Title: Hannover Cl.II, Jakob Gfrör, WNW-Kit in 1/32
Post by: MichaelStieber on June 28, 2021, 09:16:52 AM
Hello,

Here I am trying to write a report of the building of my Hannover Cl.II.
I have to admit that the plane is already 98% completed, but since i am rather new in this forum I am too late to do it just in time.
On the other hand I have far too much building-pictures for the 'completed' section and so I decided to show them here in form of a building report.
I hope this is okay for you.

I am sure that almost everybody here knows the plane, nevertheless here is a picture of the kit so that I can be sure that all of you know what I am talking about:

The challenge that I was looking foreward to, and the reason why I decided to build this paticular plane, was the rather difficult color scheme. I never thought that it would be that challenging...and that it will take even many more hours of researching...

The first opening of the box was a bit disappointing. After thoroughly checking the sprues I found out that the pilots seat was missing completely, the sprue was still sealed but the seat was broken out before sealing. At least the cushion was there, so that i will have to scratch only the border. Some additional work but makeable.
Even worse was the totally miscast of the engine sprue:

I knew there will be a lot of not inspected work in front of me...
I bought the kit from a regular retailer in his shop, but since WNW was already closed at the time I found the defects, he couldn't help me.
Just to try if it helps, I contacted the customer service on the WNW website and was very surprised to get an answer after some time. They apologised, and even told me that maybe, if they will find such a sprue, they will send it to me.
Since it was very uncertain if I will get a replacement, and due to the very long shipping-time from New Zealand to Germany, I decided to start with the miscast parts...
(After some long weeks of shipping I really got a replacement sprue, but at this time my engine was built a long time before)

I started by painting the wood-pattern of the fuselage with three different oil-colors (light ochre, burnt umbra, nature umbra light) on a basecoat of Vallejo Air 291. Altohough it is supposed to be a airbrush color, I did the basecoat with a brush because it's much faster than with the airbrush. I payed attention that the brush strokes had the same direction as the later wood-pattern.
Now, some months later I think I have overdone it a bit with the wood-knots, I fear they wouldn't had used wood with knots for it...but thats the way it is, you never stop learning... ;)
God thing that with the finished aircraft you dont see too much of that wood anymore.  :)

Soo, for now I think I will stop this report and hope you will like it.
Have a good time  :)

Thank you Alexis, RAGIII and Fredrik for your comments  :)

Now it's time for part two of the building report.

As usual, the next building step was the interior.
I will keep this part rather short, because it dont differs that much from all the hundreds of interiors you have already seen here... ;)

First I had to build the back and the border of the pilots seat. I did this with thin plastic-card and a plastic profile with 0.6mm diameter. It really helped that I have another one of those kits in my stash, so I could use the part of those kit as a stencil for cutting out the plastic-card.
At this stage I have also built the camera and the Telefunken-Wireless.
The seat-belts I used are the PE-parts of the kit, I think if they are bended in a nice shape and painted with some shading, it is not necessary to replace them with aftermarket products.

Next came the engine.
I knew that later most parts of it will be hidden behind the cowlings, since I decided to just leave the port-cowling open.
Thats why I had built the engine rather fast with all that miscast parts that I corrected with lots of greenstuff and brass-tubes.
Next comes a picture of my test-fit of the engine, it was completely brush-painted with Vallejo Colors (Model, Metal and Air).
On the pipe in the front I made an attempt to picture the asbestos-wrapping with a 0.7mm masking-tape and thin CA-glue, the cooling-pipes in the background will be treated the same.

After buliding the other interior parts I made one last test-fit before glueing the two fuselage-halves together.
All interior parts are also brush-painted, the MG is basecoated with Tamiya X-18 and then finished with metal-pigments.
For the brass parts I created a mix (2 parts Vallejo Metal Color 725, 1 part Vallejo Model Air 068) which I think comes out very nice.

