Title: Checker Time , Sopwith Camel
Post by: Alexis on July 28, 2020, 11:20:21 AM
Don't feel like working on anything WW 2 at the moment and while I plan and work on the pfalz . I need a side project , an out of box build will be perfect for this . So I grab this one out of the stash . Eduards Camel kit in 1/48 scale .

A beautiful choice of markings Terri - I hope to pick up this boxing one day, they are hard to come across nowadays unless you want to pay a premium.

Looking forward to you working your magic on this one :)

Thanks guys , hope to start cutting this weekend and getting some paint happening .

Brad if not the kit I do believe there is an after market set for this scheme . I could be wrong though it does happen from time to time .

Mac , really nice job on your build . I built the Bluemax kit but it didn't survive . Still have some of the cockpit items and guns .

Terri,
Good to see you won't let the dust settle on your tools.
I hope you are wearing proper footwear for this build.

Now that will be an interesting scheme Terri. Was that machine used in a training establishment or was it front line as RFC machines at the front tended to be rather dull?

Thanks for dropping by Stephen , always nice having you follow along on my adventures  :) I know nothing about the pilot or unit but Eduard says No.28th Squadron Canadian Ace Lt Clifford Mackay " Black Mike " McEven MC , DFC . Dec , 30 , 1917

I have start with a bit of progress with the fire wall and engine . I will be replacing the push rods . While trying to remove the the plastic broke and I'm not much of a fan of PE rods either .

Excellent start Terri, you are an unstoppable machine aren't you, producing first class models at a dizzying rate. I am left gasping and very envious.

By the way, the colour scheme was added post war. 28 Sqdn in Italy in 1919 painted their Camels in a variety of dazzling ways. There are some enticing pictures in the "bible" - the Air Britain Camel File.

Engine looks good so far Terri. What will you use for the push rods? Thin wire? I agree that plastic ones always look too thick unless they are of stretched sprue.

Stephen , I will be using plastic rod 0.03mm for the pushrod replacement . I don't have stiff enough wire for the job and I really don't want to go the HS just yet .

Very nice subject. Looking forward to watching your adventure. I do not like brass tubing and I have started using .3mm plastic rod from Plastruct, 90850 MR-10. They are very easy to use and a package is less than $5.00 USD and each piece is about 12" long and there are 10 pieces to a package.
Title: Re: Checker Time , Sopwith Camel
Post by: Alexis on August 08, 2020, 10:19:52 AM
That's what I use . I have .3mm - .5mm for doing push rods and very cheap for me at the local HS . 3 bucks per package . Then again the last time I purchased some ...well , really can't recall , but it has been a long time so the price could be more now . Still though 5 bucks isn't bad at all Fred

The thumbnail photo of the 2 fuse halves on the wing looked like a twin boom Camel at first glance. I gotta quit putting off a trip to the eye doctor for new lenses

Thanks for a good shot of your wood base coat. I believe I see now why my wood painting is not exactly what I want. I am using too dark a base color.

The painting looks fine - I too have had to learn to use base coats: my artistic skills are in the minus range....  The push rods are ahuge improvement on the kit parts - they are just so damn fiddly to fit!

Stephen.
Title: Re: Checker Time , Sopwith Camel
Post by: Alexis on August 12, 2020, 10:42:48 AM
Thanks guys for still tagging along on such a small update  ;)

Stephen , it might seem fiddly doing the push rods but I drill holes deep enough that it gives me a bit of wiggle room and saves on having to keep trimming for that perfect fit .

SP , if you are starting with a dark base coat , spray a lighter shade in the center of the panels then do your grain effect and clear coating . I do my base coat to the effect I'm looking for so sometimes it is a light shade or a dark shade or a mixture of both . For filters I thin future with tamiya paint 90/10 or tamiya paint with water and just a tad of dish soap so the water doesn't bead on the surface . I do like your wood though it is calming  :)

Now I hadn't thought of a two tone base for wood. I can see where that might have some applications. Thanks for the tip.
I have to ask. What is meant by "Filters" ? That was not a term bandied about back in the day and it is totally new to me. A tinted clear sort of thing?

