With the Fokker almost done I feel like doing another quick build and it's been waaaay to long since I built a Pfalz D.III . :)
Alexis
-
Wow! I thought the Fokker was a quick build. I'm still trying to get details finished on my BE12!
This will be interesting. I don't think I've ever seen a build of this kit.
Cheers,
Hugh
-
Nice choice! I have the D.IIIa on the bench and it's going together rather well.
A bit annoying that Eduard missed the pipes going to and from the radiator in the top wing though.
But nothing good references and a bit of scratch building can't sort.
Mark
-
they skipped those on the albatros d iii also (but not on the dv). it seems like a strange omission as that seems such a large part of the plane's profile.
-
If I was dizzy before Alexis, I’m on the floor now ???
One of my favourite aircraft though ;D
Guy
-
Nice choice, Alexis! Some speedy building going on... but great subjects! ATB, Marc.
-
Looking forward to another by The Queen of the Pfalz!
RAGIII
-
Another oldie but goodie. Looking forward to this one Alexis.
-
Thanks guys , glad to have you all tagging along on this one .
Hugh , you are correct on that not many builds of this kit have been seen . So I hope I don't mess it up !
Mark A , I have built the D.IIIa 7 times now with 4 more still in the stash in 48 scale , enjoy the build . It's a nice kit :)
Guy , like I said be easier if you just sit ! ;)
Alexis
-
Spent part of the morning removing parts from their trees for clean up when I notice on the tail section , Eduard has molded the tail wing root upside down !
Not something I really want to fix with this older plastic . It's hard to sand and is or can be brittle :( ::) . I have read reviews of this kit and no one has mentioned this ????
Alexis
-
Sorry to hear that Eduard made a mistake. Just sand it real carefully and it should be alright. If you think it's to brittle you can glue some styrene behind it to strengthen it.
-
That’s easy Alexis,
Just glue the tail plane upside down too - voilá - perfect fit! ;D
Guy
Ps if you need any more top tips, don’t hesitate to ask ;)
-
Are you saying that the root curves towards the bottom of the aircraft? If not then it is correct to have an upsweep on the leading edge for the DIII isn't it?
RAGIII
-
Since it looks like a butt joint ::) anyway couldn't you fabricate the part in 40 thou, sand off the offending bit and glue it on - easy being an arm chair builder......
Steve
-
Searching in the dim, dark recesses of my mind Alexis, I think Eduard are correct. The tailplane was like that - there was a story that the Pfalz was a real favourite of balloon - busters, and the usual tactic was a screaming dive from altitude to avoid the flak, and the Pflaz was a good "diver", and then the inverted tailplane aerofoil helped pull it out of the dive at low level... Now I can simply not remember where I read all this, let me peruse the books! Regards, Marc.
-
Sorry to butt in again, both the plans in the Windsock D.III and D.IIIa confirm the inverted aerofoil... I looked at an old (since fallen apart) Roden D.III in 1/32 and it has the inverted aerofoil, more subtle perhaps.... In photographs it's difficult to see, the underside of the tailplane is invariably in shadow!