Now we rushed a bit through the interior-building...
With the next parts, that I think are far more interesting, I will take more time...the very special painting of this plane deserves a thoroughly report  :)

As usual, I gladly answer questions nad I am happy If you comment here... 8)

Guten Tag Michael ,

Only question I have at this moment and I did put a lot of thought into this .....Can have it when you are done ! .... BITTEN  ;D

Remarkable work on the interior and engine . The insulation wrap on the rad pipe ..is made with Tamiya tape ?

I have to agree with the comments above: a marvellous restoration of the engine and the insulation around the pipe is inspirational. The detaisl in that kit are mind blowing - and you have added to them!

Thank you for the kind comments.

@Alexis
I am sorry, the answer to your question yes no  ;)
The tape I used for the insulation wrap is from AIZU (Japan), but I think a thin stripe (about 1mm) of any masking tape would be good.

@Richie
This kit is really great, the only problem with it is that it’s so challenging painting this plane properly.

@RAGIII
Yes, this miscast took me a lot of extra work that I didn’t expected, and that I didn’t appreciated.
The starboard side of the engine doesn’t look that good, but that’s the side that will be completely hidden by the cowlings so It’s okay for me.

@Stephen
Thank you for the nice words. You are right, this kid is extremely well detailed.

I think on Sunday I will have the time to post the next part of this report   :)

Part 3 - Finding The Colors

Now I tried to find the right colors for all the handpainted parts which are the complete fuselage, the middle-section of the upper wings and the lower elevators.
This step was the most important, and it took a lot of time.

At first I did a bit of research and collected some facts:
On historic pictures I can clearly see five different shades (colors) on the upper side and on the lower side, so I assume they tried to match the colors of the printed fabric.
Also I can see that the colors are not 100% the same as the fabric-colors.

So I have to find a total of ten colors that are more or less close to the printed fabric, but not exactly the fabric colors. Of course all the colors together should have a coherent appearance.
Since I like the illustrations of Ronny Bar, my first idea was to keep my color-scheme very close to his colors. When I realized that the decals of the kit are very far away from his colors I dismissed this idea, the color-style of the Wingnut-Decals (which I think are very authentic) wouldn't match with the color-style of Ronny Bar.

So I decided to use some color-style between the decals and Ronny Bar, that would be close to the fabric but not exactly the same. Just like on the historic pictures.

To do this I had to work with this colors to became a sense for them. So I finally had a plan:
1. Find mixing-recipes that meet the Wingnut-Decals as close as possible (they also would be later useful if I had to repair damage of the decals).
2. Find mixing-recipes that meet the Ronny Bar style as close as possible.
3. Find a mix between 1. and 2. as my color-scheme that I will use.

So I started to work on my plan, mixing lots of colors over many hours... ::)

...mixing more hours... ???

...until I finally had a result that I was satisfied with, and most important recipes that I could repeat.

Here my attempt to match the Wingnut-Colors:

The Ronny Bar Style was a bit more difficult, but I found also mixes that were okay for me:

And the result after my mixing-marathon:

On the right side Ronny Bar, in the middle WNW, and on the left my mix of both styles. Later I slightly changes my mixes a bit, the exact mixes I used were:

Upper Side
beige - 1x Vallejo Model Air 025 + 1x Vallejo Model Air 027
green - 3x Vallejo Model Air 014 + 2x Vallejo Model Air 143 + 1x Vallejo Model Air 001
dark blue - 2x Vallejo Model Color 048 + 1x AK Acrylic 171 (turquoise)
grey blue - 1x Vallejo Model Air 111 + 1x Vallejo Model Air 295
mauve - 7x Vallejo Model Color 044 + 1x Vallejo Model Color 048 + 2x Vallejo Model Color 038 + 2x Vallejo Model Color 146 + 3x Vallejo Model Air 001

Lower Side
ochre - Vallejo Model Air 291
pale green - 2x Vallejo Model Air 008 + 1x Vallejo Model Air 014
blue - 1x Vallejo Model Air 299 + 1x Vallejo Model Air 111 + 1x AK Acrylic 171 (turquoise)
violet - 5x Vallejo Model Air 140 + 3x Vallejo Model Air 313 + 1x Vallejo Model Color 044
pink - 1x Vallejo Model Air 085 + 3x Vallejo Model Color 044 + 2x Vallejo Model Color 136 + 16x Vallejo Model Air 001