Hi sp , sorry for not getting back too you sooner . Read your post this morning but was in no mood this morning for typing . All is good now though and feeling much happier !

Yes , filters work wonders and help bring the whole effect together . For my base coat on my Lloyd build it has a two tone on the wings and fuselage . Same as the HB D.1 .

It is basically clear coating with a tint . You can make this tint as light or dark with any colour you want . ( also works most excellent for doing washes )  ;) When I do a filter a light brown is use for darker tones and a tanish for lighter tones . Before I do my finally clear coating panel lines and edges , around hatches I spray with thinned tamiya smoke slowly building this up , it doesn't take much to over do it . Filters you can build up different effects with in the tones going over a area with a few more passes then others .

Terri

Title: Re: Checker Time , Sopwith Camel
Post by: smperry on August 13, 2020, 04:12:50 PM
Thanks Terri. My go to clear is Future, so any filters I make up will be versions of tinted Future. Watercolors or watercolor pencil scrapings for lighter tint and acrylic paint for a more robust tint. Right now the only tinted Future I have is yellow acrylic that I use on props. I will make up light browns and redish browns as I do more wood. I had never heard the idea called filters. I will have to get some of that Flory wash. watched hos video and was most impressed. Works right in with clear coating and filters.

Just to add to the tinted future idea, it’s something I use often but make a little up each time.

For a quick wood effect, I’ll spray a light tan base coat, then instead of using oils I “shade” with a variety of coloured pencils lightly dragged over the surface.  Then I’ll add a drop of brown acrylic paint into a half teaspoon full of future/klear and brush on, in several coats.  I do the same but with a drop of white or yellow paint to apply to clear plastic parts for fuel gauges, light fittings etc.

Sorry Terri, don’t want to distract from your build.. !  Just echoing your filtering   :)

Looking forward to more progress pics..

Good idea for diorama too.

Thanks Roberto ,  yes I have the photo as well but thank you for posting . Eduard did get the " R " wrong for the decal but I'm going to leave it as is .

Engine was sprayed with Vallejo Metal Coat and a wash of black to highly the details and blacking the cylinders . Inductions pipes got the copper treatment and that is todays work on this one .

Thanks for the kind comment guys  :)

Not much to report on progress but the fuel tank was eating at me so I sanded off the straps , filled the seems and primed it with Tamiya flat alum . At the same time I brush paint some Tamiya tape brown shade to replace the leather straps once it has been repainted . Will also use better buckles then what the kit offers . So much for out of the box  ::)

Stephen , I just wanted to have a easy build without having to over think the details . I like building out of the box every now and then . For me doing the super detailing and such bogs me down sometimes . Once I get more of the pfalz completed will turn a bit more attention to this one .

Thanks Jeroen  :)

Work has continued one this with a wash being applied and sealed with a matt coat minus the instrument panel and the metal panels .

The lower wing didn't fit and some curving and trimming was needed to get it in place . I also had to remove the vent side panels on the inner firewall , this press up on the rudder bar with is another fit issue altogether . The carb pipe isn't long to span across the fuselage into it's mounting holes , same with the spent shell shouts , but I can make this work . It is easier to mount the fire wall to the upper decking , lines up better with no gaps . All other parts are removed and ready for clean up .

Yes , it would be nice at this point to have a trouble free build , but these fit issues are very minor and have been fix . I added small bits of round stock to the end of the card intakes to fill the gap . Once those a dried this stage can get glued up and start with the seams .

Instrument panel is now in place . Extending the carb tube did the trick and lines up ! Hey!!!

I'm a little disappointed on the Vickers breaches , the are very very simple even with the PE cocking handles they are still very , very basic .

Looking good Terri. I wonder if some these short comings are the reason Eduard are or were planning to produce a new mold  Sopwith Camel? Anyway, it’s coming along great.

It all depends Kevin ,

I'll use either a light grey or a neutral grey sometimes even white using Tamiya paints cut with lacquer thinner . Nothing fancy really . I try to keep things simple , I cause myself a enough frustration during a build .

Turned out be more PE then what I thought and with a nap this afternoon I didn't make it to primer , but everything is ready for tomorrow .

I had the flight controls on the main wings in the wrong place and got them changed around as they should be . The inspection windows are very plain ( no pulley detail ) , They are a prefect fit so that made my life easier !

