Title: MvR bust
Post by: gedmundson on September 26, 2020, 07:30:32 AM
Thanks to the generosity of one of our Forum members - I just received this wonderful bust of MvR in the mail. Having bought the Meng Fokker Dr.1 kit without the bust, I happily accepted the offer when my good friend Mark contacted me about sending it. Looking forward to completing this little painting project!!
Cheers,
Gary

I started painting the bust, so here is a progress photo. I primed it with a light grey Vallejo primer, then worked with some Vallejo flesh tones. The cap was airbrushed with a mix of Vallejo field grey and field blue to get it started, then brush painted with their acrylic colours. Still a WIP...

Gary

Gary,
That's a nice, clean start. Someday I must give figure painting a go.

wow! Beautifully done to date! It is amazing what a great paint job will do for a figure. when I first saw this bust I didn't see the likeness to the Baron. Your painting shows Me to have been wrong!

Stunning.

I’d love to be able to paint figures, but I just wouldn’t know where to start.

Rick, Kevin and gcn - thanks for taking the time to comment - much appreciated. I agree with your comment about the likeness to MvR, Rick. Until there is some colour to the face and the eyes have been painted the resemblance is tough to see. I think the Baron had a bit wider of a mouth than the figure shows...hard to say. The lower part with the jacket is coming along and I can soon post a picture of the completed bust.
Cheers,
Gary

Beautiful work, Gary.

How do you maintain the crisp piping?

Well thank you Bob! I did the piping carefully with a Series 7 Winsor & Newton 000 brush. And I used a microscope. Quite an investment - but it has helped me with all aspects of modelling & detail painting. And I need all the help I can get.
Cheers,
Gary

After a few days of painting touch-ups I'd like to call this done. I'm by no means a figure painter, but have enjoyed experimenting with some different acrylic colours, shadows, highlights, using a home-made wet palette. I still need to learn more to even get close to the amazing work I see posted on t'Internet now and then. Again - a grateful thanks to my friend "Mgunns" who sent me the bust. Now I'll have to build that triplane to display along side of it  :).
Cheers,
Gary

Gary,
I think you actually are a "Figure Painter", let there be no doubt. That's fantastic.

Rick, Kevin and Bob - thanks so much for your kind words! I hope to tackle those two Infantry busts from The Somme 1916 now I have a bit more experience with these acrylic paints.

Excellent work. Oils may be getting pushed aside as the blending etc on your figure is superb!!

Gary,

That really is stunning!

How did you go about blending the acrylics so nicely? I think that’s the secret to figure painting - I just haven’t worked out how to do it yet!

Thanks for asking, Guy - I've been on a steep learning curve myself when it comes to working with the acrylics. The short answer is blending with these Vallejo acrylic paints involves using many layers of very diluted paint. I'm working on the long answer right now as Brett Green would like a write-up on the bust from the standpoint of a novice painter for one of his magazines. The base primer colour, brush-loading, and as mentioned the paint dilution are all factors. Also patience and practice - I've tried painting several faces using resin castings made from my current busts just to get the feel of what works...colours, shadows, highlights. Slowly making progress.
Cheers,
Gary

Thanks Gary,

Yes, I have heard that, I just don’t really know how it works in practice. I’d love to see you do an article on it.

Always a treat to see your work Gary. That's a wonderful result for a chap who's "not a figure painter",my congratulations.I've always used oils for figures precisely because acrylics seemed much trickier, you look like you have it down pat though.
Cheers,
Dave.

No, you are most definitely a figure painter!
He is disturbingly realistic - with the Aryan light shining in his eyes, I almost expect him to start singing 'Tomorrow belongs to me'!