Ready for the first attempts (now this will be hard to explain in english). I first basecoated all the parts with my beige-mix (1x Vallejo Model Air 025 + 1x Vallejo Model Air 027).
Then I made a copy of the Wingnut Decals of the Wings middle section and the elevator, and pinned holes in those copies on all the corners of the lozenges.
With masking tapes i fixed the holed copies on the wing and elevator and with a really soft pencil (8B) I made a small dot in every hole to transfer the corners of the lozenge to the kit parts.

Now it was just a matter of time  ::) to mask the lozenge one after another and airbrush one color after another...very meditative...

Huh...there are some mistakes...but they were easy to mask again and to be repaired... :)

By the way, the stripes on the bottom of the fuselage I sprayed at the same time as the wing and elevator...

That's enough for today, next time we will comtinue with the fuselage and the overspray of the fuselage...

As usual I apprecciate every comment and will answer every question  :)

Have a nice time.

Michael,
This is just incredibly thorough work, your efforts are paying great returns here, this model is already extraordinary! The color matches look great on my monitor and you have certainly spared no effort to achieve matches to the decals and profiles. I'll enjoy following your progress further, great Build Log thus far!
Cheers,
Lance

And now some very thoughtful research on color shades, not to mention your manual masking of the pattern :o
I will follow this build (but I think I move my Eduard Hannover a bit deeper in my stash).

Hi  :)

@Lance and RAGIII
Thank you for the very kind comments.  :)

@janh
This is very interesting, so the missing pilot seat seams to be an issue that happens more than once...
Very interesting is also the information that the customer service is still working.
...maybe everyone should check their kits of the Hannover now, before it is too late for replacement...

@Frank
I am very glad that you like my plane so far  :)
The masking of the pattern...well, what you see was only the rehearsal for the fuselage. Thank god, I didn’t knew this when I began... :o
About your Hannover kit, I totally understand that you avoid painting this patterns in the even smaller and more complicated 1/48 scale. On the other hand you could building it as the first prototype which has camouflage patterns, I think about this to do it with my second kit of this plane.

@Fvdm
Thank you for the kind comment.

I expect to post the next part of the report this weekend.

I just checked my kit, the first version issue, 32024, and the pilots seat parts and engine block parts are ok. Great build so far Michael, and thank you for going into such detail about how you worked out the colours and painting technique. I disagree with you on the WNW decal colours, I believe Aviattic decals are far more accurate, BUT, the colour research and process that you display are first class. We can all learn from this method. Regards, Pete in RI.

Hi  :)

@Pete
Thank you for the kind reply. About the decal colors, well I did some research but i am far away from beeing an expert in this subject. In my opinion the Aviattic colors are a bit bright. Since those decals are semi transparent I used them always on a light-grey basecoat to make them a bit darker. But in the end thats also a bit of personal taste I think.

@Gary and Fredrik
I apprecciated your very kind comments, thank you.

Now to Part 4, Painting the fuselage

Basically I used the same method to paint the lozenge of the fuselage as described before with the middlesection of the wings. That means I first made copies from two Ronny Bar profiles in the right scale and re-arranged the colors a bit, using five color pens. The sides are from different planes, but since every plane was unique handpainted it doesn't matter that much. I have no perfect original pictures of both sides of the plane that I chose to build, so no matter what I do, the pattern will be different than the original anyway...

Now I discovered that the fuselage will be a bit more complicated than wings, because the pattern has to go together all around port side-upper side-starboard side while the wings just had an upper side and a lower side. After sleeping a night over this problem I made another copy of the two fuselage sides in the right distance to another and planned the pattern between them. Again I used pens in five colors to make sure that no same colors are side by side at any point.
Then I did it exactly as with the wings, pinning holes in the lozenge-corners of the masks and transfer them with a ultra-soft pencil to the fuselage...