Should have rest of the decals on today and get them sealed for a bit of weathering . Don't want to much weathering on this one , it would take away for the scheme .

Title: Re: Checker Time , Sopwith Camel

Rest of the decals are on , a few still need another coat of super sol . Mainly on the fin and rudder assembly . The decals are on think side but other then that they did perform well over the details . The checkers on the cowl give me a few issues and off by just a bit , but I'm happy with the results so far , she does look sharp ! All the other bits are pretty much ready to go . Tail skid is in the middle of getting it's colours , the prop just needs the boss painted . Now it's off to seal the decals and start making a shit load of eyelets . I must admit ...I really like this scheme  :)

Stephen , that is the only reason way I pick up this kit was just for the scheme . I also have the checker Brisfit in the stash as well to go with this one . Just something about checkers . I would love to this scheme in 32 scale but I haven't seen decals for it .

Round two of the weathering is finished with the underside waiting for additional weathering with chalks . Then one last sealing coat and its off the assembly and rigging .

Thanks guys ,

Now that I had some time to calm down bit putting myself in a  better frame of mind . I spent some time cleaning up the parts for re-assembly , but that will come in a few days . I need new pin stock and super glue . I was using locite and it must be old for it is very brittle once cured . I will take a break from this one for a few days and focus on my other builds .

Still though , if I hand a pair of giant green hands I would have smashed it and called it more then just a meer puniy plane !

The ficken struts are in place and this was an all day affair with no love involved what so ever . At one time through out the day it did end up in the trash bin . There is gluing errors and not just small ones here and there . They are pretty good and you what ...I'm not going to do anything about them , just don't care . I have had my fill on being frustrated on such a simple strut configuration . On the plus side the wing is center and straight and can start the rigging soon .

I'm glad you saved this one, Terri!  I just finished an old Revell B-24 in anti-U-boot colors and some of the decals almost made me chuck the whole thing.  A day of rest, repositioning....and lots of sanding and re-spraying...and I got it over the hump and now I'm glad it's on the shelf!

Terri I can empathise with you. I managed to knock my DH 1A build when I was rigging the wings and the whole structure collapsed.... I could easily have given up at that point but am glad that I did not.

I am very pleased that you have not given up either. One day you will look at this very colourful Camel and feel pleased that you did not give up too. Eventually..!

So pleased that you are close to finish this one Terri. It is truly a colourful aeroplane - and every time you see it in the cabinet (it will truly standout!), you will be reminded of your struggle. But you will have won!

Thank you gentlemen  :)

Break out a bottle of champagne , main rigging is flipping done !!! It's not my best rigging efforts , but it will do . Not sure if I will do the landing gear or tail feathers next . We will see on the next up-date .

rigging looks great, what's your technique for getting the double lines nice and parallel?

I think its one of the best Camel liveries there is.  Can't see any 'defects' in the pictures.  I like it!  :D

Thank you everyone for the positive comments , it is great moto to press forward even though I still want to shame the thing with giant green hands !

Today's progress was getting the land gear struts and tail skid in place . I had one hell of a time with the rigging for this and the lower chin and made a bit of a mess and a PE part when flying off into the great blue yawn'der never to be seen again or until i brush my hair ...have found them there before from time to time  ::) Finishing line is closing in with the tail unit and rudder being left and flight controls .

EBF ,

I must admit that I cheated with the double flying wires this time around . I only use one eyelet . At one of the points I pass the line through the eyelet matching both ends . I then slip on two small selves (1mm) on each line . pull this tight and add small drop of super glue right on the eyelet . This locks the line in place . One the other end I pull the line through on the right side of the eyelet and the other on the left . Pull tight and add a drop of super glue to the eyelet . I then slide each selve in place and fix with a drop of glue , trim line once glue has set .

Spent the day finishing the tail/rudder , rigging and flight controls . Now I need to go back and paint the turnbuckles and have a few touch ups here and there . Few more PE parts to add such as the gun sights and tie down rings on the lower wing and the pilot tube with the prop being the very last item .

The finish line is very close now Terri - and you will have a very good model when you cross it. It will certainly be one to remember.
