Title: Scratch built Nieuport IV in 1:72 scale
Post by: smperry on September 10, 2020, 01:55:10 PM
Many years ago I started a scratch build of a 1:72 scale Nieuport IV.  I lost track of the project over the years. A couple of months ago, I found it in a plastic bag in a dusty shoe box. I didn't have a 7 cyl rotary for it so it was destined to stay in it's bag and then I learned of Small Stuff. This is an Israeli company that makes beautiful small scale engines. My kit arrived today. Beautiful casting and very well thought out engineering.

I intend to do the model as Nesterov's machine. Not much in the way of markings, a Roman numeral IV on the rudder, everything else is either CDL or sheet metal. Nesterov was reputed to have flown the first loop in this machine. This is all dimly remembered. Please correct me if memory has not served....again.

The photo below is where the project is at present. The pieces on the left are paper templates, on the right plasticard. I will be working on this slowly and will post progress as it occurs .

SP,
It's always with great interest that I follow the scratch building process. This unique aircraft will be one to watch.
                                                                                                                  Good luck with this build,
                                                                                                                                           Kevin

Thanks Kevin. It's nice to have an audience. I will have to start with the engine kit so I can get the nose/cowl area sized to fit. After that the U/C struts and the kingpost need to be made. I am thinking soldered brass rod or tube would be ideal for this design. Lots of fun conjuring up an airplane out of scraps.

Outstanding sp!  This is an interesting aircraft, and I will follow along on your journey to enjoy and see what I can learn.

Best regards,

Bob

Hi SP, this is going to be a great one to follow. Been away for a while and missed a lot of projects.

Thanks y'all. I'm committed to finishing it now. I'm not too worried about the funky U/C, it is getting the cowl right that has me going. So while I work on the engine, I will need to research more about the wings. Did they have external rib battens? I have no idea on such an early bird, so I need to go find out.

Good to see an SB in God's Own Scale, (must get back to it when the current project is finished). Those Small Stuff kits really are the dog's b.....ks - good news that you have one and are therefore able to continue with this project.

I will follow along if you do not mind...

Stephen.

Stephen, follow along by all means. Scratch building often requires an audience to whine to :-)

Have  you had any experience with Small Stuff? They mention a kind of foil glue. Do you know anything about it?

I should do OK Terri, no double wires on this one. :-) The Small stuff people call out a specific glue and the pieces are so fine I am afraid to use anything else. The pushrods are finer than a fine hair. I wrote the Small stuff people inquiring about it and am awaiting a response. This thing has waited 15 years or so. A few more days won't matter. I want to get out of that Small Stuff engine what the designer intended. Going to be a 7 ring circus getting this little engine built. I'm not looking past that at this point. Welcome aboard.

Very nice project!
I have to many started projects, otherwise I would like to join with building my 1/48 Planet Model kit of that aircraft!

Oh yes, Small Stuff engines are great! All of my models using a rotary are equipped with such a engine, if the type is available.
Mostly 1/48, but for a Fokker D.VIII strip down I have also build a 1/72 rotary:
https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=8721.0

I know it is for 1/48, but this is may be also for your smaller one a detailed recommendation:

Happy modeling,
Frank

sp,
I took a look on the link Frank sent you and they refer to MicroScale "Metal Foil Adhesive".

https://www.google.com/search?source=univ&tbm=isch&q=Microscale&client=firefox-b-d&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiKzqLtnuHr

Scroll down about half way and you'll find it.

I've never used it but this is probably what you are looking for.
Cheers,
Lance

I use the MicroScale adhesive all the time, for fixing foil onto models needing a bare metal finish.

The stuff looks like white glue but handles differently. It only become sticky when it dries, and you rub the foil down hard to make a solid bond. Drying takes about a quarter hour.

It is not a water glue, and I find that CA accelerator cleans it up quick and brisk, using a bit of paper towel of a cotton bud.

I suppose putting a bit in a locator hole and letting it dry would work well enough for the purpose here. I've never tried using it for anything but its stated purpose.

Nice project, I'll definitely follow this one. I built and corrected the eastern Express (?) kit a few years back for the Nieuport group build on here.
I always use ca for small stuff engines and have never had any issues with it.

I am like Ian, I use CA for Small Stuff engines and it works very well indeed.

I write again: they are top notch kits and well worth the money. They can be mounted as models in their own right IMHO.

Stephen.

Good to hear about using CA on the Small Stuff kits.

I want to thank everyone who showed  interest and offered support, y'all really have me enthused about this project. Unfortunately I am unable to pursue it or any other for a while. My back has totally gone out on me. I can barely sit at the computer to keep up on the Forum. Actually sitting at the bench and accomplishing anything isn't in the cards right now.

I am awaiting a fresh MRI to wave under the doctor's nose and see what he says, so until then I have to self medicate and wait. No fun at all. It may be a while, but I will be doing the Nie IV

You have my total sympathy concerning the back problem Steve. As a fellow sufferer I can imagine how you are feeling (but not for too long because it hurts too much). Totally frustrating I know - and very little you can do about it but wait.

I sincerely hope that it gets better soon and that you do not have to suffer too much. The Nieuport can wait - and so can we because it will be a gem when you do get back to it.

Stephen.

Thanks Bud and Stephen. It is a long wait to get this fixed. Too much discomfort to concentrate on a model. It is a matter of waiting until I get a surgery date. So not looking forward. Y'all keep posting your progress, it greatly helps

Hang in there SP, and I hope a solution surfaces quickly! I know your pain, in fact after "rolling" out of bed this morning I told the "Good Wife' I figured I've got less then a year of mobility left at this rate. I suppose our age (I'm including Stephen if I may) has a bit to do with it but at least we've got a great hobby to distract us from the problem at times. A good (Reference?) book and a a stiff whisky is the preferred solution here, rest up and keep us informed of developments.
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks Terri and Lance.
I had the MRI today. Now another week to wait to see the Dr,     still too uncomfortable to work on a model.

Saw the doc today. No surgery indicated :-)  Injections of steroids should stop the pain. Downside is a month's wait for the procedure. Did get a scrip to help until then. Looking forward to getting back to the bench.

Good news that they are not going to cut you open. I sincerely hope that the medication works - and that you can get back to the seriously important things in life - scratch building.