Regards,
Marc.
-
Thanks Marc , you are correct , I had the scale drawings upside down with scale drawings of the Fokker Dr.1 as well . I should have smoke that joint !!!! ::)
So Eduard did get it right !
Alexis
-
Whoa Alexis. I am like Gary - I miss a couple of days and you almost finish one model and are well into another.... I have struggled to make a set of wings and radiators in that time!!
I do like the lines of the Pfalz machines - so clean and streamlined.
Stephen.
-
Thanks Stephen :)
Construction is underway with the pit put together waiting paint . Engine is also assembled but I didn't take photo of this and I don't know why !!!! The control column is replace with evergreen rod and the hand grips are from another kit . The kit ones in this kit shattered when trying to remove the part form the tree . ::) Gun breches are form a junk Dragon Dr.1 . I lost one of the PE parts in the kit and the kit gun breches have no detail to them . So at this stage it's no longer out of box ;)
Alexis
-
:)
-
Very nice plane, if I can give a brief explanation about the stabilizer I add a crude drawing (my apologies for the poor quality of finger drawing on the tablet ::) ): wing profile deviates airflow downwads to generate lift, this induces a pitch down momentum and this is the main reason for a stabilizer. A reverse airfoil profile is one possible (and elegant) solution and is one mark of a sophisticated project. Other makers prefer to use symmetrical profiles to simplify building but at the cost of a greater negative incidence, inducing additional drag. Pretty unusual in WWI machines, hats off to Pfalz engineers!
-
Good start Alexis. I had forgotten how basic this early Eduard kit was :o
RAGIII
-
Thanks Giuseppe ,
Being blonde , I actually understood what you are saying ! And your finger painting is far better then my ;)
Rick , yeah their older kits are basic for the plastic , but tons of PE !
Might be able to start spraying some colours today depending on the weather ....still have tons of yard work and more trees which need pruning ::)
Alexis
-
Alexis, have not seen your new build!
Is this old kit worth it? I know the new tooling Pfalz D.IIIa and together with a PE set that is a damn good kit, nearly perfect. Since the new tooling is available very cheap for example as Weekend edition I will avoid this very first one ;)
Anyway, I will watch so see what you are getting out of it,
Cheers,
Frank
-
Hi Frank ,
I still have two of the D.III ( limited edition dual combo ) ( newer ones ) and then there still 4 more of the D.IIIa in 48 scale ;)
Alexis
-
Past few days have been rather busy for me and wasn't able to get time in front of the bench . Today I was able too and started with painting the base colours . Little more in the pit with detailing painting , but the engine is painted up and ready for weathering . Since very little of it will be seen I didn't go fancy with it . Tail skid and prop felt like being painted as well and once this dries the wood effect and laminations can be done . Also drilled out the exhaust and no fingers were injured in the process :)
Alexis
-
:)
-
:)
-
:)
-
Looking great Alexis. The engine is perfect for what will be seen. Nice work on the exhaust also!
RAGIII
-
Nice progress, Alexis. Love that little engine!
Cheers,
Gary
-
Looks good Alexis - and good news that your fingers are still intact!
Stephen.
-
Good progress! It looks like you will be able to close the fuselage soon.
Cheers,
Frank
-
Another oldie underway looking good !
Ed
-
Those 2nd generation Eduard kits were lovely, beautifully moulded compared to the original ones. This is one of my favourites, have you decided on a livery yet Alexis?
Cheers,
Dave.
-
Looking great Alexis!
I’m also keen to see what scheme you go for...
Guy
-
Thank-you very much guys :)
I'm not sure what scheme she will wear , will have to check ref's and see what I have in the decal stash to dress her up :-\
Alexis
-
Cockpit is finished with a wash and a bit of pastel work . Halves are joined now with the tails parts fixed in place along with the lower wing . There is some filling once this has fully dried .
Alexis
-
;)
-
:)
-
Excellent interior work and Terrific progress Alexis!
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick , We had more snow over night so it won't be an out door day ...bench time sounds better good to me on starting the filling the seams and more PE work on the Fw 190 ;)
Alexis
-
Hi Alexis,
You are doing a great job and in top gear!
Willem
-
Thanks Willem , should be done with the filling and sanding today . First coat of filler is ready for sanding ;)
Alexis
-
Is this another of your speed builds Alexis? You and Rick seem to be able to put kits together which look top notch in the time it takes me to make a nacelle for one of my models!
Stephen.
-
Great work, Alexis!
Cheers,
Gary
-
Thanks Stephen and Gary :)
Stephen , not sure about it being a speed build , but it is out of the box . ;)
