Does anybody know how to identify the type / configuration of RFC Lewis Guns from the serial numbers ?
Gun numbers were 4101 and 14029 and both were lost to enemy action late in 1916.

This is £6 well spent:

It won't identify the serial numbers, it will give you a good chance of working out what they were
If you get more into this stuff, I'd recommend this book:

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I'm not working from a photograph or illustration - I only have the gun numbers as recorded in contemporaneous RFC records.

It sounds like you have more information that could help work out what you are looking for. How were these guns lost, what aeroplane?

Thanks for the reply. FE2b 6992, No 11 Squadron, 13 Wing. Shot down 10th Oct 1916 NE of Bapaume, Somme.
"Confusion" has crept into some records and actuality points towards this 'plane having been a victim of Oswald Boelcke of Jasta 2.