Masking the fuselage was again very meditative, it took the complete audio-book Lord-of-the-rings and Jules Vernes 20000-miles-under-the-ocean to paint all five colors on the fuselage.
I was very happy with the result, extremely exact shapes and no edges between the colors...so I think it was worth the effort.
Here are some pictures of those journey:

Puh...the basic colors are done  ::)
But at this stage the painting of the fuselage is just half-done. Nearly every Hannover Cl.II has the handpainted lozege oversprayed (is it any wonder why the germans needed so much time to build a plane... ??? )
Again I had some research to find out more of the oversprayed colors, but information was very rare. The facts I used for my color-finding were:
-On good original pictures I can see at least two different overspray colors.
-historic reports (capture reports) and statements from temporary witnesses describe the fuselage often as undefined greenish/bluish.
-the WNW manual also suggests green or blue colors for the overspray.

So my decision was to use a dark green and a medium grey-blue for the overspray.
Before spraying on the fuselage I wanted to get a feeling for the colors and the thinning again, so I sprayed the five fuselage-colors on a piece of plastic card just to get the feeling...

The thinning of the paints in this attempt was good for spraying shades, but too thin for an overspray, so I made more attempts...

This helped me to find my colors and thinning-rate for spraying the overspray, they are:
-dark green: 3x Vallejo Model Air 250, 2x Vallejo Flow Improver, 2x Tamiya X20-A, 4x Vallejo Airbrush Thinner
-greyish blue: 1x Vallejo Model Air 109, 1x Vallejo Flow Improver, 1x Tamiya X20-A, 2x Vallejo Airbrush Thinner
The three thinner-components of those mixes are mixed before adding the paint-component, to avoid clumping of the colors because of the unmixed alcohol component X20-A.

With those color-mixes I started overspraying the fuselage until I thought that it comes close to the appearing on the original pictures.

Unfortunately I forgot to make a picture of the finished overspraying, so I will show here the picture of the completed fuselage with the applied decals.
The yellow stripe on the fuselage is made with masking and the airbrush, the other markings are the excellent decals of the kit.

You've used the word meditative more than once. That's a great mind set that can get us through a lot of modeling challenges. Something I have to work on - don't be paralyzed by what appears to be unsurmountable problems - relax, one step at a time. Very nice work on this one.

Hi  :)

Now it's high time for the next part of my report...

In my last report I showed the painting of the fuselage, so now I will go to the smaller parts.
As a base for the lozenge-decals I chose (Gunze) Hobby Color H58 Interior Green on every part that would be covered with decals.
Next I applied all those decals without any setter or softener, just using a hairdryer. Those decals are so good, it doesn't need more.

After I applied all those decals I used Vallejo Satin Varnish to seal them -- THAT WAS A MISTAKE  ::)
Although it looked perfect, the water-based Varnish didn't had enough grip on the shiny decals. It easily could be scratched away... :(
So I did the exra-round and sprayed a thick layer of and old citadel matt Varnish directly from the can over everything. Then, again, I sprayed Vallejo Satin Varnish over it, and this time it holds perfectly.

Next I painted the leather around the pilots opening with different Vallejo Model (and Model-Air) colors, as usual with the brush.
Since I am a figure-painter since over 20 years, those brush-painting parts are the most fun for me  :)

Soo, now most parts are prepaired and in the next report we can start to assemble them to a plane...

As usual I am looking foreword to all questions, comments or any kind of reply  :)

Have a nice time...

Hello,

First of all I have to apologize for the long delay of this report.
I have had weeks with really a lot of work so I didn'd found the mood to write any reports, sorry...
...but now I have more time and so this report will be continued now  :)

Of course I also want to thank you all for your very kind comments, they meant a lot to me.  :-*

In the last parts of this building-report I prepared most of the bigger parts of the plane. So I could start to assemble them.

I started with the undercarriage, the design of this kit is so good that it was really easy going...everything fitted perfectly.
Next I went to the tail section, here I assembled both tailplanes and the elevators and also the rudder and the small struts between the tailplanes. Again everything fits perfectly so that the whole step was done in less than an hour...oh how I love WNW  :-*
I had a flow...so I hurried to the cabane struts, and glued the middle section of the top-wing on them.
Now I was satisfied for that day and gave the glue the time to harden through overnight.
Here are some pictures that I made at the end of that step:

As you can see on the pictures I also assembled the turnbuckles on all those parts before glueing them together, I forgot to mention that before.