Filling , sanding , more filling followed by ...you guessed it ! More sanding :o Seams have a coat of primer on and everything is looking good so far ! Rest of the parts are cleaned up as well and ready to go for paint . But before I do that I need to remember to drill the rigging holes and mounting holes for the struts ::)
Alexis
-
:)
-
Great job on filling what I remember to be pretty large gaps...especially the wing roots! Looking forward to the painting stage!
RAGIII
-
Ah, the stage at which I typically break half a dozen drill bits!
-
Thanks Rick and Dave ,
Rick , the gaps weren't bad on this one , worst being up around the engine bay but this was my own doing ....engine is sitting slanted ::)
Well Dave I'm sure I will at least break one :o maybe even two ;)
Alexis
-
Nice job, seam queen.
-
Thanks Ken :)
Alexis
-
Great interior work. I almost forgot how much puttying and sanding is nedeed by these kits and really admire your patience.
Ciao
Giuseppe
-
Thanks Giuseppe :) Only work done yesterday was drill the strut locations ::)
Alexis
-
Hi Alexis, this is looking good. The Pfalz DIII is such an elegant looking aircraft, this is going to be a treat to watch come together.
-
Nice sanding ;)
Guy
-
Thanks Richie and Guy :)
Yes she is a very elegant aircraft indeed . Such sexy lines to the overall shape .
Rigging holes are drill and the landing gear is assembled , set aside to dry overnight . Tomorrow I will add bungee cords . This is a very weak part in the kit and the added strength will benefit . Then it's off to primer and paint ! But I still need to pick a scheme still :o :o ::)
Alexis
-
Great progress Alexis. I really should make more time to read the forums because I can't keep up with your build speed. :)
-
Great work so far Alexis, did you take any decision about which dress she'll wear?
:-)
-
Thanks guys ,
Still not sure what dress she will wear , haven't had the time to look at profiles . Been rather busy the past few days and haven't gotten any bench time either and the next few days are going to be the same ....excellent weather and still a ton of yard work which needs to be done :o
Alexis
-
Haven't forgotten about this one and it's still on the bench . Just haven't had time of late :-[
Alexis
-
Alexis -
Gardening is not one of my favourite tasks so don't envy you that job!
The plus side of the delay is it gives you time to think and decide on the colour/marking option.
Regards
Dave
-
Thankfully, I only have a very small garden, it still takes up far too much of my time. Looking forward to the next update when you find the time.
-
I had lost track of this one Alexis. Good to see that you are still working on it, but good too that you are having fine wether and are able to work outside in the fresh air. The model will be waiting for you when it starts to rain....
Stephen.
-
Thanks for the vote guys ;)
I have a HUGE back yard and I get about 60 XL bags for leaves and a crap load of tress ! I have already cut down 7 and I still have more to go ! I do this every 3 - 4 years ...it's my wood for the fire pit ;)
But I can say ....She's got legs!!!! well on her legs at least . Just have to add the bungee cords and it's off to primer and hopefully paint tomorrow . We are getting snow overnight ...yeah ! ...not ;) So the next few days I will be able to get more bench time in .
Still don't know what markings to go with ::)
Alexis
-
Nice legs Alexis ;D
RAGIII
-
Yes they are Rick , thanks for noticing ! ;)
Alexis
-
Is the forestry done for now Alexis? Good to see you back at the bench and getting her up on her legs.
Richie
-
Legs looking good Alexis.
Snow? At this time of year? Do you live near the Arctic Circle? We have been getting a lot of cold winds here in SE UK but no snow! Well actually a few flakes which did not settle about two weeks ago.
Stephen.
-
Sorry, have long time not looked into this thread. You made a good progress since last time.
And the Pfalz looks very common to the newer kit (which I build twice).
Cheers,
Frank
-
Thanks guys for the kind comments , you are all awesome :)
Stephen , Yes you could say I live near to the Arctic Circle , Alberta Canada . We aren't free and clear until May long weekend ( Queen Victoria's Birthday ) It's the start of our spring time now and we can still get snow over the next month . Over the weekend weather is calling for some ...not good ...takes longer to get the yard cleaned up :(
Frank , you still have some catching up ...so far for me for the D.IIIa I have built it seven times now and this is my second go at doing the D.III . Start Roden's kit in 32 scale and that ended up as a self queen .
Primer is on and the silver gary and some of the detail painted began . And I will be doing one of the schemes for the kit .
Alfred Lenz , Jasta 22 1386/17 . Should look nice next my Pfalz Dr.1 !
Alexis
-
:)
-
Smooth work Alexis. That scheme should look fantastic!
RAGIII
-
A full silbergrau scheme, Alexis, I look forward to seeing it on!
-
I like that scheme. And a plain silver color will highlight the exterior details.
-
