One fiddly build finished, must be time to start another one :D
My next project will be a Nieuport 27 as usual in 1/72, here's the box and sprue shot (i've pre-primed it all with my usual white plastic primer)
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51246078948_5604e73777_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m5rxTj)
I added the batten behind the cockpit area as there's no panel behind the seat so this area looked a little plain, then set to with the paint brush followed by a bit of rigging.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51294709355_5afcfe4854_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2m9JN1B)
The frame broke on removing it from the sprue despite my best efforts at being careful, it should also have a tacho gauge in the top right corner which seems to have broken off (it was never there when i opened the bag for the first time), i'll see if i can add something to that area. The seat had a solid back but it should have holes in it so i got the drill out. Wish i'd noticed it before applying the glue but the locating holes under the seat are not square meaning the seat is not square to the frame and it will probably notice once inside the fuselage. By the time i realised the glue was holding so rather than risk damage i chose to leave it

I just gave the engine 1 coat of anthracite followed by some metallic steel dry brushing, i think it looks better to the naked eye than in the pic

Nice start, the framework looks good!

It's always good to see another Nieuport being built.

Good to see another aircraft in the Correct Scale.Isuspect that most people looking at the model will not notice the slightly mis-aligned seat. Good extra internal detail though.
Stephen.
-
Great to see more a/c being built in the one true scale, plus . . . . it's a Nieuport!!! ;D
Sorry 'bout the seat.
FWIW I think your rotary looks great in the pic.

Great progress EB. I hope the 1/72 Nie27 is a better kit than the 1/32 one - especially fuselage sides matching together.
Dontcha just love that RFC/French scheme - hope that's what you're aiming for.
Good modelling

it's not a roden kit without some sort of fit issue ;)
I was originally going to do the rather colourful scheme but have decided on one of the aluminium examples instead for this build

Excellent start! Your framework looks terrific. I am looking forward to your next update!

Good work! Looking forward to seeing more of it.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing this come together. The 20 pence piece gives a real sense of just how tiny this is in 1/72 and why I have great respect for the results people like you achieve in this scale.

Love the work on the inside.

thanks for all the comments and for following this little project

thanks for the comment, i do hate dealing with such fiddly parts but then there's a nice sense of achievement when things go well :D
been ploughing on with the 27 build, for a roden kit it's gone together quite well so far
I gave the seat area a wash with burnt umber to darken it a bit and make it slightly more woody, also added some luxuries like a control stick or two.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51299308942_a6f8bf43e7_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2ma9niQ)
There's quite a bit of space around the seat and controls which makes a nice change. The hole in the bottom of the fuselage isn't big enough to go over the cockpit area on the lower wing so it needs assembling on to the lower wing in two halves.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51300052036_89d3916891_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2madbcN)
The fuselage fit is generally good but there's no positive location for the wings to fit on the fuselage, this lead to a lot of measuring and tweaking while the glue started to set. If the wings are fitted square to the bottom of the fuselage then they're a mile out of alignment at the wing tips so they ended up being fixed to the fuselage at an angle. A bit of filler needed here and also around the half moon panel at the front but nothing major.

Filling and sanding done,

Top seam isn't too bad at all and the wings look square

Here's the wonky seat
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51300051971_2fb2539280_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2madbbF)
A quick blast of primer to hide the evidence and check for any seam issues, also fitted horizontal stabiliser

The cabanes are going body colour so the next job is top wing test fitting so i can get them glued in place then painting can commence.

Great (and fast) progress on your N27!
Looking good so far

Great work on making sure the wings are aligned! Looking Fantastic overall!

Very good progress and quick too. Glad you got the lower wing sorted out - it is really annoying when something which should be simple throws up a series of problems.
Stephen.

Well done so far sir! I don't think anyone will notice the wonky seat.

I enjoy following these build threads as they have so much useful information. Great job so far. I hope to attempt this model some day.

thanks forthe comment, you really should build one, so far it's been one of the better 1/72 roden kits i've built
the 27 is finally in paint after 3 attempts, i'd decided to go with the aluminium version so used tamiya acrylic which went on really nice but for some reason the paint just wouldn't dry, it felt dry to the touch but if i held the model i was leaving finger prints in the paint. I removed this paint and tried revells enamel which i had trouble getting on the model with a smooth finish so i've ended up spraying it with halfords aluminium. Finish is smooth and dry so i'll get a coat of gloss on it for decals and hopefully this project can move forward again. I also lost the step in the paint process somewhere so i'll have to make one from stretched sprue.

I remember building this kit , and it is one of Rodens better 72 scale . I like the finish , nicely done and should looks excellent with the markings .

Great stuff EBF, let's build more and more Nieuports!

thanks it certainly is one of rodens better kits and i've got a feeling i'll be building another one

i can definately see more Nieuports on my horizon ;D
underside decals are now done, for roden decals they behaved themselves quite well but i did have the water quite cold as i'd read that this can help the roden decals stay together. The film around the decals was quite big and thick, they were also quite shiny so i applied 2 coats of future then gave them a good buff with a fine finishing pad. I could probably go a bit further but i think they are looking decent now so best stop before going too far.

Coming along very nicely indeed. The markings look very good so far so don't tempt fate any more with the finishing pad - disaster awaits if you do!
Stephen.
-
I have said this before but once the markings go on the whole perspective of the Model starts to change. Looks awesome! I too have found Cold water and Roden decals work well together!
RAGIII

I have never tried using cold water with Roden decals , will have to try this in the future .

it definately worked on these ones but i can't gaurantee it'll work on all roden decals
just a quick update, the 'port now has it's upper wing firmly attached and i've made a start on the rigging. I just need to do the final trimming on the tails then move on to the rearward rigging.

Honestly , I have only used Roden decals two times . After that it was either form the spare box or aftermarket . With a few kits left in the stash this just may work .
Nice work on the rigging so far , this is going quick !

I haven't checked in for a while and suddenly a beautiful little biplane has appeared. The painting of the lower surfaces is wonderfully artistic, what a great job!
Richie

Nicely done rigging. You are getting close to the finish line!
RAGIII

thanks for the comments, the finish line is definately in sight now for this build. The main rigging is now complete other than trimming the tails, next job is the rest of the decals which will hopefully go on ok

I agree with Rick - this is looking super. Looking forward to seeing the finished model.

Nearly done and looking terrific. Having been playing fishing line, micro drills and superglue today I can really appreciate the wonderfully precise rigging!

thanks richie, i made a jig for drilling all the upper wing holes from an evergreen strip, this helped ensure all the holes were the same distance away from the struts

thanks to all for the comments on the Nieuport build, the finish line has now been crossed with this build. The rudder decal was way oversize and trimming it back caused a couple of small tears but i can live with that for now, i need to man up and start painting rudders rather than trusting kit decals as this seems a fairly common occurrence with some manufacturers. Had to make a new step from stretched sprue other than that no real dramas towards the end of this build and i'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

The Nieuport fighters are small enough in 1/32nd scale so I can't even imagine tackling one in 1/72nd. Your Nieuport has turned out Beautifully!