Then again, it was time for some small parts so I started to work on the observers armament.
The ring is good designed so I just added two steel-springs and one handle, both made of thin wire. I dont even had to drill the holes for the handle for they are already in the molding, so all I had to do was bending a piece of wire and glue it in  8)
The painting was fun and so I took some time for it and added some wear to the edges of the ring. All of this wear is just brush-painted with Vallejo-Metal Color.
I prefer painting the wear instead of using any chipping-fluid (hairspray, masking-fluid, chipping-products...), I have much better control with the brush than I would have with rubbing away the paint over a chipping-fluid. Besides that it is a lot more faster  :)

The Parabellum LMG14 I basecoated with Tamiya X18 (a little bit thinned down). Then I used metal-pigment (Uschi van der Rosten Iron-Pigment) to give it some metal-appearance. For the small parts I used Vallejo Colors.

Thats all for now, thank you for reading this  :)
...next part will be the Propeller...

Have a nice time,
Michael

Thank you all for the very nice comments  :)

Today I have a rather small update, it's just the propeller...

On the original pictures the specific plane that I am building shows a Niendorf-Propeller with its beautiful course-lines of the dark and light wood layers.
So I choose this brand of propellers, that thankfully was one of the nine different propellers that were included in the kit.

I always paint propellers by hand, for me this is the only way to achieve acceptable results.
The basecoat was Vallejo-Air 028 (this one of course sprayed with the airbrush), the dark wood was painted with Vallejo-Air 035 with the brush.
Simultanously I always had to correct the shapes of the two colors with the brush until I was satisfied with them.
...alone this steps took about two hours of work in a quiet relaxed mood, while hearing a good audio-book...

When I was happy with the shape of the basic colors I started to paint some wood-grain with thinned-down Vallejo Model Color (#142 for the light wood, #150 for the dark wood).
This has been done rather fast, I just wanted some kind of additional structure.
Here is the result so far:

Now I wanted to simulate the effect of a glaze to get the right shine and a bit warmer color.
I mixed two Inks with Tamiya X-20A until I was happy with the color. The Inks can be thinned down very well and they bring the right amount of shine, so I dont have to use another kind of clearcoat afterwards.
I applied my mix with a big brush with one brush-stroke on each side of the propeller, it was very important to get a very even layer of glaze without any accumulation of color on any place.

Now I just had to paint the middle-part of the propeller with metal-color and a dark wash and the painting was complete.
The decals I will apply in a later step...

Soo, the completion of the plane comes nearer, next time I will build a base and some small parts and then we will do the final steps...

Have a nice time and as usual I will apprecciate any comments.
Michael

The gun ring looks damn real, and the painting of the prop is done so well. I try to avoid having to paint propellers like this. I would never be able to do it like that!

Hello,

I totally forgot to finish this building report, sorry  :-[

Now I will show you the final steps, at first I have built the base for the plane.
I used a shelf that i cutted to the right size and glued a small rim around it on the top side.
This rim ensures that the borders of the grass-mat, that i planned to glue on the shelf, will look decent.

Then I painted all the wood with a brown glaze.
The grass-mat I used is from Martin Welberg, I bought two of his 'rough meadow weeds' and glued them on my shelf without any further modification.
In my opinion those mats are beautiful as they are and so I did no further coloring, i just used a few tufts of grass to smoothen the transition between the two mats.
Nonetheless I varnished the mat with a matte-varnish to remove the shiny appearance of the plastic fibres of the grass.

The last parts I had to bulid were the trestle and the chocks for the plane.
The trestle is included in the WNW kit, and the chocks I made from a small piece of wood, some wire and some EZ-line.

Now I just had to put the plane on the base, and this project was finished.
Thank you for watching my building report, and a special thank you for all the kind comments  :)
