I've decided to take a little detour to get some more experience with some techniques.
The subject chosen is Roden's 1/32 Albatros D.III.

Sub-assemblies for the interior - Cockpit, Mercedes D.III engine (WNW), fuel tank etc...
Kent

looking great already! What are you using for the rib tapes?
-
Excellent start, Kent. Looking forward to following along.
Cheers,
Bud

It looks like your experimenting is paying off. You are off to a great start. This is on my to do list and I will be following along with interest as you progress through the build. Based on what I see here this is going to be a real Barn Burner of a model.
-
Got the same kit and markings (Aviattics version ) waiting in the stash, been collecting all the aftermarket I can find for it. Will be following with interest Kent, regards, Pete in RI
-
Beautiful work, Kent... I love your colour choices and shading effects... Marc.
-
Excellent start Kent. The wood parts look great. I Love the wing colors and your rib tape additions. I am looking forward to your progress!
RAGIII

Most excellent start indeed Kent :)
Terri

Thanks Guy's - I'm glad to have your support for this one.
It doesn't feel like Roden kit is lagging very far behind the WNW's, so I hope to get a decent result in the end.
Petrov: The rib tapes are made from self adhesive aluminum insulation tape. Approx 0,8 mm strips are cut avoiding to cut the backing paper.
When mounted the 'ends' are fixed with a little CA to prevent the tape from loosening again.
I've have been using ordinary Tamiya masking tape before for rib tape, but this is a bit easier to work with and the result is a little more subtle.
I think it would even be possible to add some stiching with a 'rosie the rivetter' tool. But I'm not going to experiment with that now!
Cheers: Kent

Looks great, Kent. Voss's aircraft is a great subject. I'm also interested in how you did your rib tapes?
Cheers,
Gary

Some progress on the interior...
I should have mounted the interior to the other fuselage half, now I will have to fit the hand air pump after assembly.
Added some bits and pieces to the cockpit, including a magnetic compass.
Front of the fuselage has been thinned as much as possible. Mercedes D.III engine ready for installation...
Kent

Looking great, Sir!
Everything has that 'lived in' look....
-
Engine and interior are fantastic Kent! You have convinced Me to save for another DIII!
RAGIII

Might fine indeed , excellent work Kent :) Hope the pressure pump will be easy fit

Fuselage is closed up and the painting proces has begun...

I've decided to try out some 'plywood' transparent decals, lets see how it goes...
-
You have done a superb job on getting the cowling and lower wing aligned and blended in without huge gaps! Looks fantastic!

Looking great.
More...PLEASE! ;)

Thank you Rick, it actually took quite some work to get it right!

Missed this until now. That is looking as good as a WNW kit - must be the modelling waving his wand over it. Everything is superb.
Stephen.
-
Very nice, that does look well-built and shows what can be done with a Roden kit. I'm watching with interest, as I have one waiting here as well.
Didn't this aircraft have extra vents on the nose or maybe I'm just confusing things... :o
Jeroen

So, got around to try and 'plywood' the fuselage.

Printet some homemade plywood decal texture.
Actually it was a lot more fun than I imagined ;)
Don't be to harsh on the outcome, after all it's the first attempt at it...
Cheers: Kent

I somehow missed the start of this project, glad to discover it. Lovely work all around, Kent. The wood decals look gorgeous!

I've decided to try out some 'plywood' transparent decals, lets see how it goes...
It went very well!
Could you elaborate a little on how you made the "transparent" decals, that is what patterns and what decal paper, inkjet or laser?
Thanks.
Gene K

Nicely done! I am still amazed at the fit you achieved on the cockpit/cowling covers. Looking forward to the next step!

Gene K
Hi Gene. I will try to explain the procedure I've used on the 'plywood'..
1) Transparent decal paper for inkjet.
2) Photoshopped a 'sheet' of 'plywood' in the amount of plywood needed.
3) Printed, dry. Coat of semi gloss top coat (Mr Hobby).
4) Cut the piece you want to apply to approx. size and apply as any decal.
5) When fixed (not dry) cut with a very sharp knife at the panel lines.
I have not used clear orange, only future.
I'm sure I will be using this technique a lot more.
It's a nice way to cutomize your mode and create the texture you want.
Kent
-
Sure looks like plywood. I would say your technique is successful. Are you going to tone down the grain in some way?

