plan to put it to use.
Being compared to likes of Shep, Francois & Bill Is particularly kind.
I deliberately wanted a variety of aids like the sketches & photos to help different learning styles as was keen to make it as accessible to wide range of modellers. I’m proud to have had my son Ed contribute his art too. He is one of a number of people I collaborated with to produce this book which is really a team effort.
Please do consider sending me details to enter you in a draw for my bust “Henry”.
Gratefully yours,
MikeTheKiwi

Hi all - super quick note to let you know that reviews will recommence here within the next week or so, now that I am back on deck.

I am currently reaching out to some of our sponsors to see if they have any news for us on future releases and review items, stay tuned! :)

Lastly, for those that have not seen it, I have made a broader announcement about where the future of the forum may be headed (it's tucked away in the announcements section so might not be obvious to everyone) post the passing of Dave Wilson. The post is here -

https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=14381.0

Note that I am very keen on your thoughts / ideas on how we can best present products and news to you all. Please jump in an leave me your thoughts on any aspect of the announcement over in that thread.

Thanks!

BC
