Title: Avro 504k details
Post by: RichieW on July 16, 2020, 06:22:39 AM
Sadly the 504 was not in a great position fro photographs but there are plenty photographs of the whole aircraft online. Luckily I got chatting with one of the mechanics who let me crawl under the nose and get some detail shots. Hope these are of use, if you would like to download the full size images as reference photos please go ahead.

This is an original airworthy 504 and was used in the film Reach For The Sky.

Hope the pictures are useful.

Thank you Richie for that walk around too!
The amount of rigging and control wires is impressive :o That moved the kit some positions downwards in the stash ::)

Cheers,
Frank

Haha, as I was taking the pictures I was thinking 'Now this will be a proper challenge for Frank!'

There are fewer cables on a plate of spaghetti covered in cobwebs. ;)

I sure was surprised how many runs I missed when I built the Blue Max kit, pity WNW never turned their attention to it.
Cheers,
Dave.

Thank you Richie! I always had and still have a soft spot for the 504K. Unfortunately we won't ever see a decent kit of it in 1/32th scale...😢

Thanks for the detail shots, Richie.  No doubt they will help me figure out how this thing is rigged.

One question, if you can remember - on the bottom where the doubled cables for the ailerons come off the pulley, there is a third cable stretched across there (12th picture, and maybe the 8th picture, also).  What is the third cable for?  Where does each end terminate?

I really appreciate the pictures.   :)

I can't remember where they terminated Ken and was under a bit of pressure at the time as they weren't supposed to let me crawl under the aircraft to get some shots. I have a few more shots that might help solve the riddle. There is another 504 in London's Science Museum that is hanging from the ceiling. I may be able to visit there soon to get more shots. I also have a month pass to the Shuttleworth Collection so will visit next week.

In the meantime if you click on any of the pictures it will take you to my Flickr site, I have organised the photos into albums and there are additional pictures that may be of use to you.

Had another look through the pictures, there are a few I meant to post but seem to have posted the same shots multiple times. This may help,

The front wire seems to be a bracing wire that passes in front of the pulley and attaches to fuselage.

Just a guess on that third cable. Perhaps it is attached to the other two aileron cables at their attachment points just outside of the edges of the fuselage as a kind of "balance" cable between the two sides. So when you move the stick in one direction, this cable reduces some of the effort needed by the pilot by pulling against the opposite side. Notice how the cable passes thru a guide tube as the others do also.

I was just looking at a close-up photo of the TVAL AVRO 504's landing gear area taken by another member some time ago (won't use it without permission). The third cable is definitely attached between the two outside cable junction points.