Nope, sorry! I like the worn non-uniform look of the plywood, this is exactly the result I was hoping for by using my own 'homebrew'.
Now I have some experience with the decalling, I will start working on the Thulin G.

Perfect, Kent. Thanks.
Any plans for "fasteners"?

I don't think I will be experimenting with nails just yet...

Retraction of former statement:
After applying Werner Voss' decals and encouraged by Gene, I went over the plywood with a Rosie the riveter tool...
To finish it, I went over the 'nails' with some diluted black paint.
Kent

This one really looks awesome. The markings look great as do the subtle nail heads.
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick!
Here is a detail of the plywood work. Maybe it has gotten a little too 'rough' but I wanted to avoid it getting too uniform.
And you have to start somewhere, right?

Looks great to Me. The Voss DIII is a bird I will surely have to do someday! Thanks for the continued inspiration.
RAGIII
-
I really like the up close shot . Shows off that beautiful grain even better . Like Rick said , nothing wrong with that at all .
Terri
-
Beautiful indeed Kent, I like the way you made the inkjet decal sheet and you placed those decals in a really perfect way...
I have this plane in my to do list but in 48th.
-
excellent effect for the plywood and for the nails
-
That turned out lookin mighty fine. To me, the grain is a little too much, but like you say, you gotta start somewhere and it's the look you wanted. I like it especially with Voss's markings on it. Very nicely done. Now, if only I had an inkjet printer.
-
I missed this!! You made a challenging model into a beauty bird!! Way braver than me nailing AFTER decaling!!
Steve
-
I always enjoy your builds, there’s always a wealth of tips to pick up.
The modelling is top notch too
-
You nailed it!
Gene K
-
The nail heads look great, Kent. I'll have to try it on a build.
-
You are definitely a renaissance man when it comes to model building. I missed the start of this and it looks amazing!!!

Getting into the final phase...

RAGIII

Wow , that was quick !
Terri
-
Looking great, Kent! :)
I too think the plywood is a bit too coarse (kind of looks like the underlayment boards for a floor) but now that it had the markings and the rest on it looks pretty neat! Also a nice idea putting the nails on later over the decals -I can't imagine myself having the patience doing line after line of nail decals. This looks quite effective!
Jeroen

Woohoo! My first Albatros!
Some of you may not agree with my 'homebrew' plywood, but now it's all brought together I'm very happy with the result!
It looks a little rough around the edges, but overall I like the appearance of the well used WW1 Albatros fighter of Werner Voss.

Kent, I am Gobsmacked by your results! A True inspiration and example of just how Great the Roden DIII can be built by a true Modeler!
RAGIII
-
Thank you Rick, well as this is my first Albatros, I wouldn't know how much better the WNW's is?
Kent
-
Lovely result Kent.
I too am making Voss' machine (although later with the offset rad) and am hugely impressed with your model - and your speed.
Can't understand the Roden detractors: this is an excellent kit.
Sandy
-
I gotta say, (write) seeing the completed model against the photo, the wood grain is really nice. An outstanding job Kent and as has been mentioned, just shows how nice a Roden Kit can turn out.
-
Man , Kent ..that turn out beautiful and your wood effect just adds even more to the build . :)
Terri
-
Yes, the wood grain is not bad at all. Makes an interesting visual feature.
Any particular areas to watch out for when building a Roden Albie D.iii? Got one in the stash that's coming up soon.
-
The Roden Albatros, fit and detailing is ok. But what do I know, this is my first Albatros?
All parts need some cleaning up, drilling holes etc.
I think you need to add some kind of rib tape, at least on the top sides. Maybe it can be done with paint only?
The major issue is the softness of the plastic, the struts bend like rubber!
As with the Wingnut Mercedes D.III you can add details, scratched or detail parts from Taurus.
Maybe you can get away with EZ-Line rigging but for monofilament rigging I replaced the struts with brass rod.
PE LMG, seatbelts...

That’s without doubt a wonderful Albatros that shows it’s sleek lines and a great wooden texture. Really nice!

That has come out really nice Kent, well done. Regards, Pete in RI

Gorgeous model! Great work with a very fine final result. I do like the plywood, even if it might be too much overscaled, but it does look like plywood - very realistic.
-
She's a beauty, Kent and no mistake.
Well done!
von B ;)

Great result and the wood looks good I think. We're back to the issue of representing something in scale that in order to look like we want it to, might have to be out of scale. If you're happy with it, then that's good I think!
It was quite interesting to learn that you made them yourself!
