Sopwith Triplane "Black Maria", Eduard 1/48
My fifth model of 2020 is a important piece of aviation history: the Sopwith Triplane as flown by Raymond Collishaw in the Black Flight.
It is in scale 1/48 and based on the Eduard kit. Some kit parts are replaced by wood and metal e.g. airscrew, tail skid and cockpit parts. Beside the kit PE I used PE from the company Parts, the Clerget engine from Small Stuff, the seat belts are made by HGW and the terminals for the RAF wire rigging is from Gaspatch.
The paints are from Mr.Paint, especially the nice PC12 needs to be mentioned, Alclad, Gunze and oil paints for the weathering.
Without the great support of our forum members the project would not have been possible - Thank you very much!
I really like the final look of the model ...

I will try to do some outdoor shots ...
Thanks for watching!

A fine looking beast, Frank. If there are any errors, they are not obvious, but I am not very familiar with Sopwith Tripes. Your detail work really sets your builds apart.
-
looks great. I like the very subtle streaking/weathering on the under side.
Paul
-
As usual Frank, a magnificent model! The very brownish PC.12 color looks very good, the detail is spectacular, and the overall effect most impressive, great modelling!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Beautiful Frank,
I think your best yet. It really does look like a Wingnuts kit - but better!
I love your multi media approach to modelling.
Guy
-
A very important aircraft indeed. And a fine model all around. Congratulations.
-
This is a very fine model indeed.!
-
Must say that this has to be your best yet , beautiful job Frank !
Terri

Following your build was truly a pleasure. I was more amazed with each update! This is a Masterful Build in all aspects! Brilliant work Frank!

That is one fine looking model, Frank. Absolutely brilliant - a real jewel. Great looking photos of a beautiful model.
Cheers,
Gary

That’s a beautiful looking model, certainly one to be proud of

All of your models have something to teach the rest of us Frank. Your use of different materials demonstrate a level of skill which turn me green with envy.
That is a truly magnificent model from a master modeller.
Stephen.

Thank you Ken, Paul, Lance, Guy , PrzemoL, Ian, Terri, Rick, Gary, Early Bird Fan and Stephen! Your feedback made my day!
The very brownish PC.12 color looks very good
I like the real color even more, compared to the pictures. It is more dark and less on the red side, my cam seems to modify red somehow.
I think your best yet.

Wow, again? I thought that would not be possible. Ok, I tried to take advantage of the new electronic cutting tool for masking. May be this helped.
The next one must then be able to fly? :o
Cheers,
Frank

Excellent work, Frank!
You have created a little gem of a Tripe - well done!!
vB ;)
-
Thank you Bob!
I looked lately at your interpretation in the group build and I must say I like the black tailplane too. But it was to late, it was already painted. On the other hand I could use a black C below, which is also nice.
Cheers,
Frank
-
Frank,
I have enjoyed this build from the start and the result is fantastic.
Thanks for sharing your skills,
Kevin
-
Thank you Kevin, also for your continued support in the build thread!
Fortunately I started to build these flying wire entanglements quite late, because when this kit was released, these great accessories from Small Stuff and Gaspatch were not available. But in retrospect it was hard to find the old kits - I found this triplane kit in Italy.
Cheers,
Frank

+1 :)
One thing that catches my eye somehow is that the fuselage behind the cockpit on the Eduard model seems less rounded (flatter) than in the picture of the real one. Not meant as criticism, just something that I noticed (and would be hard to correct, although for you it seems noting is impossible! 8)
Jeroen

Thank you Jeroen!
the fuselage behind the cockpit on the Eduard model seems less rounded (flatter) than in the picture of the real one.
That is a interesting question, so I cut a paper template from the section D-D (end of the cockpit cut out) of the Datafile drawing and hold it to the model - perfect match. So Eduard got it right according to the drawing. May be the drawing is wrong?
Could also be a optical effect, I can't reach the same camera position with my lens.
Cheers,
Frank
-
Could be an optical effect, too -the original has a pronounced reflection on the edge where the panel around the cockpit changes into fabric, which shows it's curve very well -perhaps too well?
It would be interesting to see how the Wingnuts model relates to a scaled-up drawing :) Or am I being obsessed now? ;D ;D
-
Very nicely done. I especially like the way you highlighted the wing ribbing, almost a translucent effect. As mentioned too the color is a real eye catcher as well, like the shade of PC-12 you have. Overall a very outstanding build.
-
You made that old Eduard kit shine. Nice work indeed.
Cheers,
Dwayne

Ditto this and all the above compliments !

Thank you Mark, Dwayne and Ed!
I used a lightning tent for the pictures but I do not like the reflection of the PC12 to the lower surfaces above. I really must try to take some outdoor shots.
Cheers,

Today I took outdoor shots before it started raining. Enjoy!

Love the plane and new photos, Frank! Very nice!

Why are you posting pictures of a real full size aeroplane here?
Sandy

I want to jump in and fly her Frank!

Thank you Jeroen, Gaz, Sandy and Guy!
Why are you posting pictures of a real full size aeroplane here?
Because this is one of my scaled down originals :D See my signature below.
I want to jump in and fly her Frank!
Guy, I can only allow that with a valid type rating :P

That looks amazing!!

Hi Frank, I've been away from the scene for a while and missed this. I loved following the build and the finished model is an absolute gem. A real masterclass in fine detailing!

I just caught up Frank,and what a treat,a beautifully executed model.Congratulations indeed,
Cheers,

I too thought for a moment that you had been to Old Warden and taken these photos...... I could easily be mistaken into believing that this is a real aeroplane. What a tribute to your modelling skills!
Stephen.

Oh, very nice, that this older thread pops up again and overtakes the newer Morane-Saulnier with Skies 8) Need to wait some month for outdoor pics for that machine.
Thank you very much Steve, Brad, Dave and Stephen!
I too thought for a moment that you had been to Old Warden and taken these photos......
Pity, I would have loved to see your face at that moment :D