Silbergrau is a difficult colour to paint because it shows all of the joints if they are not perfect. On the other hand it does provide a pure background for any personal colours so this one should look very good.
Stephen.
-
Thanks guys !
I'm almost done with the detail painting and we are off to clear coating ! Once this stage is met I will post progress photo's :o
Alexis
-
That's a nice scheme you've chosen. Silver isn't the easiest color but I'm sure you can handle it.
-
Very nice work so far Alexis. Pfalz D.III is my favorite WW1 fighter, good to see them been build. I have that same 1996 kit, still untouched, i have also the newer Weekend version which i think will be the one i build first.
-
Thanks guys !
I'm almost done with the detail painting and we are off to clear coating ! Once this stage is met I will post progress photo's :o
Alexis
I'm looking forward to seeing those photos Alexis! :)
-
Thanks guys :)
It has been a few days since I was able to work on this one . But Yard work is finally done .
Everything has been clear coated and with start on the decalling . Bit more to go with the strut decals and other smaller ones .
For the age of the decals so far they have performed excellent . I was expecting cracking , but so far so good .
Matti , The Pfalz D.III/a is my favorite as well . Such a sexy design :)
Alexis
-
:)
-
:)
-
Simple and effective Alexis.
You're right about the sexy design of the Pfalz DIII / DIIIa, the DIIIa looks more aggressive with the MGs fully visible, the DIII shows IMHO a more "modern" line.
Anyway my favourite is the DIIIa as well!
Antonio
-
Lovely update, the finish look super smooth, I love the colour too. I still have a WNW Pfalz in my stash, this build is tempting me back to kit building. Agreed about the Pfalz being sexy, incredibly sleek lines for a WW1 fighter.
-
The paint and markings are bringing this one to life Alexis. Not long to finish this and another superb Pfalz will be in your collection. Such a graceful looking aeroplane.
Stephen.
-
Great markings. Simple, but beautiful. I like it
-
Your Pfalz is really coming along very nicely, Alexis -
The model really seems to come alive once you get the decals on - looking great so far!
Regards
Dave
-
The markings make this one look even better Alexis! Well done!
RAGIII
-
Thanks for all the wonderful comments guys :)
I haven't done anything since my last up-date , still feeling it form the yard work ( pulled a few muscles I didn't even knew I had ) But I will be back in front of the bench soon with another up-date ;)
Alexis
-
This one is looking quite gorgeous, Alexis! It is certainly a colour scheme worth doing.... Regards, Marc.
-
Thanks Marc ,
We have some rain coming so I will be able to get more time in front of the bench .....I seem to be taking my time here of late but with the nice weather here and yard work done I find myself back on the mountain bike ;)
Alexis , out there riding a Cannondale !
-
Today was spent getting the rest of the stenciling in place and I was successful at doing just that . Even clear coat and ready for the first round of weathering got accomplished . Now I have to twist up some eyelets for the rigging .
Alexis
-
:)
-
:)
-
Very nice, need to do a D.III to.
Have you opened the gun outlets, on both sides beside the engine?
Cheers,
Frank
-
Thanks Frank ,
Nein , not on this one . I left it as is and will just glue the gun muzzle and the face of the gun jacket . I didn't want to mess around with adding gun jackets and the hassle of changing things around in the pit .
Alexis
-
Nice progess, Alexis
Shaping up well, now. I like the decalling stage but stencil decals can tiny and pretty frustrating to get on right; but you have got these on the struts nicely.
Regards
Dave
-
The stencils look terrific Alexis. This should go quickly now 8)
RAGIII
-
It should , but it won't go quick as not as quick as I was hoping for . Lots of appointments and meetings this week already and next week card is filling up quick . Weekend is coming with rain ...so never know .... ;)
Alexis , who is sore form riding said Cannondale ::)
-
Nice progress, Alexis.
Glad to hear you can get some riding in. Its always hard to get started again.
-
Lovely work all around this kit, Alexis. It will be another jewel to your collection.
-
They look like nice sharp stencils . Nice.
-
Super work on the stencils Alexis. This is going to be another stunner when it is finished.
Stephen.
-
Very nice work on those decals Alexis :)
-
The first few decals always seem to give a model a bit more of a wow factor. You must be very pleased with how this is progressing, it's going to be a real gem.
Richie
-
Thanks guys for the positive encouragement :)
Today is a rain day so a few hours where spent in front the green mat ! A wash has been added using Flory's Dark Dirt clay wash . Rad is a mix of black paint and future as the wash . This was sealed and when dry I started with Tamiya pastels . Still a few more spots of weathering here and there and I still have to weather the exhaust but this is the stage she is sitting at now .
Alexis

