Title: Question on 5-color French airplanes
Post by: Big Sky Modeler on October 07, 2021, 01:20:06 AM
Does anyone know if the underside colors (Ecru and Blanc Bleute) had aluminum powder added to the mix or not?

Early French planes were doped yellow and did not have aluminum powder in the dope.  Later planes (mid 1916 and later, I believe) did have the aluminum powder mixed with the yellow dope, which, on aging turned more of a biege color.
At least, this is what I remember from my research on SPADs.

The funny thing is I have read it both ways, yes and no, when talking about the 5 color scheme's undersides. ( From reliable sources)  IIRC the SPAD XIII Data File says yes but I will need to double check.