Great looking silvergrey on an elegant Pfalz!
Andreas

Love it Alexis, I know it's only a tiny part of a lovely build but that tail skid is a thing of rare beauty!
Richie
-
Looking gorgeous Alexis. The subtle weathering on the lower wing is awesome. Looking forward to the next update.
RAGIII
-
Very nice and clean build with not too much weathering. Great work as usual, Alexis.
Bye Manni
-
Nice! I love the subtle wheatering.
-
Thank-you so very much guys !
Today's goal will be making the wire hoops needed for the rigging and finish off the rest of the few bits of weathering left .
Ferry , what is " wheatering " ? I looked this up on google and it laughed at me :o
Alexis
-
Good work on your Pfalz, very realistic wood effects on propeller and tail skid.
-
Oops :-\
I used one h to many.
-
The finish and markings on this one are excellent Alexis. It looks as though you will soon be adding another winner to your collection.
Stephen.
-
Thanks Matti and Stephen :)
I finished off the weathering and got my wire hoops made ...so now I can start with assembly . Pic's coming to a modelling site near you !
Stephen , who is this Terry ? ....Oh yeah ...my evil modelling twin ! ;)
Alexis
-
Alexis - your model is looking great. Ever since I watched the Blue Max as a young lad I've always admired the lines of a Pfalz D.III. Looking forward to your progress on this one.
Cheers,
Gary
-
Excellent progress
Steve
-
Thanks Gary and Steve :)
Alexis
-
It looks already very elegant as single wing - you don't need to mount the upper wing ;) 8)
Cheers,
Frank
-
Thanks Frank ,
So you are telling me that all I need to do is glue the wheels in place fix the prop on the front and can call this one done !!! Then what do I do with the struts and upper wing ??? ;) ;) ;) :o
Alexis
-
Yeah, it is called 109 in beautiful (https://www.modellboard.net/Smileys/Modellboard/7.gif)
If you already painted the upper wing you can mount it. We are tired of all the modeled 109.
Cheers,
Frank

No, we aren’t >:( :). But a Pfalz looks better anyway (we‘re tired of all those Tiger tank models, that’s something I hope we all could agree…)

No, we aren’t >:( :). But a Pfalz looks better anyway (we‘re tired of all those Tiger tank models, that’s something I hope we all could agree…)
I'm still fond of a 109, especially from Summer 1940. I still want to see the top wing on this Pfalz though. :)
Never want to see another Tiger tank though!
Richie
-
Thanks guys the top wing will get mounted in place . I start with getting the eyelets glued in place and prep two rigging lines for the wing root area . This is a tight place and is easier to do this now . I still have the eyelets to fix in place on the top wing so maybe tomorrow .....weather is nice so it might be a day for a ride instead .
I still have a few 109's in the stash . 2 in 32 scale . 4 in 48 scale , but it still ain't no FW 190 ! I have only built one Tiger Tank and that was about 40 years ago .
Alexis
-
Okay , past few days I have been extremely lazy .....you know feet up on the coffee table ..remote in hand ..Sieben curled up beside purring happy away . Just sheer bliss !
Rest of the eyelets are mounted and the wing ! Frank made a good point since it was already painted and all Fuel lines for the gravity fuel tank are also in place . Was so excited that I remembered to actually do this ...I missed out on drilling the hole of the rear rad pipe in the fuselage . :-[ Not the first time I have done such things and I do guarantee this will reoccur in the future . There is no way anyone can predict brain farts , still better then wet ones ;)
Top wing was easy mount and to my surprise it remains true ! For the cab struts I used Testors Model Master glue ( needle bottle ) for the join on the fuselage and let that tack up for a few minutes . This will leave a flexible join for the next phaze .
The inter struts I mounted to the lower first using a med set super glue , flip this over lining it the holes to line everything up . Once the glue for the inter struts was set I removed the winge/fuselag and filled those holes with super glue and placing this in the holes of the top wing . Then the cab struts I slide in place . She is now drying for a bit before I start the rest of the rigging .

Looking good again Alexis 8)

Very nice, Alexis.

Well that's looking very fine Alexis. Much better as a biplane!
Richie
-
That's the ticket, Alexis!
Looking wonderful so far. I've ordered the recent Eduard 'weekend edition' of this one - I hope it comes out as well as yours ...........
Regards
Dave
-
Glad that you all agree that it looks better as a bi-plane :) Thanks guys ! 8)
Alexis
-
Biplanes are always better than those things with only one wing...! This is looking better with every update Alexis, just looking forward now to seeing it finished.
Stephen.
-
You won't have to wait long Stephen . rigging is almost done . Only two more lines on the right side and flight controls for the tail . Just a matter of placing the rest of the parts in place .
Alexis
-
Looking great Alexis! Such a beautiful Aircraft!
RAGIII

That's looking really nice!

That looks excellent - it's really taking shape now.

Excellent, looking great now with both wings and rigged.

Thanks Guys , bit more work was done but nothing worth of pic's yet .
Alexis

And this one comes to an end ! Thank you all for following the build and leaving your comments . :)
More in the complete section ;)
Alexis

Stunning work Alexis! It has been a joy to follow your build!
RAGIII

Thanks Rick :)
Alexis

That turned out to be a very good looking kit Alexis. Like that grass base too :)

Thanks Matti :)
Alexis

Wow, what a great result. I think you did a great job on this one. I really need to read more often on the forum because I missed the last steps.

Thanks Ferry :)
